1 The Philistines gave battle to Israel and the Israelites, fleeing from the Philistines, fel and wereslaughtered on Mount Gilboa.	1 I Filistei combatterono contro Israele; gl'Israeliti si diedero alla fuga davanti ai Filistei, ma caddero, feriti a morte, sul monte Gelboe.
2 The Philistines bore down on Saul and his sons, and they kil ed Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua,Saul's sons.	2 I Filistei, inseguendo dappresso Saul e i suoi figli, uccisero Gionata, Abinadad e Malchisua, figli di Saul.
3 The fighting grew fiercer round Saul; the archers came upon him, and he was wounded by thearchers.	3 Poi il peso della battaglia si riversò su Saul; gli arcieri lo scoprirono ed egli ebbe paura di fronte ad essi.
4 Saul then said to his armour-bearer, 'Draw your sword and run me through with it. I do not want theseuncircumcised men to come and make fun of me.' But his armour-bearer was very much afraid and would not doit. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.	4 Allora Saul disse al suo scudiero: "Sfodera la tua spada e trafiggimi, altrimenti verranno quegli incirconcisi e si prenderanno beffe di me". Ma lo scudiero non volle, perché aveva gran timore. Allora Saul, presa la spada, si gettò su di essa.
5 His armour-bearer, seeing that Saul was dead, fel on his sword too and died with him.	5 Quando lo scudiero vide che Saul era morto, si gettò anch'egli sulla spada e morì.
6 Thus died Saul, his three sons and his entire household together.	6 Così perì Saul con i tre figli; tutta la sua famiglia morì con lui.
7 When al the Israelites who were in the val ey saw that the Israelites had been routed and that Sauland his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. The Philistines then came and occupied them.	7 Quando tutti gl'Israeliti della valle si accorsero che i loro erano fuggiti e che Saul e i suoi figli erano periti, abbandonarono le loro città dandosi alla fuga. Vennero i Filistei e vi presero dimora.
8 When the Philistines came on the fol owing day to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons lyingon Mount Gilboa.	8 Il giorno dopo i Filistei, venuti per spogliare gli uccisi, trovarono Saul e i suoi figli che giacevano morti sul monte Gelboe.
9 They stripped him and, taking his head and his armour, had these carried round the territory of thePhilistines to proclaim the good news to their idols and their people.	9 Lo spogliarono portandogli via la testa e le armi, quindi inviarono messaggeri per tutta la regione filistea ad annunciare la buona notizia ai loro idoli e al popolo.
10 They placed his armour in the temple of their gods and nailed his head up in the temple of Dagon.	10 Depositarono le sue armi nel tempio del loro dio, mentre inchiodarono il suo cranio nel tempio di Dagon.
11 When al the inhabitants of Jabesh in Gilead heard everything that the Philistines had done to Saul,	11 Quando gli abitanti di Iabes ebbero appreso tutto ciò che i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul,
12 the warriors al set out and took the bodies of Saul and his sons away; they brought them to Jabeshand buried their bones under the tamarisk of Jabesh and fasted for seven days.	12 si levarono tutti i guerrieri, prelevarono il cadavere di Saul e i cadaveri dei suoi figli e li trasportarono a Iabes; indi seppellirono le loro ossa sotto il terebinto di Iabel e digiunarono per sette giorni.
13 Thus died Saul in the infidelity of which he had been guilty towards Yahweh, in that he had notobeyed the word of Yahweh and because he had consulted a necromancer for guidance.	13 Saul morì a causa della sua infedeltà commessa contro il Signore, giacché non aveva osservato la parola del Signore e perché aveva consultato una negromante per interrogarla.
14 He had not consulted Yahweh, who therefore caused his death and transferred the monarchy toDavid son of Jesse.	14 Non aveva consultato il Signore, che lo fece morire e trasferì il regno a Davide, figlio di Iesse.
