1 The Philistines gave battle to Israel and the Israelites, fleeing from the Philistines, fel and wereslaughtered on Mount Gilboa.	1 - I Filistei combattevano contro Israele, e i figliuoli d'Israele fuggirono davanti ai Filistei e caddero morti sulla montagna di Gelboe.
2 The Philistines bore down on Saul and his sons, and they kil ed Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua,Saul's sons.	2 I Filistei essendosi avanzati, inseguendo Saul e i suoi figli, colpirono Jonatan, Abinadab e Melchisua, figli di Saul.
3 The fighting grew fiercer round Saul; the archers came upon him, and he was wounded by thearchers.	3 Allora la battaglia divenne più accanita contro Saul. Gli arcieri lo trovarono e lo ferirono coi loro dardi.
4 Saul then said to his armour-bearer, 'Draw your sword and run me through with it. I do not want theseuncircumcised men to come and make fun of me.' But his armour-bearer was very much afraid and would not doit. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.	4 Saul disse al suo scudiero: «Sfodera la tua spada e uccidimi, affinchè non vengano questi incirconcisi e si facciano ludibrio di me». Ma il suo scudiero, pieno di spavento, non volle far ciò, e Saul presa la sua spada, vi si gettò sopra.
5 His armour-bearer, seeing that Saul was dead, fel on his sword too and died with him.	5 Vedendo ciò il suo scudiero, cioè che Saul era morto anch'egli si gettò sulla sua spada e morì.
6 Thus died Saul, his three sons and his entire household together.	6 Morì dunque Saul e i suoi tre figli e tutta la casa di lui perì nello stesso tempo.
7 When al the Israelites who were in the val ey saw that the Israelites had been routed and that Sauland his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. The Philistines then came and occupied them.	7 Avendo ciò visto gli Israeliti, che abitavano nella pianura, se ne fuggirono ed essendo morti Saul e i figli suoi, abbandonarono le loro città e si dispersero qua e là. Allora i Filistei vennero e abitarono in esse.
8 When the Philistines came on the fol owing day to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons lyingon Mount Gilboa.	8 L'indomani i Filistei raccogliendo le spoglie degli uccisi, trovarono Saul e i suoi figli giacenti sul monte di Gelboe.
9 They stripped him and, taking his head and his armour, had these carried round the territory of thePhilistines to proclaim the good news to their idols and their people.	9 Avendolo spogliato e decapitato e toltegli tutte le armi, le mandarono nel loro paese per portarle in giro e mostrarle nei templi dei loro idoli e alle popolazioni.
10 They placed his armour in the temple of their gods and nailed his head up in the temple of Dagon.	10 Le armi di lui poi le consacrarono nel tempio del loro dio e il capo l'affissero nel tempio di Dagon.
11 When al the inhabitants of Jabesh in Gilead heard everything that the Philistines had done to Saul,	11 Quando ebbero saputo ciò, tutto quello cioè che i Filistei avevano fatto contro Saul, gli uomini di Jabes di Galaad,
12 the warriors al set out and took the bodies of Saul and his sons away; they brought them to Jabeshand buried their bones under the tamarisk of Jabesh and fasted for seven days.	12 quelli tra i più coraggiosi si levarono e tolsero i cadaveri di Saul e dei suoi figli e li portarono in Jabes e seppellirono le loro ossa sotto una quercia, che era in Jabes, e digiunarono per sette giorni.
13 Thus died Saul in the infidelity of which he had been guilty towards Yahweh, in that he had notobeyed the word of Yahweh and because he had consulted a necromancer for guidance.	13 Saul dunque morì per le sue iniquità, perchè ebbe a trasgredire il comando imposto dal Signore e non lo osservò. Di più, perchè andò a consultare la pitonessa.
14 He had not consulted Yahweh, who therefore caused his death and transferred the monarchy toDavid son of Jesse.	14 Egli non ebbe fiducia nel Signore: perciò il Signore lo fece morire e ne trasferì il regno a Davide, figlio di Isai.
