1 The brotherhood of prophets said to Elisha, 'Look, the place where we are living with you is too smal forus.	1 I figli dei profeti dissero a Eliseo: « Come vedi, il luogo che abitiamo davanti a te è ristretto per noi;
2 Let us go to the Jordan, then, and each of us cut a beam there, and we will make our living quartersthere.' He replied, 'Go.'	2 andiamo fino al Giordano, a prendere ciascuno la sua porzione di legname dal bosco, per fabbricar là un'abitazione ». Egli disse: « Andate ».
3 'Be good enough to go with your servants,' one of them said. 'I wil go,' he replied,	3 Ma uno di essi disse: « Vieni anche tu coi tuoi servi ». Egli rispose: « Verrò ».
4 and went with them. On reaching the Jordan they began cutting down timber.	4 E andò con loro. Giunti che furono al Giordano, si misero a tagliare il legname.
5 But, as one of them was felling his beam, the iron axehead fel into the water. 'Alas, my lord,' heexclaimed, 'and it was a borrowed one too!'	5 Or mentre uno abbatteva una pianta, il ferro dell'accetta cadde nell'acqua, figli gridò e disse: « Ahi, ahi, ahi, signor mio: è proprio quello che avevo ricevuto in prestito! »
6 'Where did it fal ?' the man of God asked; and he showed him the spot. Then, cutting a stick, Elisha threw it in at that point and made the iron axehead float.	6 L'uomo di Dio disse: « Dov'è caduto? » Egli gli mostrò il luogo. Allora Eliseo tagliò un pezzo di legno e ve lo gettò. Il ferro venne a galla.
7 'Lift it out,' he said; and the man stretched out his hand and took it.	7 Eliseo disse: « Prendilo ». L'altro stese la mano e lo prese.
8 The king of Aram was at war with Israel. He conferred with his officers and said, 'You must attack atsuch and such a place.'	8 Il re di Siria, essendo in guerra contro Israele, tenne consiglio coi suoi servi e disse: « Mettiamo un'imboscata nel tale e nel tal luogo ».
9 Elisha, however, sent word to the king of Israel, 'Be on your guard about such and such a place,because the Aramaeans are going to attack it.'	9 Ma l'uomo di Dio andò a dire al re d'Israele: « Guardati dal passare nel tal luogo, perchè vi sono i Siri in agguato ».
10 The king of Israel accordingly sent men to the place which Elisha had named. And he kept warning theking, and the king stayed on the alert; and this happened more than once or twice.	10 Il re d'Israele mandò al luogo indicato dall'uomo di Dio, l'occupò per il primo e vi si premunì molte volte.
11 The king of Aram grew very much disturbed over this. He summoned his officers, and said, 'Tel mewhich of you is betraying us to the king of Israel.'	11 Il re di Siria, turbato profondamente da queste cose, radunò i suoi servi e disse: « Perchè non mi fate sapere chi sia che mi tradisce presso il re d'Israele? »
12 'No one, my lord king,' one of his officers replied. 'It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel. The words you utterin your bedchamber, he reveals to the king of Israel.'	12 Uno dei servi disse: « Nessuno, o re mio signore; ma è il profeta Eliseo, che è in Israele, quello che fa saper al re d'Israele tutte le parole che tu dici nella tua camera ».
13 'Go and find out where he is,' the king said, 'so that I can send people to capture him.' Word wasbrought to him, 'He is now in Dothan.'	13 Il re disse loro: « Andate a veder dove sia, ch'io mandi a pigliarlo ». Gli fu riferito: « E' in Dotan ».
14 So he sent horses and chariots there, and a large force; and these, arriving during the night,surrounded the town.	14 Allora egli vi mandò cavalli e carri e un forte nerbo di esercito, che, arrivato di notte, circondò la città.
15 Next day, Elisha got up early and went out; and there surrounding the town was an armed force withhorses and chariots. 'Oh, my lord,' his servant said, 'what are we to do?'	15 Il servo dell'uomo di Dio, alzatosi di buon mattino e uscito fuori, appena vide un esercito attorno alla città con cavalli e carri, ne portò la notizia ad Eliseo, gridando: « Ahi, ahi, ahi! signor mio, che faremo noi? »
16 'Do not be afraid,' he replied, 'for there are more on our side than on theirs.'	16 Ma Eliseo rispose: « Non temere, perchè v'è più gente con noi che con loro ».
17 And Elisha prayed. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'open his eyes and make him see.' Yahweh opened theservant's eyes, and he saw the mountain covered in fiery horses and chariots surrounding Elisha.	17 Fatta orazione, Eliseo disse: « Signore, apri i suoi occhi, affinchè egli vegga ». Il Signore aprì gli occhi del servo, ed egli vide, ed ecco il monte era pieno di cavalli e di carri di fuoco intorno a Eliseo.
18 As the Aramaeans came down towards him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, 'I beg you to strike these peoplesun-blind.' And, at Elisha's word, he struck them sun-blind.	18 Intanto, i nemici scendevano verso di lui; ed Eliseo pregò il Signore, dicendo: « Signore, rendi cieca questa gente ». Il Signore li rese ciechi secondo la parola d'Eliseo.
19 Then Elisha said to them, 'This is not the road, nor is this the town. Follow me; I shal lead you to theman you are looking for.' But he led them to Samaria.	19 Eliseo poi disse loro: «Non è questa la strada, non è questa la città: venite dietro a me e vi mostrerò l'uomo che cercate ». E così li menò in Samaria.
20 As they entered Samaria, Elisha said, 'Yahweh, open these people's eyes, and let them see.' Yahwehopened their eyes and they saw; they were inside Samaria.	20 Entrati che furono in Samaria, Eliseo disse: « Signore, apri i loro occhi, affinchè veggano ». Il Signore, aperse i loro occhi e s'accorsero d'essere in mezzo di Samaria.
21 When the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, 'Shal I kil them, father?'	21 Il re d'Israele, avendoli veduti, disse ad Eliseo: « Padre mio, li devo colpire? »
22 'Do not kil them,' he replied. 'Do you kil your own prisoners with sword and bow? Offer them food andwater, so that they can eat and drink, and then let them go back to their master.'	22 Ma Eliseo rispose: « Tu non li devi colpire; perchè non li hai presi colla tua spada, nè col tuo arco, da poterli colpire; anzi metti loro davanti del pane e dell'acqua, affinchè mangino e bevano e poi tornino dal loro padrone ».
23 So the king provided a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them off andthey went back to their master. Aramaean raiding parties never invaded the territory of Israel again.	23 Furon loro portati in grande abbondanza dei cibi; essi mangiarono e bevvero e licenziati che furono se ne andarono dal loro signore, e i predoni di Siria non tornarono più nella terra d'Israele.
24 It happened after this that Ben-Hadad king of Aram, mustering his whole army, marched on and laidsiege to Samaria.	24 Dopo queste cose, Benadad re di Siria, radunato tutto il suo esercito, salì ad assediare Samaria.
25 In Samaria there was great famine, and so strict was the siege that the head of a donkey sold foreighty shekels of silver, and one quarter-kab of wild onions for five shekels of silver.	25 Vi fu una gran fame in Samaria, la qual città ebbe un assedio così lungo che la testa d'un asino costava ottanta sicli d'argento, e un quarto d'un cabo di sterco di colombi cinque sicli d'argento.
26 Now as the king was passing along the city wal , a woman shouted, 'Help, my lord king!'	26 Mentre il re passava sulle mura una donna gli gridò, dicendo: « Salvami, o re mio signore ».
27 'If Yahweh does not help you,' he retorted, 'where can I find help for you? From the threshing-floor?From the winepress?'	27 Egli disse: «Non ti salva il Signore, e come potrei salvarti io? Forse coi prodotti dell'aia e dello strettoio? » Poi il re disse: « Che vuoi tu? » Ed essa rispose:
28 Then the king asked, 'What is the matter?' 'This woman here', she answered, 'said to me, "Give upyour son; we will eat him today, and eat my son tomorrow."	28 « Questa donna mi disse: Dà oggi il tuo figliolo, chè si mangi oggi, e domani mangeremo il mio figlio.
29 So we cooked my son and ate him. Next day, I said to her, "Give up your son for us to eat." But shehas hidden her son.'	29 Abbiamo dunque cotto il mio figliolo e lo abbiamo mangiato. Il giorno dopo le dissi: Dà il tuo figlio chè si mangi; ma essa ha nascosto il suo figliolo ».
30 On hearing the woman's words, the king tore his clothes; the king was walking on the wal , and thepeople saw that underneath he was wearing sackcloth next his body.	30 Il re, appena udite queste cose, stracciò le sue vesti nel camminare lungo le mura. Tutto il popolo vide il cilicio di cui era vestito interiormente sopra la carne.
31 'May God bring unnameable ills on me, and worse il s, too,' he said, 'if the head of Elisha son ofShaphat remains on his shoulders today!'	31 Ma il re disse: « Dio mi faccia questo e peggio, se la testa d'Eliseo figlio di Safar resta oggi sopra di lui ».
32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger aheadbut, before the man arrived, Elisha had said to the elders, 'Do you see how this son of a murderer has givenorders to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door; hold the door against him. Isn't thatthe sound of his master's step behind him?'	32 Or Eliseo sedeva in casa sua cogli anziani, quando il re mandò avanti un uomo. Ma prima che questo messo arrivasse, disse agli anziani: « Non sapete voi che questo figlio dell'omicida ha mandato a farmi tagliar la testa? Guardate adunque, quando verrà il messo, di chiudere la porta, di non lasciarlo entrare, perchè ecco sento il rumore dei passi del suo signore dietro a lui ».
33 He was stil actually speaking, when the king arrived and said, 'This misery plainly comes fromYahweh. Why should I stil trust in Yahweh?'	33 Egli parlava ancora quando comparve il messo che veniva a lui e disse: « Ecco, un sì gran male viene dal Signore; che dovrei aspettare di più dal Signore? »
