NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The brotherhood of prophets said to Elisha, 'Look, the place where we are living with you is too smal forus.	1 La comunidad de profetas dijo a Eliseo: «La sala donde nos reunimos a escucharte es demasiado estrecha para nosotros.
2 Let us go to the Jordan, then, and each of us cut a beam there, and we will make our living quartersthere.' He replied, 'Go.'	2 Vayamos hasta el Jordán; allí tomaremos cada uno un poste y haremos una sala donde podremos sentarnos». El respondió: «Vayan».
3 'Be good enough to go with your servants,' one of them said. 'I wil go,' he replied,	3 Pero uno de ellos dijo: «Por favor, accede a venir con tus servidores». «Iré», respondió él,
4 and went with them. On reaching the Jordan they began cutting down timber.	4 y se fue con ellos. Cuando llegaron al Jordán, se pusieron a cortar los árboles.
5 But, as one of them was felling his beam, the iron axehead fel into the water. 'Alas, my lord,' heexclaimed, 'and it was a borrowed one too!'	5 Pero a uno de ellos, al derribar un poste, se le cayó el hacha al agua. Entonces lanzó un grito, diciendo: «¡Ay, mi señor, el hacha era prestada!».
6 'Where did it fal ?' the man of God asked; and he showed him the spot. Then, cutting a stick, Elisha threw it in at that point and made the iron axehead float.	6 El hombre de Dios dijo: «¿Dónde cayó?». El le mostró el lugar, y Eliseo partió un pedazo de madera; lo arrojó allí, y el hacha salió a flote.
7 'Lift it out,' he said; and the man stretched out his hand and took it.	7 Luego dijo: «Levántala». El discípulo extendió la mano y la recogió.
8 The king of Aram was at war with Israel. He conferred with his officers and said, 'You must attack atsuch and such a place.'	8 El rey de Aram estaba en guerra con Israel. Cuando él se reunía en consejo con sus oficiales y decía: «Acamparé en tal o cual lugar»,
9 Elisha, however, sent word to the king of Israel, 'Be on your guard about such and such a place,because the Aramaeans are going to attack it.'	9 el hombre de Dios mandaba decir al rey de Israel: «Cuidado con pasar por tal lugar, porque allí han bajado los arameos».
10 The king of Israel accordingly sent men to the place which Elisha had named. And he kept warning theking, and the king stayed on the alert; and this happened more than once or twice.	10 Entonces el rey de Israel enviaba algunos hombres al lugar que le había dicho el hombre de Dios. Eliseo le avisaba, y él tomaba las precauciones debidas. Esto sucedió más de una vez.
11 The king of Aram grew very much disturbed over this. He summoned his officers, and said, 'Tel mewhich of you is betraying us to the king of Israel.'	11 El rey de Aram se alarmó ante este hecho. Llamó a sus oficiales y les dijo: «Es preciso que me informen quién de entre nosotros está a favor del rey de Israel».
12 'No one, my lord king,' one of his officers replied. 'It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel. The words you utterin your bedchamber, he reveals to the king of Israel.'	12 Pero uno de los oficiales le respondió: «No, majestad; Eliseo, el profeta de Israel, es el que comunica al rey de Israel las palabras que tú pronuncias aun en tu dormitorio».
13 'Go and find out where he is,' the king said, 'so that I can send people to capture him.' Word wasbrought to him, 'He is now in Dothan.'	13 El rey dijo: «Vayan y vean dónde está, y yo mandaré a detenerlo». Le informaron que estaba en Dotán,
14 So he sent horses and chariots there, and a large force; and these, arriving during the night,surrounded the town.	14 y él envió caballos, carros de guerra y un fuerte destacamento, que llegaron durante la noche y cercaron la ciudad.
15 Next day, Elisha got up early and went out; and there surrounding the town was an armed force withhorses and chariots. 'Oh, my lord,' his servant said, 'what are we to do?'	15 A la mañana siguiente, el servidor del hombre de Dios se levantó de madrugada y salió. Y al ver que las tropas rodeaban la ciudad con caballos y carros de guerra, dijo a Eliseo: «Ay, señor, ¿cómo vamos a hacer?».
16 'Do not be afraid,' he replied, 'for there are more on our side than on theirs.'	16 «No temas, respondió él, porque los que están con nosotros son más que los que están con ellos».
17 And Elisha prayed. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'open his eyes and make him see.' Yahweh opened theservant's eyes, and he saw the mountain covered in fiery horses and chariots surrounding Elisha.	17 Luego Eliseo oró diciendo: «Señor, ábrele los ojos para que vea». El Señor abrió los ojos del servidor, y él vio que la montaña estaba repleta de caballos y carros de guerra alrededor de Eliseo.
18 As the Aramaeans came down towards him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, 'I beg you to strike these peoplesun-blind.' And, at Elisha's word, he struck them sun-blind.	18 Cuando los arameos descendían hacia él, Eliseo oró al Señor, diciendo: «¡Por favor, enceguece a esta gente!». Y él los encegueció, conforme a la palabra de Eliseo.
19 Then Elisha said to them, 'This is not the road, nor is this the town. Follow me; I shal lead you to theman you are looking for.' But he led them to Samaria.	19 Entonces Eliseo les dijo: «No es este el camino ni es esta la ciudad. Síganme y yo los llevaré hacia donde está el hombre que ustedes buscan». Y los llevó a Samaría.
20 As they entered Samaria, Elisha said, 'Yahweh, open these people's eyes, and let them see.' Yahwehopened their eyes and they saw; they were inside Samaria.	20 Una vez que entraron en la ciudad, Eliseo dijo: «Señor, abre los ojos de esta gente para que vean». El Señor les abrió los ojos, y vieron que estaban dentro de Samaría.
21 When the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, 'Shal I kil them, father?'	21 El rey de Israel, al verlos, dijo a Eliseo: «¿Tengo que matarlos, padre mío?».
22 'Do not kil them,' he replied. 'Do you kil your own prisoners with sword and bow? Offer them food andwater, so that they can eat and drink, and then let them go back to their master.'	22 El replicó: «No los mates. ¿Acaso haces morir a todos los que tu espada y tu arco han tomado prisioneros? Sírveles pan y agua; que coman y beban y después se vayan con su señor.
23 So the king provided a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them off andthey went back to their master. Aramaean raiding parties never invaded the territory of Israel again.	23 El rey les hizo servir un gran banquete; ellos comieron y bebieron, y después los despidió para que se fueran con su señor. Las bandas arameas no volvieron a incursionar en territorio de Israel
24 It happened after this that Ben-Hadad king of Aram, mustering his whole army, marched on and laidsiege to Samaria.	24 Un tiempo después, Ben Hadad, rey de Aram, movilizó todo su ejército y sitió a Samaría.
25 In Samaria there was great famine, and so strict was the siege that the head of a donkey sold foreighty shekels of silver, and one quarter-kab of wild onions for five shekels of silver.	25 Hubo entonces mucha hambre en Samaría, y el asedio era tan duro que una cabeza de asno valía ochenta siclos de plata, y unos puñados de estiércol de paloma, cinco siclos de plata.
26 Now as the king was passing along the city wal , a woman shouted, 'Help, my lord king!'	26 Mientras el rey de Israel pasaba sobre la muralla, una mujer le gritó: «¡Socorro, majestad!».
27 'If Yahweh does not help you,' he retorted, 'where can I find help for you? From the threshing-floor?From the winepress?'	27 El respondió: «¡No, que te socorra el Señor! ¿Con qué podría socorrerte yo? ¿Con los productos de la era o del lagar?».
28 Then the king asked, 'What is the matter?' 'This woman here', she answered, 'said to me, "Give upyour son; we will eat him today, and eat my son tomorrow."	28 Luego añadió: «¿Qué te pasa?». Ella respondió: «Esta mujer me dijo: Trae a tu hijo; lo comeremos hoy, y mañana comeremos el mío.
29 So we cooked my son and ate him. Next day, I said to her, "Give up your son for us to eat." But shehas hidden her son.'	29 Entonces cocinamos a mi hijo y lo comimos. Al día siguiente, yo le dije: Trae a tu hijo para que lo comamos. Pero ella lo había escondido».
30 On hearing the woman's words, the king tore his clothes; the king was walking on the wal , and thepeople saw that underneath he was wearing sackcloth next his body.	30 Al oír las palabras de aquella mujer, el rey rasgó sus vestiduras; y como pasaba sobre el muro, la gente vio el cilicio que llevaba sobre su carne.
31 'May God bring unnameable ills on me, and worse il s, too,' he said, 'if the head of Elisha son ofShaphat remains on his shoulders today!'	31 El rey dijo: «Que Dios me castigue si Eliseo, hijo de Safat, queda hoy con la cabeza sobre el cuello».
32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger aheadbut, before the man arrived, Elisha had said to the elders, 'Do you see how this son of a murderer has givenorders to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door; hold the door against him. Isn't thatthe sound of his master's step behind him?'	32 Eliseo estaba sentado en su casa, y los ancianos estaban sentados con él. El rey le envió a uno de sus hombres; pero antes que llegara el mensajero, Eliseo dijo a los ancianos: «¿Han visto que este hijo de asesino envía a un hombre a cortarme la cabeza? Estén atentos, y cuando llegue el mensajero, empújenlo con la puerta y atránquenla bien. ¿Acaso no se oyen los pasos de su señor que viene detrás de él?».
33 He was stil actually speaking, when the king arrived and said, 'This misery plainly comes fromYahweh. Why should I stil trust in Yahweh?'	33 Todavía les estaba hablando, cuando llegó el rey y le dijo: «Todo este mal nos viene del Señor. ¿Qué puedo esperar todavía del Señor?».
