1 The brotherhood of prophets said to Elisha, 'Look, the place where we are living with you is too smal forus.	1 - I figli dei profeti dissero ad Eliseo: «Ecco, il luogo dove noi abitiamo dinanzi a te è troppo angusto per noi;
2 Let us go to the Jordan, then, and each of us cut a beam there, and we will make our living quartersthere.' He replied, 'Go.'	2 andiamo fino al Giordano e ciascuno prenderà dalla selva la sua porzione di legname per edificare un luogo di abitazione». Eliseo rispose: «Andate».
3 'Be good enough to go with your servants,' one of them said. 'I wil go,' he replied,	3 E uno di loro soggiunse: «Vieni anche tu co' tuoi servi». Ed egli rispose: «Verrò anch'io».
4 and went with them. On reaching the Jordan they began cutting down timber.	4 E andò con essi. Venuti che furono al Giordano, accadde che, mentre tagliavano le legna,
5 But, as one of them was felling his beam, the iron axehead fel into the water. 'Alas, my lord,' heexclaimed, 'and it was a borrowed one too!'	5 uno di essi nell'abbattere una pianta, lasciò cadere il ferro della scure nell'acqua e si mise a gridare: «Ohimè! Ohimè! Ohimè! mio signore, io l'avevo presa a prestito!».
6 'Where did it fal ?' the man of God asked; and he showed him the spot. Then, cutting a stick, Elisha threw it in at that point and made the iron axehead float.	6 L'uomo di Dio gli disse: «Dove è caduta?», e quegli gli mostrò il luogo. Eliseo allora tagliò un legno, lo mise a quel posto e il ferro venne a galla.
7 'Lift it out,' he said; and the man stretched out his hand and took it.	7 Allora disse: «Prendilo»; e l'altro stese la mano e lo prese.
8 The king of Aram was at war with Israel. He conferred with his officers and said, 'You must attack atsuch and such a place.'	8 Il re di Siria era in guerra con Israele e in un consiglio che tenne coi suoi servi, disse: «Facciamo un'imboscata nel tale e nel tal luogo».
9 Elisha, however, sent word to the king of Israel, 'Be on your guard about such and such a place,because the Aramaeans are going to attack it.'	9 Mandò adunque l'uomo di Dio a dire al re d'Israele: «Guardati dal passare per quel luogo, poichè i Siri stanno in agguato».
10 The king of Israel accordingly sent men to the place which Elisha had named. And he kept warning theking, and the king stayed on the alert; and this happened more than once or twice.	10 Il re d'Israele mandò al luogo indicato dal servo di Dio, lo occupò in precedenza e vi si premunì non una sol volta nè due.
11 The king of Aram grew very much disturbed over this. He summoned his officers, and said, 'Tel mewhich of you is betraying us to the king of Israel.'	11 Perciò il re di Siria ne fu sconcertato e chiamati i suoi servi, disse: «Perchè non mi indicate chi sia il mio traditore presso il re d'Israele?».
12 'No one, my lord king,' one of his officers replied. 'It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel. The words you utterin your bedchamber, he reveals to the king of Israel.'	12 Uno dei suoi servi rispose: «Nessuno, o re mio signore; ma è Eliseo profeta, che trovasi in Israele, colui che indica al re tutto ciò che tu vai dicendo nella tua stanza».
13 'Go and find out where he is,' the king said, 'so that I can send people to capture him.' Word wasbrought to him, 'He is now in Dothan.'	13 E disse a loro: «Andate e vedete dove sia, perchè io mandi a pigliarlo». Gli fu annunziato che era in Dotan.
14 So he sent horses and chariots there, and a large force; and these, arriving during the night,surrounded the town.	14 Mandò adunque colà cavalli e carri e un forte stuolo di soldati, i quali essendo arrivati di notte, assediarono la città.
15 Next day, Elisha got up early and went out; and there surrounding the town was an armed force withhorses and chariots. 'Oh, my lord,' his servant said, 'what are we to do?'	15 Sul far del giorno però, alzatosi il servo dell'uomo di Dio, uscì fuori e vide l'esercito intorno alla città, coi cavalli e carri e gliene portò notizia, dicendo: «Ohimè! Ohimè! Ohimè! mio signore, cosa faremo?».
16 'Do not be afraid,' he replied, 'for there are more on our side than on theirs.'	16 Ma quegli rispose: «Non temere. Son più quelli che stanno con noi, che non quelli che stanno con loro».
17 And Elisha prayed. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'open his eyes and make him see.' Yahweh opened theservant's eyes, and he saw the mountain covered in fiery horses and chariots surrounding Elisha.	17 Dopo aver pregato, Eliseo disse: «Signore, apri gli occhi di costui, affinchè vegga». E il Signore aprì gli occhi del servo, il quale vide tutta la montagna piena di cavalli e di carri di fuoco intorno ad Eliseo.
18 As the Aramaeans came down towards him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, 'I beg you to strike these peoplesun-blind.' And, at Elisha's word, he struck them sun-blind.	18 I nemici poi discesero verso Eliseo, il quale pregò il Signore, dicendo: «Colpisci, o Signore, di cecità questa gente». E il Signore li colpì, affinchè secondo la parola di Eliseo, non avessero a vedere.
19 Then Elisha said to them, 'This is not the road, nor is this the town. Follow me; I shal lead you to theman you are looking for.' But he led them to Samaria.	19 Disse allora ad essi Eliseo: «Non è questa la via e non è questa la città che voi cercate». Li condusse in Samaria;
20 As they entered Samaria, Elisha said, 'Yahweh, open these people's eyes, and let them see.' Yahwehopened their eyes and they saw; they were inside Samaria.	20 e quando furono entrati in Samaria, disse Eliseo: «Signore, apri gli occhi di costoro affinchè veggano». E il Signore aprì gli occhi loro e videro di essere nel mezzo di Samaria.
21 When the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, 'Shal I kil them, father?'	21 Il re di Israele, quando li ebbe veduti, domandò ad Eliseo: «Li devo uccidere, padre mio?».
22 'Do not kil them,' he replied. 'Do you kil your own prisoners with sword and bow? Offer them food andwater, so that they can eat and drink, and then let them go back to their master.'	22 Ma egli rispose: «Non ucciderli; tu infatti non li hai presi colla spada e coll'arco tuo, per aver diritto di ucciderli; ma metti loro davanti pane e acqua, perchè mangino e bevano e se ne tornino al loro signore».
23 So the king provided a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them off andthey went back to their master. Aramaean raiding parties never invaded the territory of Israel again.	23 E fu portata loro una gran quantità di cibo e mangiarono e bevettero: poi li lasciò partire e se ne tornarono al loro signore, e i predoni della Siria non vennero più nella terra d'Israele.
24 It happened after this that Ben-Hadad king of Aram, mustering his whole army, marched on and laidsiege to Samaria.	24 Dopo di ciò Benadad, re della Siria, riunì tutto il suo esercito e salì per assediare Samaria.
25 In Samaria there was great famine, and so strict was the siege that the head of a donkey sold foreighty shekels of silver, and one quarter-kab of wild onions for five shekels of silver.	25 In Samaria vi fu una grande carestia; e la città restò assediata tanto, che la testa di un asino era venduta per ottanta sicli d'argento e la quarta parte di un cabo di sterco di colombi per cinque sicli d'argento.
26 Now as the king was passing along the city wal , a woman shouted, 'Help, my lord king!'	26 Mentre il re passava sulle mura, una donna gli gridò, dicendo: «Salvami, o re mio signore».
27 'If Yahweh does not help you,' he retorted, 'where can I find help for you? From the threshing-floor?From the winepress?'	27 Ed egli disse: «Non ti salva il Signore; come posso io salvarti? col prodotto dell'aia o del torchio?». Poi il re soggiunse: «Che vuoi tu?», ed essa rispose:
28 Then the king asked, 'What is the matter?' 'This woman here', she answered, 'said to me, "Give upyour son; we will eat him today, and eat my son tomorrow."	28 «Questa donna mi ha detto: - Dammi il figliuol tuo che lo mangeremo oggi; domani poi mangeremo il mio. -
29 So we cooked my son and ate him. Next day, I said to her, "Give up your son for us to eat." But shehas hidden her son.'	29 Abbiamo adunque cotto il mio figliuolo e l'abbiamo mangiato. Poi il giorno seguente dissi a lei: - Dammi il tuo figlio, che lo mangeremo -; ma essa lo ha nascosto».
30 On hearing the woman's words, the king tore his clothes; the king was walking on the wal , and thepeople saw that underneath he was wearing sackcloth next his body.	30 Avendo ciò udito, il re si stracciò le vesti e passava sopra le mura; e tutto il popolo vide il cilicio, di cui era coperto sopra la carne.
31 'May God bring unnameable ills on me, and worse il s, too,' he said, 'if the head of Elisha son ofShaphat remains on his shoulders today!'	31 Disse allora il re: «Dio mi faccia questo e mi aggiunga quello, se la testa di Eliseo figliuolo di Safat resta oggi sopra di lui».
32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger aheadbut, before the man arrived, Elisha had said to the elders, 'Do you see how this son of a murderer has givenorders to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door; hold the door against him. Isn't thatthe sound of his master's step behind him?'	32 Eliseo frattanto se ne stava in casa in compagnia di alcuni anziani. Il re mandò innanzi un messaggero, ma prima che esso arrivasse, Eliseo disse ai vecchi: «Non sapete che questo figlio di un omicida ha mandato uno a tagliarmi la testa? Badate bene quando verrà il messo, chiudete la porta e non lasciatelo entrare; poichè ecco si sente già dietro a lui il rumor dei passi del suo signore».
33 He was stil actually speaking, when the king arrived and said, 'This misery plainly comes fromYahweh. Why should I stil trust in Yahweh?'	33 Stava ancora parlando, quando giunse il messaggero che veniva a lui. [Il re] diceva: «Ecco un male così grande viene dal Signore; che posso mai io aspettarmi di più dal Signore?».
