1 The brotherhood of prophets said to Elisha, 'Look, the place where we are living with you is too smal forus.	1 I discepoli dei profeti dissero ad Eliseo: "Ecco, il luogo in cui noi abitiamo presso di te è troppo stretto per noi.
2 Let us go to the Jordan, then, and each of us cut a beam there, and we will make our living quartersthere.' He replied, 'Go.'	2 Se vuoi, andremo al Giordano, là prenderemo una trave per ciascuno e ci faremo un luogo per abitarvi". Egli rispose: "Andate pure!".
3 'Be good enough to go with your servants,' one of them said. 'I wil go,' he replied,	3 Uno di loro disse: "Degnati di venire con i tuoi servi". Egli rispose: "Verrò!".
4 and went with them. On reaching the Jordan they began cutting down timber.	4 E andò con loro. Giunti al Giordano, si misero a tagliare alcune piante.
5 But, as one of them was felling his beam, the iron axehead fel into the water. 'Alas, my lord,' heexclaimed, 'and it was a borrowed one too!'	5 Mentre uno di essi abbatteva la sua trave, il ferro cadde nell'acqua. Allora si mise a gridare: "Ah, mio signore, esso era stato preso in prestito!".
6 'Where did it fal ?' the man of God asked; and he showed him the spot. Then, cutting a stick, Elisha threw it in at that point and made the iron axehead float.	6 L'uomo di Dio domandò: "Dov'è caduto?". Quegli gli fece vedere il posto. Allora egli tagliò un pezzo di legno, lo gettò là e il ferro venne a galla.
7 'Lift it out,' he said; and the man stretched out his hand and took it.	7 Poi disse: "Prendilo!". Quegli stese la mano e lo prese.
8 The king of Aram was at war with Israel. He conferred with his officers and said, 'You must attack atsuch and such a place.'	8 Il re di Aram, mentre era in guerra con Israele, consigliò i suoi ufficiali dicendo: "Scendete e sistematevi in quel luogo determinato".
9 Elisha, however, sent word to the king of Israel, 'Be on your guard about such and such a place,because the Aramaeans are going to attack it.'	9 L'uomo di Dio mandò a dire al re d'Israele: "Sta' in guardia circa quel luogo, perché là scendono gli Aramei".
10 The king of Israel accordingly sent men to the place which Elisha had named. And he kept warning theking, and the king stayed on the alert; and this happened more than once or twice.	10 Il re d'Israele mandò ad esplorare il luogo che l'uomo di Dio gli aveva indicato e su cui l'aveva premunito e se ne stette in guardia. Questo si verificò non una né due volte soltanto.
11 The king of Aram grew very much disturbed over this. He summoned his officers, and said, 'Tel mewhich of you is betraying us to the king of Israel.'	11 Il cuore del re di Aram si turbò per questa cosa; perciò convocò i suoi ufficiali e disse loro: "Non mi sapete dire chi, tra noi, parteggia per il re d'Israele?".
12 'No one, my lord king,' one of his officers replied. 'It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel. The words you utterin your bedchamber, he reveals to the king of Israel.'	12 Uno degli ufficiali replicò: "No, o re mio signore, ma è Eliseo, il profeta che si trova in Israele, che riferisce al re d'Israele le parole che dici nella tua camera da letto".
13 'Go and find out where he is,' the king said, 'so that I can send people to capture him.' Word wasbrought to him, 'He is now in Dothan.'	13 Egli ordinò: "Andate a vedere dove egli si trova e io manderò a catturarlo". Gli fu riferito: "Ecco, si trova in Dotan".
14 So he sent horses and chariots there, and a large force; and these, arriving during the night,surrounded the town.	14 Allora vi mandò cavalli, carri e un forte drappello, che arrivarono di notte e circondarono la città.
15 Next day, Elisha got up early and went out; and there surrounding the town was an armed force withhorses and chariots. 'Oh, my lord,' his servant said, 'what are we to do?'	15 All'indomani, l'uomo di Dio si levò in fretta e uscì; ma ecco che un drappello circondava la città con cavalli e carri. Il suo servo gli disse: "Ah! Che faremo, mio signore?".
16 'Do not be afraid,' he replied, 'for there are more on our side than on theirs.'	16 Quegli rispose: "Non temere, perché c'è più gente con noi che con loro".
17 And Elisha prayed. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'open his eyes and make him see.' Yahweh opened theservant's eyes, and he saw the mountain covered in fiery horses and chariots surrounding Elisha.	17 Eliseo pregò così: "Signore, apri i suoi occhi perché possa vedere". Il Signore aprì gli occhi del servo e questi vide: ecco il monte era pieno di cavalli e di carri di fuoco che circondavano Eliseo.
18 As the Aramaeans came down towards him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, 'I beg you to strike these peoplesun-blind.' And, at Elisha's word, he struck them sun-blind.	18 Poiché gli Aramei scendevano verso di lui, Eliseo pregò così il Signore: "Colpisci di cecità questa gente!". E li colpì di cecità, secondo la parola di Eliseo.
19 Then Elisha said to them, 'This is not the road, nor is this the town. Follow me; I shal lead you to theman you are looking for.' But he led them to Samaria.	19 Allora Eliseo disse loro: "Questa non è la strada e neppure la città; venite dietro a me e vi condurrò dall'uomo che voi cercate": li condusse a Samaria.
20 As they entered Samaria, Elisha said, 'Yahweh, open these people's eyes, and let them see.' Yahwehopened their eyes and they saw; they were inside Samaria.	20 Giunti che furono a Samaria, Eliseo disse: "O Signore, apri i loro occhi, perché vedano". Il Signore aprì i loro occhi e videro: si trovavano dentro Samaria!
21 When the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, 'Shal I kil them, father?'	21 Quando li vide, il re d'Israele disse a Eliseo: "Li devo uccidere, padre mio?".
22 'Do not kil them,' he replied. 'Do you kil your own prisoners with sword and bow? Offer them food andwater, so that they can eat and drink, and then let them go back to their master.'	22 Eliseo rispose: "Non ucciderli; uccidi forse quelli stessi che fai prigionieri con la tua spada e il tuo arco? Metti davanti ad essi pane ed acqua perché mangino e bevano e poi ritornino dal loro signore".
23 So the king provided a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them off andthey went back to their master. Aramaean raiding parties never invaded the territory of Israel again.	23 Fu preparato per essi un gran pranzo. Dopo che ebbero mangiato e bevuto, li rimandò ed essi ritornarono dal loro signore. D'allora in poi le bande di Aram non osarono più venire nel territorio d'Israele.
24 It happened after this that Ben-Hadad king of Aram, mustering his whole army, marched on and laidsiege to Samaria.	24 Dopo questi fatti, avvenne che Ben-Adàd, re di Aram, raccolse tutto il suo esercito e salì per porre l'assedio a Samaria.
25 In Samaria there was great famine, and so strict was the siege that the head of a donkey sold foreighty shekels of silver, and one quarter-kab of wild onions for five shekels of silver.	25 Ci fu una grande fame in Samaria a causa dell'assedio, a tal punto che una testa d'asino valeva ottanta sicli d'argento e un quarto di qab di tuberi valeva cinque sicli.
26 Now as the king was passing along the city wal , a woman shouted, 'Help, my lord king!'	26 Mentre il re transitava sulle mura, una donna gli gridò: "Salvami, o re mio signore!".
27 'If Yahweh does not help you,' he retorted, 'where can I find help for you? From the threshing-floor?From the winepress?'	27 Questi le rispose: "Se non ti salva il Signore, come ti salverò io? Forse con i prodotti dell'aia o del torchio?".
28 Then the king asked, 'What is the matter?' 'This woman here', she answered, 'said to me, "Give upyour son; we will eat him today, and eat my son tomorrow."	28 Poi il re le soggiunse: "Che cosa hai?". Ella rispose: "Questa donna mi ha detto: "Dammi tuo figlio perché lo mangiamo oggi; mio figlio lo mangeremo domani".
29 So we cooked my son and ate him. Next day, I said to her, "Give up your son for us to eat." But shehas hidden her son.'	29 Così abbiamo fatto cuocere mio figlio e l'abbiamo mangiato; poi il giorno seguente le ho detto: "Dammi tuo figlio perché lo mangiamo", ma lei ha nascosto suo figlio".
30 On hearing the woman's words, the king tore his clothes; the king was walking on the wal , and thepeople saw that underneath he was wearing sackcloth next his body.	30 Udito che ebbe le parole della donna, il re si stracciò le vesti mentre transitava sulle mura, cosicché il popolo vide che sotto, aderente alla carne, c'era il sacco.
31 'May God bring unnameable ills on me, and worse il s, too,' he said, 'if the head of Elisha son ofShaphat remains on his shoulders today!'	31 E disse: "Che Dio mi faccia questo male e mi aggiunga ancora quest'altro, se la testa di Eliseo, figlio di Safat, resterà oggi sulle sue spalle!".
32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger aheadbut, before the man arrived, Elisha had said to the elders, 'Do you see how this son of a murderer has givenorders to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door; hold the door against him. Isn't thatthe sound of his master's step behind him?'	32 Ora, mentre Eliseo se ne stava in casa sua e gli anziani stavano con lui, il re si fece precedere da un messaggero. Prima che questi giungesse da lui, egli disse agli anziani: "Avete visto che quel figlio di assassino ha mandato a tagliarmi la testa? Osservate: quando giungerà il messaggero, sbarrate la porta impedendogli così di entrare; forse che dietro di lui non v'è il rumore dei passi del suo signore?".
33 He was stil actually speaking, when the king arrived and said, 'This misery plainly comes fromYahweh. Why should I stil trust in Yahweh?'	33 Mentre ancora parlava con essi, ecco che il re discese da lui e disse: "Ecco, questo male proviene dal Signore; che cosa posso ancora aspettarmi da lui?".
