NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 The brotherhood of prophets said to Elisha, 'Look, the place where we are living with you is too smal forus.	1 Os filhos dos profetas disseram a Eliseu: Vê: o lugar em que moramos contigo tornou-se estreito demais para nós.
2 Let us go to the Jordan, then, and each of us cut a beam there, and we will make our living quartersthere.' He replied, 'Go.'	2 Vamos até o Jordão, tomemos dali cada um de nós uma viga, e construamos ali uma sala em que habitemos. Ide, respondeu-lhes ele.
3 'Be good enough to go with your servants,' one of them said. 'I wil go,' he replied,	3 Mas vem também tu com os teus servos, ajuntou um deles. Eu irei, disse ele.
4 and went with them. On reaching the Jordan they began cutting down timber.	4 E partiu com eles. Chegados ao Jordão, puseram-se a cortar madeira.
5 But, as one of them was felling his beam, the iron axehead fel into the water. 'Alas, my lord,' heexclaimed, 'and it was a borrowed one too!'	5 Ora, estando um deles a cortar uma árvore, eis que o seu machado caiu na água. Ah, meu senhor!, exclamou ele. Porque o machado era emprestado.
6 'Where did it fal ?' the man of God asked; and he showed him the spot. Then, cutting a stick, Elisha threw it in at that point and made the iron axehead float.	6 Onde caiu ele?, perguntou o homem de Deus. Ele mostrou-lhe o lugar. Eliseu cortou um pedaço de madeira, jogou-o na água, e o machado veio à tona.
7 'Lift it out,' he said; and the man stretched out his hand and took it.	7 Tira-o, disse ele. O homem estendeu a mão e tomou-o.
8 The king of Aram was at war with Israel. He conferred with his officers and said, 'You must attack atsuch and such a place.'	8 O rei da Síria, que estava em guerra contra Israel, teve conselho com os seus servos e disse-lhes: Em tal e tal lugar estará o meu acampamento.
9 Elisha, however, sent word to the king of Israel, 'Be on your guard about such and such a place,because the Aramaeans are going to attack it.'	9 Mandou então o homem de Deus dizer ao rei de Israel: Guarda-te de passar por tal lugar, porque os sírios estão ali.
10 The king of Israel accordingly sent men to the place which Elisha had named. And he kept warning theking, and the king stayed on the alert; and this happened more than once or twice.	10 O rei de Israel mandou homens ao lugar indicado pelo homem de Deus em sua mensagem. E o rei acautelou-se não apenas uma ou duas vezes.
11 The king of Aram grew very much disturbed over this. He summoned his officers, and said, 'Tel mewhich of you is betraying us to the king of Israel.'	11 O rei da Síria, alvoroçado por causa disso, chamou seus servos e disse-lhes: Não me descobrireis quem dos nossos nos traiu junto do rei de Israel?
12 'No one, my lord king,' one of his officers replied. 'It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel. The words you utterin your bedchamber, he reveals to the king of Israel.'	12 Não foi ninguém, ó rei, meu senhor, respondeu um deles; é o profeta Eliseu quem conta ao rei de Israel os planos que fazes em teu quarto de dormir.
13 'Go and find out where he is,' the king said, 'so that I can send people to capture him.' Word wasbrought to him, 'He is now in Dothan.'	13 Ide, disse o rei, e vede onde ele está, para que eu o mande prender. Disseram ao rei: Ele está agora em Dotã.
14 So he sent horses and chariots there, and a large force; and these, arriving during the night,surrounded the town.	14 O rei enviou ali cavalos, carros e uma companhia importante; chegaram de noite e cercaram o lugar.
15 Next day, Elisha got up early and went out; and there surrounding the town was an armed force withhorses and chariots. 'Oh, my lord,' his servant said, 'what are we to do?'	15 Na manhã seguinte, o homem de Deus, saindo fora, viu o exército que cercava a cidade com cavalos e carros. Seu servo disse-lhe: Ai, meu senhor! Que vamos fazer agora?
16 'Do not be afraid,' he replied, 'for there are more on our side than on theirs.'	16 Não temas, respondeu Eliseu; os que estão conosco são mais numerosos do que os que estão com eles.
17 And Elisha prayed. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'open his eyes and make him see.' Yahweh opened theservant's eyes, and he saw the mountain covered in fiery horses and chariots surrounding Elisha.	17 Orou Eliseu e disse: Senhor, abri-lhe os olhos, para que veja. O Senhor abriu os olhos do servo, e este viu o monte cheio de cavalos e carros de fogo ao redor de Eliseu.
18 As the Aramaeans came down towards him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, 'I beg you to strike these peoplesun-blind.' And, at Elisha's word, he struck them sun-blind.	18 {Entretanto, os sírios} desciam para ele, e Eliseu orou ao Senhor, dizendo: Feri de cegueira estes homens. E o Senhor, ouvindo a prece de Eliseu, feriu-os de cegueira.
19 Then Elisha said to them, 'This is not the road, nor is this the town. Follow me; I shal lead you to theman you are looking for.' But he led them to Samaria.	19 Eliseu disse-lhes: Não é por aqui o caminho, nem é esta a cidade. Segui-me: vou conduzir-vos ao homem que buscais. E levou-os a Samaria.
20 As they entered Samaria, Elisha said, 'Yahweh, open these people's eyes, and let them see.' Yahwehopened their eyes and they saw; they were inside Samaria.	20 Tendo eles entrado em Samaria, Eliseu disse: Senhor, abri os olhos desses homens para que vejam. O Senhor abriu-lhes os olhos e eles viram que estavam em Samaria.
21 When the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, 'Shal I kil them, father?'	21 O rei de Israel, tendo-os visto, disse a Eliseu: Feri-los-ei, meu pai?
22 'Do not kil them,' he replied. 'Do you kil your own prisoners with sword and bow? Offer them food andwater, so that they can eat and drink, and then let them go back to their master.'	22 Não, respondeu ele. Fere aos que capturares com tua espada e teu arco. A estes, porém, dá-lhes pão e água, para que restaurem as forças e voltem em seguida para junto de seu senhor.
23 So the king provided a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them off andthey went back to their master. Aramaean raiding parties never invaded the territory of Israel again.	23 O rei mandou que se lhes servisse um grande banquete, e depois que acabaram de comer e beber, deixou-os em liberdade, e eles voltaram para o seu soberano. E a partir de então, os guerrilheiros sírios cessaram as suas incursões nas terras de Israel.
24 It happened after this that Ben-Hadad king of Aram, mustering his whole army, marched on and laidsiege to Samaria.	24 Depois disso, Ben-Hadad, rei da Síria, mobilizou todo o seu exército e subiu para pôr cerco diante de Samaria.
25 In Samaria there was great famine, and so strict was the siege that the head of a donkey sold foreighty shekels of silver, and one quarter-kab of wild onions for five shekels of silver.	25 A fome alastrou-se pela cidade e o cerco foi tão rude que uma cabeça de jumento valia oitenta siclos de prata, e a quarta parte de um cab de grãos, cinco siclos de prata.
26 Now as the king was passing along the city wal , a woman shouted, 'Help, my lord king!'	26 Um dia em que o rei circulava pela muralha, uma mulher gritou-lhe: Socorre-me, ó rei, meu senhor!
27 'If Yahweh does not help you,' he retorted, 'where can I find help for you? From the threshing-floor?From the winepress?'	27 O rei respondeu-lhe: Se o Senhor não te salva, com que te poderei eu socorrer? Porventura com a eira ou com o lagar?
28 Then the king asked, 'What is the matter?' 'This woman here', she answered, 'said to me, "Give upyour son; we will eat him today, and eat my son tomorrow."	28 E ajuntou: Que te aconteceu? Ela respondeu: Esta mulher, que aqui vês, disse-me: Dá-me o teu filho, para o comermos hoje; amanhã comeremos o meu.
29 So we cooked my son and ate him. Next day, I said to her, "Give up your son for us to eat." But shehas hidden her son.'	29 Cozemos então o meu filho e o comemos. No dia seguinte, quando eu lhe disse: Dá-me o teu filho, para que o comamos, ela o escondeu.
30 On hearing the woman's words, the king tore his clothes; the king was walking on the wal , and thepeople saw that underneath he was wearing sackcloth next his body.	30 Ouvindo o que lhe dizia a mulher, o rei rasgou as vestes; e como ia passando pela muralha, o povo viu que ele trazia um cilício sobre o corpo.
31 'May God bring unnameable ills on me, and worse il s, too,' he said, 'if the head of Elisha son ofShaphat remains on his shoulders today!'	31 Que Deus me trate com todo o rigor, se a cabeça de Eliseu, filho de Safat, lhe ficar ainda hoje sobre os ombros!
32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger aheadbut, before the man arrived, Elisha had said to the elders, 'Do you see how this son of a murderer has givenorders to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door; hold the door against him. Isn't thatthe sound of his master's step behind him?'	32 Ora, Eliseu achava-se em sua casa, e os anciãos sentados com ele. O rei se fizera preceder por um emissário; mas, antes que este chegasse, Eliseu disse aos anciãos: Vede como este filho de bandido manda alguém para cortar-me a cabeça? Atenção! Quando chegar o emissário, fechai-lhe a porta e repeli-o. Mas não se ouve já o ruído dos passos de seu amo, que o segue?
33 He was stil actually speaking, when the king arrived and said, 'This misery plainly comes fromYahweh. Why should I stil trust in Yahweh?'	33 Não tinha ainda acabado de falar, quando o mensageiro se apresentou diante dele e disse-lhe: Quando um tão grande mal nos vem do Senhor, que poderei eu esperar ainda?
