1 The brotherhood of prophets said to Elisha, 'Look, the place where we are living with you is too smal forus.	1 Les frères prophètes dirent à Élisée: “L’endroit où nous habitons avec toi est devenu trop petit pour nous.
2 Let us go to the Jordan, then, and each of us cut a beam there, and we will make our living quartersthere.' He replied, 'Go.'	2 Descendons jusqu’au Jourdain; là, chacun prendra un tronc et nous construirons un abri pour nous loger.” Il leur dit: “Allez-y!”
3 'Be good enough to go with your servants,' one of them said. 'I wil go,' he replied,	3 Mais l’un d’entre eux lui dit: “Accepte de venir avec tes serviteurs.” Il répondit: “J’irai.”
4 and went with them. On reaching the Jordan they began cutting down timber.	4 Il partit donc avec eux, ils arrivèrent au Jourdain et coupèrent du bois.
5 But, as one of them was felling his beam, the iron axehead fel into the water. 'Alas, my lord,' heexclaimed, 'and it was a borrowed one too!'	5 Tandis que l’un d’entre eux abattait un tronc, le fer de hache tomba dans l’eau. Il se mit à crier: “Ah! Ah! Mon seigneur! Et c’était une hache qu’on m’avait prêtée!”
6 'Where did it fal ?' the man of God asked; and he showed him the spot. Then, cutting a stick, Elisha threw it in at that point and made the iron axehead float.	6 L’homme de Dieu lui dit: “Où est-il tombé?” L’autre lui montra l’endroit. Élisée coupa un morceau de bois, le jeta dans l’eau et fit surnager le fer.
7 'Lift it out,' he said; and the man stretched out his hand and took it.	7 Il ajouta: “Remonte-le maintenant.” L’autre étendit sa main et reprit le fer.
8 The king of Aram was at war with Israel. He conferred with his officers and said, 'You must attack atsuch and such a place.'	8 Le roi d’Aram était en guerre avec Israël. Il tint conseil avec ses serviteurs et leur dit: “J’irai me mettre en embuscade à tel et tel endroit.”
9 Elisha, however, sent word to the king of Israel, 'Be on your guard about such and such a place,because the Aramaeans are going to attack it.'	9 Mais l’homme de Dieu envoya dire au roi d’Israël: “Ne passe pas par cet endroit, car les Araméens vont y descendre.”
10 The king of Israel accordingly sent men to the place which Elisha had named. And he kept warning theking, and the king stayed on the alert; and this happened more than once or twice.	10 Alors le roi d’Israël fit porter des ordres à l’endroit que l’homme de Dieu lui avait dit. Élisée l’avertissait ainsi, et pas seulement une fois ou deux, et le roi se tenait sur ses gardes.
11 The king of Aram grew very much disturbed over this. He summoned his officers, and said, 'Tel mewhich of you is betraying us to the king of Israel.'	11 Le roi d’Aram en fut très préoccupé; il appela ses serviteurs et leur dit: “Dites-moi donc lequel des nôtres est pour le roi d’Israël.”
12 'No one, my lord king,' one of his officers replied. 'It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel. The words you utterin your bedchamber, he reveals to the king of Israel.'	12 Un de ses serviteurs répondit: “Personne, mon seigneur le roi, c’est Élisée, le prophète d’Israël, qui révèle au roi d’Israël même les paroles que tu prononces dans ta chambre à coucher.”
13 'Go and find out where he is,' the king said, 'so that I can send people to capture him.' Word wasbrought to him, 'He is now in Dothan.'	13 Le roi leur dit: “Allez et voyez où il est, et je le ferai enlever.” On lui donna une information: “Il est à Dotan.”
14 So he sent horses and chariots there, and a large force; and these, arriving during the night,surrounded the town.	14 Le roi envoya donc là-bas des chevaux, des chars et une troupe nombreuse; ils arrivèrent de nuit pour encercler la ville.
15 Next day, Elisha got up early and went out; and there surrounding the town was an armed force withhorses and chariots. 'Oh, my lord,' his servant said, 'what are we to do?'	15 Le serviteur de l’homme de Dieu se leva de bon matin; lorsqu’il sortit, une troupe entourait la ville avec des chevaux et des chars. Le garçon dit à Élisée: “Ah, mon seigneur! Qu’allons-nous faire?”
16 'Do not be afraid,' he replied, 'for there are more on our side than on theirs.'	16 Il lui répondit: “Ne crains pas, car ceux qui sont avec nous sont plus nombreux que ceux qui sont avec eux.”
17 And Elisha prayed. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'open his eyes and make him see.' Yahweh opened theservant's eyes, and he saw the mountain covered in fiery horses and chariots surrounding Elisha.	17 Élisée se mit en prière: “Yahvé, ouvre ses yeux pour qu’il voie.” Et Yahvé ouvrit les yeux du jeune homme, il vit la montagne couverte de chevaux et de chars de feu tout autour d’Élisée.
18 As the Aramaeans came down towards him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, 'I beg you to strike these peoplesun-blind.' And, at Elisha's word, he struck them sun-blind.	18 Les Araméens descendirent vers Élisée. Il fit cette prière à Yahvé: “Daigne frapper d’aveuglement cette troupe!” Et Yahvé les frappa d’aveuglement selon la parole d’Élisée.
19 Then Elisha said to them, 'This is not the road, nor is this the town. Follow me; I shal lead you to theman you are looking for.' But he led them to Samaria.	19 Élisée leur dit: “Ce n’est pas ici le chemin et ce n’est pas ici la ville, suivez-moi et je vous conduirai vers l’homme que vous cherchez.” Et il les conduisit à Samarie.
20 As they entered Samaria, Elisha said, 'Yahweh, open these people's eyes, and let them see.' Yahwehopened their eyes and they saw; they were inside Samaria.	20 Lorsqu’ils furent entrés dans Samarie, Élisée dit: “Yahvé! Ouvre les yeux de ces hommes et qu’ils voient.” Yahvé ouvrit leurs yeux et ils virent qu’ils étaient au milieu de Samarie.
21 When the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, 'Shal I kil them, father?'	21 Le roi d’Israël, en les voyant, dit à Élisée: “Dois-je les frapper, mon père?”
22 'Do not kil them,' he replied. 'Do you kil your own prisoners with sword and bow? Offer them food andwater, so that they can eat and drink, and then let them go back to their master.'	22 Il répondit: “Ne les frappe pas. Frappe-t-on ceux qu’on a fait prisonniers par l’épée ou l’arc? Donne-leur plutôt du pain et de l’eau pour qu’ils mangent et qu’ils boivent; ils retourneront ensuite chez leur maître.”
23 So the king provided a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them off andthey went back to their master. Aramaean raiding parties never invaded the territory of Israel again.	23 Alors le roi leur fit servir un bon repas, ils mangèrent et ils burent. Puis il les renvoya et ils s’en retournèrent chez leur maître; à partir de ce moment-là, les bandes araméennes cessèrent leurs raids sur le territoire d’Israël.
24 It happened after this that Ben-Hadad king of Aram, mustering his whole army, marched on and laidsiege to Samaria.	24 Beaucoup plus tard, Ben-Hadad roi d’Aram rassembla toute son armée et monta pour assiéger Samarie.
25 In Samaria there was great famine, and so strict was the siege that the head of a donkey sold foreighty shekels of silver, and one quarter-kab of wild onions for five shekels of silver.	25 La famine fut grande à Samarie, la situation était telle qu’une tête d’âne valait 80 pièces d’argent et qu’une petite mesure de pois chiches en valait cinq.
26 Now as the king was passing along the city wal , a woman shouted, 'Help, my lord king!'	26 Au moment où le roi passait sur le rempart, une femme cria vers lui: “Sauve-moi, mon seigneur le roi!”
27 'If Yahweh does not help you,' he retorted, 'where can I find help for you? From the threshing-floor?From the winepress?'	27 Il répondit: “Si Yahvé ne te sauve pas, que puis-je faire? N’attends rien de moi pour manger ou pour boire?”
28 Then the king asked, 'What is the matter?' 'This woman here', she answered, 'said to me, "Give upyour son; we will eat him today, and eat my son tomorrow."	28 Puis le roi lui dit: “Qu’y a-t-il?” Elle répondit: “La femme que voici m’avait dit: Donne ton fils pour que nous le mangions aujourd’hui; demain nous mangerons mon fils.
29 So we cooked my son and ate him. Next day, I said to her, "Give up your son for us to eat." But shehas hidden her son.'	29 Nous avons donc fait cuire mon fils et nous l’avons mangé, mais lorsque le jour suivant je lui ai dit: ‘Donne ton fils pour que nous le mangions’, elle l’a caché.”
30 On hearing the woman's words, the king tore his clothes; the king was walking on the wal , and thepeople saw that underneath he was wearing sackcloth next his body.	30 En entendant les paroles de cette femme, le roi déchira ses vêtements, et comme il était sur le rempart, le peuple vit qu’en dessous de ses vêtements il portait un sac à même le corps.
31 'May God bring unnameable ills on me, and worse il s, too,' he said, 'if the head of Elisha son ofShaphat remains on his shoulders today!'	31 Le roi dit: “Que Dieu me maudisse et me maudisse encore, si la tête d’Élisée fils de Chafat reste aujourd’hui sur ses épaules!”
32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger aheadbut, before the man arrived, Elisha had said to the elders, 'Do you see how this son of a murderer has givenorders to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door; hold the door against him. Isn't thatthe sound of his master's step behind him?'	32 Or Élisée était assis dans sa maison, et les anciens étaient assis autour de lui. Le roi envoya un de ses hommes, mais avant que le messager n’arrive, Élisée avait dit aux anciens: “Savez-vous que ce fils d’assassin envoie quelqu’un pour me couper la tête? Faites attention! Lorsque le messager viendra, fermez la porte et repoussez-le avec la porte. On entendra sûrement les pas de son maître juste derrière les siens.”
33 He was stil actually speaking, when the king arrived and said, 'This misery plainly comes fromYahweh. Why should I stil trust in Yahweh?'	33 Élisée parlait encore avec eux lorsque le roi arriva chez lui: “Ce malheur vient de Yahvé, dit-il, que puis-je encore espérer de Yahvé?”
