1 The brotherhood of prophets said to Elisha, 'Look, the place where we are living with you is too smal forus.	1 Or i figliuoli de' profeti dissero ad Eliseo: Tu sai, come il luogo, dove noi abitiamo presso di te, è angusto per noi.
2 Let us go to the Jordan, then, and each of us cut a beam there, and we will make our living quartersthere.' He replied, 'Go.'	2 Andiamo presso al Giordano, e ciascun di noi si prenda dal bosco la sua porzione di legname, onde ci fabbrichiamo un luogo da abitare. Ed egli disse: Andate.
3 'Be good enough to go with your servants,' one of them said. 'I wil go,' he replied,	3 Ma disse un di loro: Vieni adunque anche tu co' tuoi servi. Rispose: Verrò.
4 and went with them. On reaching the Jordan they began cutting down timber.	4 E andò con loro, e giunti che fu erono al Giordano, tagliavano del legname.
5 But, as one of them was felling his beam, the iron axehead fel into the water. 'Alas, my lord,' heexclaimed, 'and it was a borrowed one too!'	5 Or egli avvenne, che mentre uno troncava una pianta, il ferro della scure cadde nell'acqua: e quegli sclamò, e disse: Ahi, ahi, ahi, signor mio! Questa me l'era io fatta imprestare.
6 'Where did it fal ?' the man of God asked; and he showed him the spot. Then, cutting a stick, Elisha threw it in at that point and made the iron axehead float.	6 E l'uomo di Dio disse: Dov'è ella caduta? E quegli additò a lui il luogo. Egli allora tagliò un pezzo di legno, e gettollo colà; e il ferro venne a galla,
7 'Lift it out,' he said; and the man stretched out his hand and took it.	7 Ed egli disse: Prendilo: e quegli stese la mano, e lo prese.
8 The king of Aram was at war with Israel. He conferred with his officers and said, 'You must attack atsuch and such a place.'	8 Or il re di Siria faceva guerra contro Israele, e tenne consiglio co' suoi servi, e disse: Mettiamo un'imboscata nel tale, e nel tal luogo.
9 Elisha, however, sent word to the king of Israel, 'Be on your guard about such and such a place,because the Aramaeans are going to attack it.'	9 Ma l uomo di Dio mandò a dire al re d'Israele: Guardati dal passare pel tal luogo; perocché vi sono i Siri in aguato.
10 The king of Israel accordingly sent men to the place which Elisha had named. And he kept warning theking, and the king stayed on the alert; and this happened more than once or twice.	10 Per la qual cosa il re d'Israele mandò preventivamente ad occupare il luogo indicatogli dall'uom di Dio; ed ivi si premunì non una volta, né
11 The king of Aram grew very much disturbed over this. He summoned his officers, and said, 'Tel mewhich of you is betraying us to the king of Israel.'	11 E questa cosa turbò lo spirito del re della Siria, e raunati i suoi servi, disse: Perchè non mi fate voi sapere chi sia, che mi tradisce presso il re d'Israele.
12 'No one, my lord king,' one of his officers replied. 'It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel. The words you utterin your bedchamber, he reveals to the king of Israel.'	12 E uno de' suoi servi disse: Non è cosi, o re mio signore, ma il profeta Eliseo, che si trova in Israele, fa sapere al re d'Israele tutte le parole, che tu dirai nella tua camera.
13 'Go and find out where he is,' the king said, 'so that I can send people to capture him.' Word wasbrought to him, 'He is now in Dothan.'	13 Ed egli disse loro: Andate, e informatevi dov' egli sia, affinchè io mandi a pigliarlo. E quelli gli diedero avviso, com' egli era in Dothan.
14 So he sent horses and chariots there, and a large force; and these, arriving during the night,surrounded the town.	14 Egli adunque vi mandò cavalli, e cocchi, e il meglio dell'esercito; i quali arrivaron di notte tempo, e circondarono la città.
15 Next day, Elisha got up early and went out; and there surrounding the town was an armed force withhorses and chariots. 'Oh, my lord,' his servant said, 'what are we to do?'	15 E il servo dell'uomo di Dio alzatosi alla punta del di, uscendo fuora, vide l'esercito attorno alla città, e i cavalli, e i cocchi; e portonne a lui la nuova, dicendo: Ahi, ahi, ahi, signor mio, che farem noi?
16 'Do not be afraid,' he replied, 'for there are more on our side than on theirs.'	16 E quegli rispose: Non temere: perocché abbiam più gente con noi, che non ne han quelli.
17 And Elisha prayed. 'Yahweh,' he said, 'open his eyes and make him see.' Yahweh opened theservant's eyes, and he saw the mountain covered in fiery horses and chariots surrounding Elisha.	17 E dopo aver fatta orazione, Eliseo disse: Signore, apri gli occhi a lui, affinchè egli vegga. E il Signore aperse gli occhi del servo, e vide a un tratto pieno il monte di cavalli, e di cocchi di fuoco intorno ad Eliseo.
18 As the Aramaeans came down towards him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, 'I beg you to strike these peoplesun-blind.' And, at Elisha's word, he struck them sun-blind.	18 Or i nemici andavano verso di lui, ed Eliseo fece orazione al Signore, e disse: Signore acceca questa gente. E il Signore li punì togliendo loro il vedere, secondo la preghiera di Eliseo.
19 Then Elisha said to them, 'This is not the road, nor is this the town. Follow me; I shal lead you to theman you are looking for.' But he led them to Samaria.	19 E disse loro Eliseo: Non è questa la strada, e non è questa la città: venitemi appresso, e mostrerovvi colui, che voi cercate. Li menò adunque a Samaria:
20 As they entered Samaria, Elisha said, 'Yahweh, open these people's eyes, and let them see.' Yahwehopened their eyes and they saw; they were inside Samaria.	20 Ed entrati che furono in Samaria, disse Eliseo: Signore, apri gli occhi loro, affinchè veggano. E il Signore aperse gli occhi loro, e videro come erano nel mezzo di Samaria.
21 When the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, 'Shal I kil them, father?'	21 E il re d'Israele avendoli veduti, disse ad Eliseo: Padre mio, li farò io morire?
22 'Do not kil them,' he replied. 'Do you kil your own prisoners with sword and bow? Offer them food andwater, so that they can eat and drink, and then let them go back to their master.'	22 Ma quegli disse: Tu non gli ucciderai: perocché non gli hai superati colla spada, e coll'arco tuo, onde tu abbi a ucciderli; ma fa loro portare del pane, e dell'acqua, affinchè mangino, e bevano, e se ne tornino al loro signore.
23 So the king provided a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them off andthey went back to their master. Aramaean raiding parties never invaded the territory of Israel again.	23 E fu portata loro gran copia di cibi, e mangiarono, e bevvero, ed ei e li licenziò, e se n'andarono al loro signore; e i ladroni di Siria non entraron più sulle terre d'Israele.
24 It happened after this that Ben-Hadad king of Aram, mustering his whole army, marched on and laidsiege to Samaria.	24 Or dopo queste cose egli avvenne, che Benadad re di Siria raunò tutto il suo esercito, e andò ad assediare Samaria.
25 In Samaria there was great famine, and so strict was the siege that the head of a donkey sold foreighty shekels of silver, and one quarter-kab of wild onions for five shekels of silver.	25 E fu gran fame in Samaria, e continuò tanto l'assedio, che arrivò a vendersi la testa di un asino ottanta monete d'argento, e la quarta parte di un cabo di sterco di colombi, cinque monete d'argento.
26 Now as the king was passing along the city wal , a woman shouted, 'Help, my lord king!'	26 E passando il re d'Israele sopra le mura, una donna esclamò, e disse a lui: Salvami, o re signor mio.
27 'If Yahweh does not help you,' he retorted, 'where can I find help for you? From the threshing-floor?From the winepress?'	27 Ed egli disse: Non ti salva il Signore; come poss' io salvarti? forse con quel, che si cava dall'aia, o dallo strettoio? E soggiunse il re: Che vuoi tu? Ed ella rispose:
28 Then the king asked, 'What is the matter?' 'This woman here', she answered, 'said to me, "Give upyour son; we will eat him today, and eat my son tomorrow."	28 Questa donna mi disse: Dà il tuo figliuolo, che lo mangiamo oggi, e do mani mangeremo il mio figliuolo.
29 So we cooked my son and ate him. Next day, I said to her, "Give up your son for us to eat." But shehas hidden her son.'	29 Noi adunque cuocemmo il mio figliuolo, e lo mangiammo; e il dì seguente io le dissi: Dà il tuo figliuolo, che lo mangiamo, ed ella ha nascosto il suo figliuolo.
30 On hearing the woman's words, the king tore his clothes; the king was walking on the wal , and thepeople saw that underneath he was wearing sackcloth next his body.	30 Udita tal cosa il re, stracciò le sue vesti; e in andando per le mura, tutto il popolo vide il cilicio, di cui era interiormente vestito sopra la carne.
31 'May God bring unnameable ills on me, and worse il s, too,' he said, 'if the head of Elisha son ofShaphat remains on his shoulders today!'	31 Ma il re disse: Dio mi faccia questo, e peggio, se oggi la testa di Eliseo figliuolo di Saphat rimane sul suo busto.
32 Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger aheadbut, before the man arrived, Elisha had said to the elders, 'Do you see how this son of a murderer has givenorders to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door; hold the door against him. Isn't thatthe sound of his master's step behind him?'	32 Or Eliseo stava sedendo a sua casa, e stavano a sedere con lui i seniori. (il re) adunque mandò innanzi un uomo, e prima che questo messo giungesse, disse (Eliseo) a que' seniori: Non sapete voi, che questo figliuolo di un omicida manda a farmi tagliare il capo? Badate adunque all'arrivo del messo di tener chiusa la porta, e di non lasciarlo entrare; perocché io sento il calpestio de' piedi del suo signore, che viene dietro a lui.
33 He was stil actually speaking, when the king arrived and said, 'This misery plainly comes fromYahweh. Why should I stil trust in Yahweh?'	33 Mentr'ei parlava tutt'ora comparve il messo spedito a lui, e quegli disse: Tu vedi quanto male ci viene dal Signore: che più aspetterò io dal Signore?
