2 Kings 13

1 In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king ofIsrael in Samaria. He reigned for seventeen years.	1 בשנת עשרים ושלש שנה ליואש בן אחזיהו מלך יהודה מלך יהואחז בן יהוא על ישראל בשמרון שבע עשרה שנה
2 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh and copied the sin into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had ledIsrael; he did not give it up.	2 ויעש הרע בעיני יהוה וילך אחר חטאת ירבעם בן נבט אשר החטיא את ישראל לא סר ממנה
3 This aroused Yahweh's anger against the Israelites, and he delivered them without respite into thepower of Hazael king of Aram and of Ben-Hadad son of Hazael.	3 ויחר אף יהוה בישראל ויתנם ביד חזאל מלך ארם וביד בן הדד בן חזאל כל הימים
4 Jehoahaz, however, tried to placate Yahweh, and Yahweh heard him, for he had seen the oppressionwhich the king of Aram was inflicting on Israel.	4 ויחל יהואחז את פני יהוה וישמע אליו יהוה כי ראה את לחץ ישראל כי לחץ אתם מלך ארם
5 Yahweh gave Israel a saviour who freed them from the grip of Aram, and the Israelites lived in theirtents as in the past.	5 ויתן יהוה לישראל מושיע ויצאו מתחת יד ארם וישבו בני ישראל באהליהם כתמול שלשום
6 But they did not give up the sin into which Jeroboam had led Israel; they persisted in it, and even thesacred pole stayed standing in Samaria.	6 אך לא סרו מחטאות בית ירבעם אשר החטי את ישראל בה הלך וגם האשרה עמדה בשמרון
7 Of Jehoahaz's army Yahweh left only fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers. Theking of Aram had destroyed them, making them like dust trampled under foot.	7 כי לא השאיר ליהואחז עם כי אם חמשים פרשים ועשרה רכב ועשרת אלפים רגלי כי אבדם מלך ארם וישמם כעפר לדש
8 The rest of the history of Jehoahaz, his entire career, his prowess, is this not recorded in the Book ofthe Annals of the Kings of Israel?	8 ויתר דברי יהואחז וכל אשר עשה וגבורתו הלוא הם כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי ישראל
9 Then Jehoahaz fel asleep with his ancestors, and was buried in Samaria; his son Joash succeededhim.	9 וישכב יהואחז עם אבתיו ויקברהו בשמרון וימלך יואש בנו תחתיו
10 In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, became king of Israel inSamaria. He reigned for sixteen years.	10 בשנת שלשים ושבע שנה ליואש מלך יהודה מלך יהואש בן יהואחז על ישראל בשמרון שש עשרה שנה
11 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, he did not give up the sin into which Jeroboam son of Nebathad led Israel; he persisted in it.	11 ויעשה הרע בעיני יהוה לא סר מכל חטאות ירבעם בן נבט אשר החטיא את ישראל בה הלך
12 The rest of the history of Joash, his entire career, his prowess, how he waged war on Amaziah king ofJudah, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel?	12 ויתר דברי יואש וכל אשר עשה וגבורתו אשר נלחם עם אמציה מלך יהודה הלוא הם כתובים על ספר דברי הימים למלכי ישראל
13 Then Joash fel asleep with his ancestors, and Jeroboam ascended his throne. Joash was buried inSamaria with the kings of Israel.	13 וישכב יואש עם אבתיו וירבעם ישב על כסאו ויקבר יואש בשמרון עם מלכי ישראל
14 When Elisha had fal en il of the il ness of which he was to die, Joash king of Israel went down to himand shedding tears over him said, 'Father! Father! Chariot of Israel and its chargers!'	14 ואלישע חלה את חליו אשר ימות בו וירד אליו יואש מלך ישראל ויבך על פניו ויאמר אבי אבי רכב ישראל ופרשיו
15 Elisha said to him, 'Bring bow and arrows,' and he sent for a bow and arrows.	15 ויאמר לו אלישע קח קשת וחצים ויקח אליו קשת וחצים
16 Then Elisha said to the king, 'Draw the bow,' and he drew it. Elisha put his hands over the hands ofthe king,	16 ויאמר למלך ישראל הרכב ידך על הקשת וירכב ידו וישם אלישע ידיו על ידי המלך
17 then he said, 'Open the window towards the east,' and he opened it. Then Elisha said, 'Shoot!' And heshot. Elisha said, 'Arrow of victory over Aram! You wil defeat Aram at Aphek-completely.'	17 ויאמר פתח החלון קדמה ויפתח ויאמר אלישע ירה ויור ויאמר חץ תשועה ליהוה וחץ תשועה בארם והכית את ארם באפק עד כלה
18 Elisha said, 'Take the arrows,' and he took them. Then he said to the king, 'Strike the ground,' and hestruck it three times, then stopped.	18 ויאמר קח החצים ויקח ויאמר למלך ישראל הך ארצה ויך שלש פעמים ויעמד
19 At this the man of God grew angry with him. 'You should have struck half a dozen times,' he said, 'andyou would have beaten Aram completely; now you wil beat Aram only three times.'	19 ויקצף עליו איש האלהים ויאמר להכות חמש או שש פעמים אז הכית את ארם עד כלה ועתה שלש פעמים תכה את ארם
20 Elisha died and was buried. Bands of Moabites were making incursions into the country every year.	20 וימת אלישע ויקברהו וגדודי מואב יבאו בארץ בא שנה
21 Some people happened to be carrying a man out for burial; at the sight of one of these bands, theyflung the man into the tomb of Elisha and made off. The man had no sooner touched the bones of Elisha than hecame to life and stood up on his feet.	21 ויהי הם קברים איש והנה ראו את הגדוד וישליכו את האיש בקבר אלישע וילך ויגע האיש בעצמות אלישע ויחי ויקם על רגליו
22 Hazael king of Aram had oppressed the Israelites throughout the lifetime of Jehoahaz,	22 וחזאל מלך ארם לחץ את ישראל כל ימי יהואחז
23 but Yahweh was kind and took pity on them. Because of the covenant which he had made withAbraham, Isaac and Jacob, he relented towards them; he had no wish to destroy them, he did not cast them outof his presence.	23 ויחן יהוה אתם וירחמם ויפן אליהם למען בריתו את אברהם יצחק ויעקב ולא אבה השחיתם ולא השליכם מעל פניו עד עתה
24 Hazael king of Aram died, and his son Ben-Hadad succeeded him.	24 וימת חזאל מלך ארם וימלך בן הדד בנו תחתיו
25 From Ben-Hadad son of Hazael, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz recaptured the towns which Hazael hadseized from his father Jehoahaz by force of arms. Joash defeated him three times and recovered the Israelitetowns.	25 וישב יהואש בן יהואחז ויקח את הערים מיד בן הדד בן חזאל אשר לקח מיד יהואחז אביו במלחמה שלש פעמים הכהו יואש וישב את ערי ישראל
