1 Kings 17

1 Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, 'By the life of Yahweh, God of Israel, whom Iserve, there will be neither dew nor rain these coming years unless I give the word.'	1 ויאמר אליהו התשבי מתשבי גלעד אל אחאב חי יהוה אלהי ישראל אשר עמדתי לפניו אם יהיה השנים האלה טל ומטר כי אם לפי דברי
2 The word of Yahweh came to him,	2 ויהי דבר יהוה אליו לאמר
3 'Go away from here, go east and hide by the torrent of Cherith, east of the Jordan.	3 לך מזה ופנית לך קדמה ונסתרת בנחל כרית אשר על פני הירדן
4 You can drink from the stream, and I have ordered the ravens to bring you food there.'	4 והיה מהנחל תשתה ואת הערבים צויתי לכלכלך שם
5 So he set out and did as Yahweh had said; he went and stayed by the torrent of Cherith, east of theJordan.	5 וילך ויעש כדבר יהוה וילך וישב בנחל כרית אשר על פני הירדן
6 The ravens brought him bread in the morning and meat in the evening, and he quenched his thirst atthe stream.	6 והערבים מביאים לו לחם ובשר בבקר ולחם ובשר בערב ומן הנחל ישתה
7 But after a while the stream dried up, for the country had had no rain.	7 ויהי מקץ ימים וייבש הנחל כי לא היה גשם בארץ
8 And then the word of Yahweh came to him,	8 ויהי דבר יהוה אליו לאמר
9 'Up and go to Zarephath in Sidonia, and stay there. I have ordered a widow there to give you food.'	9 קום לך צרפתה אשר לצידון וישבת שם הנה צויתי שם אשה אלמנה לכלכלך
10 So he went off to Sidon. And when he reached the city gate, there was a widow gathering sticks.Addressing her he said, 'Please bring a little water in a pitcher for me to drink.'	10 ויקם וילך צרפתה ויבא אל פתח העיר והנה שם אשה אלמנה מקששת עצים ויקרא אליה ויאמר קחי נא לי מעט מים בכלי ואשתה
11 She was on her way to fetch it when he cal ed after her. 'Please', he said, 'bring me a scrap of breadin your hand.'	11 ותלך לקחת ויקרא אליה ויאמר לקחי נא לי פת לחם בידך
12 'As Yahweh your God lives,' she replied, 'I have no baked bread, but only a handful of meal in a jarand a little oil in a jug; I am just gathering a stick or two to go and prepare this for myself and my son to eat, andthen we shall die.'	12 ותאמר חי יהוה אלהיך אם יש לי מעוג כי אם מלא כף קמח בכד ומעט שמן בצפחת והנני מקששת שנים עצים ובאתי ועשיתיהו לי ולבני ואכלנהו ומתנו
13 But Elijah said to her, 'Do not be afraid, go and do as you have said; but first make a little scone of itfor me and bring it to me, and then make some for yourself and for your son.	13 ויאמר אליה אליהו אל תיראי באי עשי כדברך אך עשי לי משם עגה קטנה בראשנה והוצאת לי ולך ולבנך תעשי באחרנה
14 For Yahweh, God of Israel, says this: Jar of meal shal not be spent, jug of oil shall not be emptied,before the day when Yahweh sends rain on the face of the earth.'	14 כי כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל כד הקמח לא תכלה וצפחת השמן לא תחסר עד יום תתן יהוה גשם על פני האדמה
15 The woman went and did as Elijah told her and they ate the food, she, himself and her son.	15 ותלך ותעשה כדבר אליהו ותאכל הוא והיא וביתה ימים
16 The jar of meal was not spent nor the jug of oil emptied, just as Yahweh had foretold through Elijah.	16 כד הקמח לא כלתה וצפחת השמן לא חסר כדבר יהוה אשר דבר ביד אליהו
17 It happened after this that the son of the mistress of the house fel sick; his il ness was so severe thatin the end he expired.	17 ויהי אחר הדברים האלה חלה בן האשה בעלת הבית ויהי חליו חזק מאד עד אשר לא נותרה בו נשמה
18 And the woman said to Elijah, 'What quarrel have you with me, man of God? Have you come here tobring my sins home to me and to kill my son?'	18 ותאמר אל אליהו מה לי ולך איש האלהים באת אלי להזכיר את עוני ולהמית את בני
19 'Give me your son,' he said and, taking him from her lap, he carried him to the upper room where hewas staying and laid him on his bed.	19 ויאמר אליה תני לי את בנך ויקחהו מחיקה ויעלהו אל העליה אשר הוא ישב שם וישכבהו על מטתו
20 He cried out to Yahweh, 'Yahweh my God, by kil ing her son do you mean to bring grief even to thewidow who is looking after me?'	20 ויקרא אל יהוה ויאמר יהוה אלהי הגם על האלמנה אשר אני מתגורר עמה הרעות להמית את בנה
21 He stretched himself on the child three times and cried out to Yahweh, 'Yahweh my God, may thesoul of this child, I beg you, come into him again!'	21 ויתמדד על הילד שלש פעמים ויקרא אל יהוה ויאמר יהוה אלהי תשב נא נפש הילד הזה על קרבו
22 Yahweh heard Elijah's prayer and the child's soul came back into his body and he revived.	22 וישמע יהוה בקול אליהו ותשב נפש הילד על קרבו ויחי
23 Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to hismother. 'Look,' Elijah said, 'your son is alive.'	23 ויקח אליהו את הילד וירדהו מן העליה הביתה ויתנהו לאמו ויאמר אליהו ראי חי בנך
24 And the woman replied, 'Now I know you are a man of God and the word of Yahweh in your mouth istruth itself.'	24 ותאמר האשה אל אליהו עתה זה ידעתי כי איש אלהים אתה ודבר יהוה בפיך אמת
