1 Again, Yahweh's anger was aroused against Israel, and he incited David against them. 'Go,' he said,'take a census of Israel and Judah.'	1 Il furore del Signore s'accese di nuovo contro Israele, ed eccitò David contro di essi, dicendo: «Va a fare il censimento d'Israele e di Giuda ».
2 The king said to Joab and the senior army officers who were with him, 'Now, go through al the tribesof Israel from Dan to Beersheba, and take a census of the people; I wish to know the size of the population.'	2 Allora il re disse a Gioab capo del suo esercito: « Percorri tutte le tribù d'Israele da Dan fino a Bersabee, e fate il censimento del popolo, ond'io ne sappia il numero ».
3 Joab said to the king, 'May Yahweh your God multiply the people a hundred times -- however manythere are -- while my lord the king stil has eyes to see it, but why should my lord the king be set on this?'	3 Gioab rispose al re: « Il Signore Dio tuo moltiplichi il tuo popolo oltre quello che è attualmente, e di nuovo lo moltiplichi per cento nel cospetto del re mio signore; ma che vorrebbe fare il re mio signore con questo? »
4 The king nonetheless enforced his order on Joab and the senior officers, and Joab and the seniorofficers left the king's presence, to take a census of the people of Israel.	4 Ma la parola del re prevalse sulle parole di Gioab e dei capi dell'esefcito, e Gioab e i principi dei soldati partirono dalla presenza del re per fare il censimento del popolo d'Israele.
5 They crossed the Jordan and made a start with Aroer and the town in the middle of the valley, thenmoved on to the Gadites and to Jazer.	5 Passato il Giordano, andarono ad Aroer, alla destra della città che è nella valle di Gad;

8 Having travel ed throughout the country, after nine months and twenty days they returned toJerusalem.	8 Avendo così scorso tutto il paese, tornarono a Gerusalemme dopo nove mesi e venti giorni.
9 Joab gave the king the census results for the people; Israel had eight hundred thousand fighting menwho could wield a sword, and Judah five hundred thousand.	9 Gioab consegnò al re il censimento del popolo che dava d'Israele ottocento mila uomini forti che potevano maneggiar la spada, e di Giuda cinquecento mila combattenti.
10 But afterwards David's heart misgave him for having taken a census of the people. David then said toYahweh, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now, Yahweh, I beg you to forgive your servant for thisfault, for I have acted very foolishly.'	10 Ma David sentì battere il cuore appena fatto il censimento del popolo, e disse al Signore: « Ho molto peccato facendo questo; ma ti prego, o Signore, di togliere l'iniquità del tuo servo, perchè io ho agito con troppa stoltezza ».
11 When, however, David got up next morning, the fol owing message had come from Yahweh to theprophet Gad, David's seer,	11 Il giorno dopo, quando David si levò la mattina, il Signore parlò a Gad profeta e veggente di David, dicendo:
12 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '	12 « Va a dire a David: Queste cose dice il Signore: Ti è dato di scegliere fra queste tre cose, scegline una, quella che ti pare, ed io te la farò ».
13 So Gad went to David and said, 'Which do you prefer: to have three years of famine befal yourcountry; to flee for three months before a pursuing army; or to have three days of epidemic in your country? Nowthink, and decide how I am to answer him who sends me.'	13 Gad si presentò a David e gli riferì la cosa, dicendo: « O deve venire per sette anni la fame nel tuo paese, o per tre mesi tu dovrai fuggire i tuoi nemici che ti inseguiranno, o vi dovrà essere una peste di tre giorni nel tuo regno: or dunque delibera e fammi sapere che devo rispondere a colui che m'ha mandato ».
14 David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive . . . Better to fal into Yahweh's hands, since his merciesare great, than to fal into the hands of men!'	14 David rispose a Gad: « La mia angoscia è grande; ma è meglio cadere nelle mani del Signore, di cui sono grandi le misericordie, che nelle mani degli uomini ».
15 So David chose the epidemic. It was the time of the wheat harvest. So Yahweh unleashed anepidemic on Israel from that morning until the time determined; plague ravaged the people and, of the peoplefrom Dan to Beersheba, seventy thousand died.	15 Il Signore mandò in Israele la peste da quella mattina fino al tempo stabilito, e del popolo, da Dan fino a Bersabee, ne morirono settanta mila persone.
16 But when the angel stretched his hand towards Jerusalem to destroy it, Yahweh felt sorry about thecalamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, 'Enough now! Hold your hand!' The angel ofYahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.	16 Quando l'angelo del Signore stese la mano sopra Gerusalemme per desolarla, il Signore si mosse a pietà per tanta sciagura, e disse all'angelo che percoteva il popolo: « Basta! Ora ferma la tua mano ». L'angelo del Signore era presso l'aia di Areuna Gebuseo.
17 When David saw the angel who was ravaging the people, he said to Yahweh, 'I was the one whosinned. I was the one who acted wrongly. But these, the flock, what have they done? Let your hand lie heavy onme and on my family!'	17 Quando ebbe veduto l'Angelo che percoteva il popolo, David disse al Signore: « Son io che ho peccato, io che ho agito iniquamente: ma questi, che son le pecore, che han fatto? Si rivolga, ti prego, la tua mano contro di me e contro la casa di mio padre ».
18 Gad went to David that day and said, 'Go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing-floor ofAraunah the Jebusite.'	18 In quel giorno Gad andò David e gli disse: « Sali ed erigi un altare al Signore nell'aia di Areuna Gebuseo ».
19 So, at Gad's bidding, David went up, as Yahweh had ordered.	19 David salì secondo la parola di Gad, e l'ordine del Signore.
20 When Araunah looked up and saw the king and his retinue advancing towards him-Araunah wasthreshing the wheat -- Araunah came forward and prostrated himself on the ground at the king's feet.	20 Areuna, avendo alzati gli occhi, visto venire da lui il re e i suoi servi,
21 'Why has my lord the king come to his servant?' Araunah asked. David replied, 'To buy the threshing-floor from you, to build an altar to Yahweh, so that the plague may be lifted from the people.'	21 uscito fuori, adorò il re, prostrandosi col volto a terra, e disse: « Perchè mai il re mio signore viene alla casa del suo servo? » David gli disse: « Per comprar la tua aia ed erigervi un altare al Signore, affinchè cessi la mortalità che infierisce nel popolo ».
22 Araunah said to David, 'Let my lord the king take it and make what offerings he thinks fit. Here arethe oxen for the burnt offering, the threshing-sleds and the oxen's yokes for the wood.	22 Areuna rispose a David: « Il re mio signore prenda e offerisca come a lui piace: ecco i buoi per l'olocausto, il carro ed i gioghi dei buoi per il legno:
23 My lord the king's servant wil give the king everything. And', Araunah said to the king, 'may Yahwehyour God accept what you offer!'	23 tutto, o re, dona Areuna al re ». Poi Areuna aggiunse: « Il Signore Dio tuo gradisca il tuo voto ».
24 'No,' said the king to Araunah, 'I shal give you a price for it; I will not offer Yahweh my God burntofferings which have cost me nothing.' David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.	24 Ma il re rispose e disse: « Non sarà come vorresti tu; no, io vo' comprare da te a contanti, e non voglio offrire al Signore Dio mio olocausti datimi in dono ». David comprò l'aia ed i buoi per cinquanta sicli d'argento.
25 David built an altar to Yahweh and offered burnt offerings and communion sacrifices. Yahweh thentook pity on the country and the plague was lifted from Israel.	25 Poi David eresse in quel luogo un altare al Signore, e offerse olocausti e ostie pacifiche. Così il Signore tornò propizio alla terra e il flagello cessò in Israele.
