1 Again, Yahweh's anger was aroused against Israel, and he incited David against them. 'Go,' he said,'take a census of Israel and Judah.'	1 L'ira del Signore si accese ancora una volta contro Israele e incitò Davide contro di esso, così: "Va' a fare il censimento d'Israele e di Giuda".
2 The king said to Joab and the senior army officers who were with him, 'Now, go through al the tribesof Israel from Dan to Beersheba, and take a census of the people; I wish to know the size of the population.'	2 Il re disse a Ioab, capo dell'esercito che era con lui: "Su, fa' un giro in tutte le tribù d'Israele, da Dan fino a Bersabea, e fate la rassegna del popolo, perché io conosca il numero del popolo".
3 Joab said to the king, 'May Yahweh your God multiply the people a hundred times -- however manythere are -- while my lord the king stil has eyes to see it, but why should my lord the king be set on this?'	3 Ioab rispose al re: "Il Signore, tuo Dio, aggiunga al popolo cento volte altrettanto; e gli occhi del re, mio signore, lo possano vedere. Ma il re, mio signore, perché desidera questo?".
4 The king nonetheless enforced his order on Joab and the senior officers, and Joab and the seniorofficers left the king's presence, to take a census of the people of Israel.	4 Prevalse però l'ordine del re su Ioab e sui capi dell'esercito. Allora Ioab e i capi dell'esercito lasciarono il re per andare a recensire la popolazione d'Israele.
5 They crossed the Jordan and made a start with Aroer and the town in the middle of the valley, thenmoved on to the Gadites and to Jazer.	5 Attraversarono il Giordano e, incominciando da Aroer e dalla città che è nel mezzo della valle di Gad, andarono verso Iazer.
6 They then went to Gilead and the territory of the Hittites, to Kadesh; they then went to Dan and fromDan cut across to Sidon.	6 Proseguirono in Gàlaad e verso la terra degli Hittiti, a Kades; poi passarono a Dan, e di lì verso Sidone.
7 They then went to the fortress of Tyre and to al the towns of the Hittites and Canaanites ending up inthe Negeb of Judah at Beersheba.	7 Giunsero alla fortezza di Tiro e in tutte le città degli Evei e dei Cananei, e finirono nel Negheb di Giuda a Bersabea.
8 Having travel ed throughout the country, after nine months and twenty days they returned toJerusalem.	8 Percorso tutto il paese, rientrarono a Gerusalemme in capo a nove mesi e venti giorni.
9 Joab gave the king the census results for the people; Israel had eight hundred thousand fighting menwho could wield a sword, and Judah five hundred thousand.	9 Ioab consegnò al re il numero totale del censimento del popolo: Israele contava ottocentomila uomini validi a maneggiare la spada; gli uomini di Giuda erano cinquecentomila.
10 But afterwards David's heart misgave him for having taken a census of the people. David then said toYahweh, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now, Yahweh, I beg you to forgive your servant for thisfault, for I have acted very foolishly.'	10 Ma dopo aver censito il popolo Davide ebbe un rimorso nel cuore. Allora Davide disse al Signore: "Ho peccato gravemente per quello che ho fatto! Ma ora, Signore, togli il peccato del tuo servo, perché ho agito molto stoltamente!".
11 When, however, David got up next morning, the fol owing message had come from Yahweh to theprophet Gad, David's seer,	11 Quando al mattino Davide si alzò, la parola del Signore era stata rivolta al profeta Gad, veggente di Davide, in questi termini:
12 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '	12 "Va' a parlare a Davide: Così dice il Signore: "Tre cose io ti propongo; scegliti una di esse e io te la farò".
13 So Gad went to David and said, 'Which do you prefer: to have three years of famine befal yourcountry; to flee for three months before a pursuing army; or to have three days of epidemic in your country? Nowthink, and decide how I am to answer him who sends me.'	13 Gad entrò da Davide e l'informò dicendogli: "Vuoi che vengano per te sette anni di fame nel tuo paese, o tre mesi di fuga davanti al tuo avversario mentre lui t'inseguirà, o tre giorni di peste nel tuo paese? Ora rifletti e vedi quello che devo rispondere a colui che per me manda il messaggio".
14 David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive . . . Better to fal into Yahweh's hands, since his merciesare great, than to fal into the hands of men!'	14 Davide rispose a Gad: "Mi trovo in grande angustia! Cadiamo pure in mano del Signore, perché la sua misericordia è grande, ma che io non cada nelle mani degli uomini".
15 So David chose the epidemic. It was the time of the wheat harvest. So Yahweh unleashed anepidemic on Israel from that morning until the time determined; plague ravaged the people and, of the peoplefrom Dan to Beersheba, seventy thousand died.	15 Davide scelse la peste. Era il tempo della mietitura dell'orzo. Il Signore mandò la peste in Israele, da quella mattina fino al tempo fissato. Morirono tra il popolo, da Dan fino a Bersabea, settantamila uomini.
16 But when the angel stretched his hand towards Jerusalem to destroy it, Yahweh felt sorry about thecalamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, 'Enough now! Hold your hand!' The angel ofYahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.	16 L'angelo stese la sua mano verso Gerusalemme per devastarla; ma il Signore si mosse a pietà per il male e disse all'angelo che faceva strage tra il popolo: "Basta! Ora ritira la tua mano!". L'angelo del Signore si trovava presso l'aia di Araunà, il gebuseo.
17 When David saw the angel who was ravaging the people, he said to Yahweh, 'I was the one whosinned. I was the one who acted wrongly. But these, the flock, what have they done? Let your hand lie heavy onme and on my family!'	17 Quando Davide vide l'angelo che colpiva il popolo, disse al Signore: "Ecco, io ho peccato, io ho commesso il male, ma loro che sono il gregge, che cosa hanno fatto? La tua mano sia contro di me e contro la casa di mio padre!".
18 Gad went to David that day and said, 'Go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing-floor ofAraunah the Jebusite.'	18 Quel giorno Gad andò da Davide e gli disse: "Sali e innalza un altare al Signore nell'aia di Araunà, il gebuseo".
19 So, at Gad's bidding, David went up, as Yahweh had ordered.	19 Davide vi salì secondo la parola di Gad, come aveva ordinato il Signore.
20 When Araunah looked up and saw the king and his retinue advancing towards him-Araunah wasthreshing the wheat -- Araunah came forward and prostrated himself on the ground at the king's feet.	20 Araunà si affacciò e vide il re e i suoi cortigiani che si dirigevano da lui; allora Araunà uscì e si prostrò davanti al re con la faccia a terra.
21 'Why has my lord the king come to his servant?' Araunah asked. David replied, 'To buy the threshing-floor from you, to build an altar to Yahweh, so that the plague may be lifted from the people.'	21 Araunà disse: "Perché il re, mio signore, è venuto dal suo servo?". Davide rispose: "Per comperare da te l'aia per costruire un altare al Signore, così il flagello sarà allontanato dal popolo".
22 Araunah said to David, 'Let my lord the king take it and make what offerings he thinks fit. Here arethe oxen for the burnt offering, the threshing-sleds and the oxen's yokes for the wood.	22 Araunà rispose a Davide: "Il re, mio signore, prenda pure e offra quello che sembra bene ai suoi occhi: ecco i buoi per il sacrificio, le tregge e gli strumenti dei buoi per legna.
23 My lord the king's servant wil give the king everything. And', Araunah said to the king, 'may Yahwehyour God accept what you offer!'	23 O re, Araunà cede tutto quanto al re". Aggiunse Araunà al re: "Che il Signore, tuo Dio, ti sia propizio!".
24 'No,' said the king to Araunah, 'I shal give you a price for it; I will not offer Yahweh my God burntofferings which have cost me nothing.' David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.	24 Il re disse ad Araunà: "No; io voglio comperare tutto questo per il loro prezzo; non voglio offrire al Signore, mio Dio, olocausti che non mi costino nulla". Così Davide comperò l'aia e i buoi per cinquanta sicli d'argento.
25 David built an altar to Yahweh and offered burnt offerings and communion sacrifices. Yahweh thentook pity on the country and the plague was lifted from Israel.	25 Davide costruì in quel luogo un altare al Signore e offrì olocausti e sacrifici pacifici. Allora il Signore ebbe pietà del paese e il flagello fu stornato da Israele.
