1 Again, Yahweh's anger was aroused against Israel, and he incited David against them. 'Go,' he said,'take a census of Israel and Judah.'	1 De nouveau la colère de Yahvé s’enflamma contre Israël, il poussa David à faire leur malheur. “Va, dit-il, et fais le recensement d’Israël et de Juda.”
2 The king said to Joab and the senior army officers who were with him, 'Now, go through al the tribesof Israel from Dan to Beersheba, and take a census of the people; I wish to know the size of the population.'	2 Le roi dit à Joab, chef de l’armée, qui était avec lui: “Parcours toutes les tribus d’Israël depuis Dan jusqu’à Bersabée. Dénombre le peuple, ainsi je saurai combien ils sont.”
3 Joab said to the king, 'May Yahweh your God multiply the people a hundred times -- however manythere are -- while my lord the king stil has eyes to see it, but why should my lord the king be set on this?'	3 Joab dit au roi: “Que Yahvé ton Dieu multiplie 100 fois le peuple, et que les yeux de mon seigneur le roi le voient. Mais pourquoi mon seigneur le roi désire-t-il une chose semblable?”
4 The king nonetheless enforced his order on Joab and the senior officers, and Joab and the seniorofficers left the king's presence, to take a census of the people of Israel.	4 Cependant la parole du roi était un ordre pour Joab et les chefs de l’armée: il sortit de chez le roi avec les chefs de l’armée pour aller recenser la population d’Israël.
5 They crossed the Jordan and made a start with Aroer and the town in the middle of the valley, thenmoved on to the Gadites and to Jazer.	5 Ils traversèrent le Jourdain et campèrent au sud d’Aroër; la ville est au milieu du Torrent de Gad. Ils continuèrent ensuite vers Yazer,
6 They then went to Gilead and the territory of the Hittites, to Kadesh; they then went to Dan and fromDan cut across to Sidon.	6 puis ils arrivèrent en Galaad, au pays des Hittites, à Qadesh et de là à Dan. Ils parcoururent les environs en direction de Sidon,
7 They then went to the fortress of Tyre and to al the towns of the Hittites and Canaanites ending up inthe Negeb of Judah at Beersheba.	7 ils arrivèrent à la forteresse de Tyr et traversèrent les villes des Hivvites et des Cananéens. Puis ils repartirent vers Bersabée, dans le Négueb de Juda.
8 Having travel ed throughout the country, after nine months and twenty days they returned toJerusalem.	8 Ils parcoururent donc tout le pays et revinrent à Jérusalem au bout de 9 mois et 20 jours.
9 Joab gave the king the census results for the people; Israel had eight hundred thousand fighting menwho could wield a sword, and Judah five hundred thousand.	9 Joab remit au roi le compte exact de la population: Israël comptait 800 000 hommes de guerre capables de manier l’épée, et Juda 500 000.
10 But afterwards David's heart misgave him for having taken a census of the people. David then said toYahweh, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now, Yahweh, I beg you to forgive your servant for thisfault, for I have acted very foolishly.'	10 Mais ensuite le cœur de David lui battit: il avait recensé le peuple! Il dit à Yahvé: “J’ai commis un très grand péché. Maintenant, Yahvé, pardonne la faute de ton serviteur: j’ai agi comme un insensé.”
11 When, however, David got up next morning, the fol owing message had come from Yahweh to theprophet Gad, David's seer,	11 Le lendemain, tandis que David se levait, la parole de Yahvé fut adressée au prophète Gad, le voyant de David:
12 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '	12 “Va transmettre à David cette parole de Yahvé: Je te propose trois choses, choisis l’une d’entre elle et je la réaliserai.”
13 So Gad went to David and said, 'Which do you prefer: to have three years of famine befal yourcountry; to flee for three months before a pursuing army; or to have three days of epidemic in your country? Nowthink, and decide how I am to answer him who sends me.'	13 Gad se rendit auprès de David et lui dit: “Que choisiras-tu: trois années de famine dans ton pays, trois mois de fuite devant un ennemi qui te poursuivra, ou trois jours de peste dans ton pays? À toi de réfléchir, tu me diras quelle réponse je dois porter à celui qui m’envoie.”
14 David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive . . . Better to fal into Yahweh's hands, since his merciesare great, than to fal into the hands of men!'	14 David dit à Gad: “Me voilà dans une grande détresse, mais mieux vaut pour nous tomber entre les mains de Yahvé, car il est riche en miséricorde, plutôt que de tomber entre les mains des hommes.”
15 So David chose the epidemic. It was the time of the wheat harvest. So Yahweh unleashed anepidemic on Israel from that morning until the time determined; plague ravaged the people and, of the peoplefrom Dan to Beersheba, seventy thousand died.	15 David choisit donc la peste. C’était le temps de la moisson des blés, et Yahvé envoya la peste en Israël depuis ce matin-là jusqu’au temps fixé. Le fléau s’abattit sur le peuple et 70 000 hommes en moururent depuis Dan jusqu’à Bersabée.
16 But when the angel stretched his hand towards Jerusalem to destroy it, Yahweh felt sorry about thecalamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, 'Enough now! Hold your hand!' The angel ofYahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.	16 L’ange exterminateur étendit sa main vers Jérusalem, mais Yahvé se repentit du mal et il dit à l’ange exterminateur: “Arrête! Retire ta main!” L’ange de Yahvé se tenait à ce moment auprès de l’aire d’Arauna le Jébusite.
17 When David saw the angel who was ravaging the people, he said to Yahweh, 'I was the one whosinned. I was the one who acted wrongly. But these, the flock, what have they done? Let your hand lie heavy onme and on my family!'	17 Lorsqu’il vit l’ange qui frappait la population, David se tourna vers Yahvé et lui dit: “J’ai péché, c’est moi qui ai commis cette grande faute, mais eux le troupeau, qu’ont-ils fait? Que ta main ne s’en prenne qu’à moi et à la maison de mon père.”
18 Gad went to David that day and said, 'Go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing-floor ofAraunah the Jebusite.'	18 Ce jour-là le prophète Gad se rendit auprès de David et lui dit: “Monte et construis un autel à Yahvé sur l’aire d’Arauna le Jébusite.”
19 So, at Gad's bidding, David went up, as Yahweh had ordered.	19 David monta donc suivant la parole de Gad, comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné.
20 When Araunah looked up and saw the king and his retinue advancing towards him-Araunah wasthreshing the wheat -- Araunah came forward and prostrated himself on the ground at the king's feet.	20 Or Arauna regardait: il vit le roi et ses serviteurs qui s’avançaient vers lui. Arauna sortit et se prosterna la face contre terre devant le roi,
21 'Why has my lord the king come to his servant?' Araunah asked. David replied, 'To buy the threshing-floor from you, to build an altar to Yahweh, so that the plague may be lifted from the people.'	21 puis il demanda: “Pourquoi mon seigneur le roi est-il venu chez son serviteur?” David répondit: “Je viens pour acheter l’aire afin d’y construire un autel à Yahvé, ainsi le fléau cessera de frapper le peuple.”
22 Araunah said to David, 'Let my lord the king take it and make what offerings he thinks fit. Here arethe oxen for the burnt offering, the threshing-sleds and the oxen's yokes for the wood.	22 Arauna dit alors à David: “Que mon seigneur le roi prenne et offre tout ce qui lui semblera bon. Voici les bœufs pour l’holocauste, le traîneau et les jougs des bœufs fourniront le bois.
23 My lord the king's servant wil give the king everything. And', Araunah said to the king, 'may Yahwehyour God accept what you offer!'	23 Tout cela, mon seigneur, Arauna le donne au roi.” Arauna dit encore: “Que Yahvé ton Dieu accepte ton sacrifice.”
24 'No,' said the king to Araunah, 'I shal give you a price for it; I will not offer Yahweh my God burntofferings which have cost me nothing.' David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.	24 Mais le roi répondit à Arauna: “Non, je veux te le payer à son juste prix, je ne veux pas offrir à Yahvé mon Dieu des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien.” David acheta donc l’aire et les bœufs pour 50 sicles d’argent.
25 David built an altar to Yahweh and offered burnt offerings and communion sacrifices. Yahweh thentook pity on the country and the plague was lifted from Israel.	25 David construisit là un autel à Yahvé et il y offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion. Alors Yahvé eut pitié du pays et la peste s’écarta d’Israël.
