1 Again, Yahweh's anger was aroused against Israel, and he incited David against them. 'Go,' he said,'take a census of Israel and Judah.'	1 - Ancora una volta il furore del Signore s'accese contro Israele ed eccitò Davide contro di esso, quando egli disse: «Va' a fare il computo d'Israele e di Giuda».
2 The king said to Joab and the senior army officers who were with him, 'Now, go through al the tribesof Israel from Dan to Beersheba, and take a census of the people; I wish to know the size of the population.'	2 Disse adunque il re a Joab capo dell'esercito: «Va' in giro per tutte le tribù d'Israele, da Dan fino a Bersabee, e conta il popolo perchè io ne sappia il numero».
3 Joab said to the king, 'May Yahweh your God multiply the people a hundred times -- however manythere are -- while my lord the king stil has eyes to see it, but why should my lord the king be set on this?'	3 Disse Joab al re: «Il Signore Dio tuo accresca il popolo tuo più di quanto è al presente, e ancora lo centuplichi agli occhi del re mio signore; ma che cosa vuol fare il re mio signore con tal cosa?».
4 The king nonetheless enforced his order on Joab and the senior officers, and Joab and the seniorofficers left the king's presence, to take a census of the people of Israel.	4 Ma la parola del re la vinse contro le parole di Joab e dei principi dell'esercito, e Joab coi capi dell'armata se n'andò dal cospetto del re per numerare il popolo d'Israele.
5 They crossed the Jordan and made a start with Aroer and the town in the middle of the valley, thenmoved on to the Gadites and to Jazer.	5 Passato il Giordano vennero ad Aroer a destra della città che sta nella valle di Gad,
6 They then went to Gilead and the territory of the Hittites, to Kadesh; they then went to Dan and fromDan cut across to Sidon.	6 e per Jazer passarono in Galaad e nella terra inferiore di Odsi e vennero fino alle boscaglie di Dan, e girando attorno a Sidone
7 They then went to the fortress of Tyre and to al the towns of the Hittites and Canaanites ending up inthe Negeb of Judah at Beersheba.	7 passarono presso le mura di Tiro, attraversarono il paese degli Evei e dei Cananei e giunsero al mezzogiorno di Giuda a Bersabee.
8 Having travel ed throughout the country, after nine months and twenty days they returned toJerusalem.	8 E percorsa tutta la contrada, furono di ritorno a Gerusalemme dopo nove mesi e venti giorni.
9 Joab gave the king the census results for the people; Israel had eight hundred thousand fighting menwho could wield a sword, and Judah five hundred thousand.	9 Joab diede il numero del censimento del popolo al re, e si trovò che Israele aveva ottocentomila uomini validi, che sapevano maneggiar la spada, mentre Giuda aveva cinquecentomila combattenti.
10 But afterwards David's heart misgave him for having taken a census of the people. David then said toYahweh, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now, Yahweh, I beg you to forgive your servant for thisfault, for I have acted very foolishly.'	10 Ma il cuore di Davide sentì rimorso dopo che ebbe fatto il computo del popolo e disse Davide al Signore: «Ho fatto un grande peccato con ciò; ma ti prego, o Signore, di perdonare l'iniquità del tuo servo, poichè ho agito troppo da stolto».
11 When, however, David got up next morning, the fol owing message had come from Yahweh to theprophet Gad, David's seer,	11 Si levò Davide l'indomani e la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Gad, profeta e veggente di Davide, in questa forma:
12 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '	12 «Vai a dire a Davide: - Così parla il Signore: " Ti è data la scelta di tre castighi; scegli dei tre quello che tu vorrai e io te lo infliggerò " -».
13 So Gad went to David and said, 'Which do you prefer: to have three years of famine befal yourcountry; to flee for three months before a pursuing army; or to have three days of epidemic in your country? Nowthink, and decide how I am to answer him who sends me.'	13 Gad, venuto a Davide, gli diede l'annunzio così: «O per sette anni verrà la fame nel tuo paese, o per tre mesi fuggirai i tuoi avversari, ed essi ti perseguiteranno, oppure per tre giorni vi sarà gran pestilenza nel tuo regno. Or dunque scegli e vedi ciò che io debbo rispondere a chi mi ha mandato».
14 David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive . . . Better to fal into Yahweh's hands, since his merciesare great, than to fal into the hands of men!'	14 Disse allora Davide a Gad: «Io sono in una grande angustia, ma è meglio cadere nelle mani del Signore (le cui misericordie sono molte) che in quelle degli uomini».
15 So David chose the epidemic. It was the time of the wheat harvest. So Yahweh unleashed anepidemic on Israel from that morning until the time determined; plague ravaged the people and, of the peoplefrom Dan to Beersheba, seventy thousand died.	15 Allora il Signore mandò la pestilenza in Israele dal mattino fino al tempo stabilito; e da Dan fino a Bersabee morirono del popolo settantamila uomini.
16 But when the angel stretched his hand towards Jerusalem to destroy it, Yahweh felt sorry about thecalamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, 'Enough now! Hold your hand!' The angel ofYahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.	16 Mentre l'angelo del Signore stendeva la sua mano sopra Gerusalemme per disperderla, il Signore ebbe pietà di tanta sciagura e disse all'angelo che percuoteva il popolo: «Basta. Trattieni ora la tua mano». Se ne stava l'angelo del Signore presso l'aia di Areuna il Jebuseo,
17 When David saw the angel who was ravaging the people, he said to Yahweh, 'I was the one whosinned. I was the one who acted wrongly. But these, the flock, what have they done? Let your hand lie heavy onme and on my family!'	17 quando Davide, visto l'angelo in atto di percuotere il popolo, disse al Signore: «Son io che ho peccato, io che agii iniquamente; costoro che sono il mio gregge che male fecero? Si volti, te ne prego, la tua mano contro di me e contro la casa del padre mio».
18 Gad went to David that day and said, 'Go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing-floor ofAraunah the Jebusite.'	18 In quel giorno venne però Gad a Davide e gli disse: «Ascendi ed erigi un altare al Signore sull'aia di Areuna il Jebuseo».
19 So, at Gad's bidding, David went up, as Yahweh had ordered.	19 E Davide salì come gli avea detto Gad per ordine del Signore.
20 When Araunah looked up and saw the king and his retinue advancing towards him-Araunah wasthreshing the wheat -- Araunah came forward and prostrated himself on the ground at the king's feet.	20 Areuna, alzando gli occhi, vide il re e i servi di lui venire alla sua volta
21 'Why has my lord the king come to his servant?' Araunah asked. David replied, 'To buy the threshing-floor from you, to build an altar to Yahweh, so that the plague may be lifted from the people.'	21 e uscito adorò il re colla faccia a terra e disse: «Per qual cagione il re mio signore viene al suo servo?». E Davide rispose: «Per comperare da te l'aia ed edificarvi un altare al Signore affinchè cessi la mortalità che infierisce in mezzo al popolo».
22 Araunah said to David, 'Let my lord the king take it and make what offerings he thinks fit. Here arethe oxen for the burnt offering, the threshing-sleds and the oxen's yokes for the wood.	22 Disse allora Areuna a Davide: «Se la prenda il re mio signore e offra come meglio gli piace. Hai qui i buoi per l'olocausto, il carro e i gioghi per servire da legna».
23 My lord the king's servant wil give the king everything. And', Araunah said to the king, 'may Yahwehyour God accept what you offer!'	23 Tutto diede Areuna al re. Soggiunse quindi Areuna al re: «Il Signore Dio tuo gradisca il tuo voto».
24 'No,' said the king to Araunah, 'I shal give you a price for it; I will not offer Yahweh my God burntofferings which have cost me nothing.' David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.	24 Il re gli rispose: «Non come tu vuoi, ma comprerò a pagamento e non offrirò al Signore Dio mio olocausti che non costano nulla». Davide adunque comperò l'aia e i buoi al prezzo di cinquanta sicli d'argento,
25 David built an altar to Yahweh and offered burnt offerings and communion sacrifices. Yahweh thentook pity on the country and the plague was lifted from Israel.	25 ed edificò colà un altare al Signore e offrì olocausti e ostie pacifiche. Così il Signore si placò verso il paese, e il flagello ebbe termine in Israele.
