1 Again, Yahweh's anger was aroused against Israel, and he incited David against them. 'Go,' he said,'take a census of Israel and Judah.'	1 Ma si accese di bel nuovo il furor del Signore contro Israele, e Davidde in loro danno si mosse a dar ordini, che si facesse il registro della gente d’Israele e di Giuda.
2 The king said to Joab and the senior army officers who were with him, 'Now, go through al the tribesof Israel from Dan to Beersheba, and take a census of the people; I wish to know the size of the population.'	2 Il re adunque disse a Gioab capo del suo esercito: Va attorno per tutte le tribù d'Israele da Dan fino a Bersabea, e fa registro del popolo, ond'io ne sappia il numero.
3 Joab said to the king, 'May Yahweh your God multiply the people a hundred times -- however manythere are -- while my lord the king stil has eyes to see it, but why should my lord the king be set on this?'	3 E Gioab rispose al re; II Signore Dio tuo moltiplichi il tuo popolo al doppio di quello che è, e anche a cento volte più sotto gli occhi del re mio signore; ma che pretende il re mio signore in facendo tal cosa?
4 The king nonetheless enforced his order on Joab and the senior officers, and Joab and the seniorofficers left the king's presence, to take a census of the people of Israel.	4 Ma la parola del re la vinse contro il dire di Gioab, e de' capi dell'esercito, e Gioab, e i principi de' soldati partirono dalla presenza del re per andare a far il conto del popolo d'Israele.
5 They crossed the Jordan and made a start with Aroer and the town in the middle of the valley, thenmoved on to the Gadites and to Jazer.	5 E passato che ebbero il Giordano, arrivarono ad Aroer dal lato destro della città che è nella valle di Gad:
6 They then went to Gilead and the territory of the Hittites, to Kadesh; they then went to Dan and fromDan cut across to Sidon.	6 E passati per Jazer entrarono in Galaad, e nel paese inferiore di Hodsi giunsero fino alle boscaglie di Dan, e girando attorno a Sidone,
7 They then went to the fortress of Tyre and to al the towns of the Hittites and Canaanites ending up inthe Negeb of Judah at Beersheba.	7 Passarono presso le mura di Tiro, e per tutto il paese degli Hevei, e dei Cananei, e arrivarono a Bersabea dalla parte meridionale di Giuda:
8 Having travel ed throughout the country, after nine months and twenty days they returned toJerusalem.	8 E avendo scorso tutto il paese, tornarono a Gerusalemme dopo nove mesi, e venti giorni.
9 Joab gave the king the census results for the people; Israel had eight hundred thousand fighting menwho could wield a sword, and Judah five hundred thousand.	9 E Gioab diede al re il computo del registro del popolo, e si trovarono d'Israele ottocento mila uomini fatti, e buoni per la guerra: e di Giuda cinquecento mila combattenti.
10 But afterwards David's heart misgave him for having taken a census of the people. David then said toYahweh, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now, Yahweh, I beg you to forgive your servant for thisfault, for I have acted very foolishly.'	10 Ma Davidde provò al cuore un rimorso dopo che fu fatto il computo del popolo, e David disse al Signore: Io ho peccato assai in questo fatto; ma ti prego, o Signore, a condonare questo peccato al tuo servo; perocché io ho operato con troppa stoltezza.
11 When, however, David got up next morning, the fol owing message had come from Yahweh to theprophet Gad, David's seer,	11 E alzato che fu Davidde la mattina, il Signore parlò a Gad Profeta, e Veggente di Davidde, e gli disse:
12 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '	12 Va a dire a Davidde: Queste cose dice il Signore: Ti vien data la scelta di tre cose; eleggi una di queste, quella che tu vorrai, che io ti mandi.
13 So Gad went to David and said, 'Which do you prefer: to have three years of famine befal yourcountry; to flee for three months before a pursuing army; or to have three days of epidemic in your country? Nowthink, and decide how I am to answer him who sends me.'	13 E Gad essendosi presentato a Davidde, recò a lui questa nuova, e disse: O per sette anni sarà la fame nel tuo paese: o per tre mesi fuggirai i tuoi nemici, e quelli t'inseguiranno, o almeno per tre dì sarà pestilenza nel tuo reame. Or tu adunque consulta, e vedi qual risposta io abbia da dare a lui, che mi ha mandato.
14 David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive . . . Better to fal into Yahweh's hands, since his merciesare great, than to fal into the hands of men!'	14 E Davidde disse a Gad: Sono in grandi strettezze; ma è meglio che io cada nelle mani del Signore, (di cui grandi son le misericordie) che nelle mani degli uomini.
15 So David chose the epidemic. It was the time of the wheat harvest. So Yahweh unleashed anepidemic on Israel from that morning until the time determined; plague ravaged the people and, of the peoplefrom Dan to Beersheba, seventy thousand died.	15 E il Signore mandò la peste in Israele da quella mattina fino al tempo stabilito; e morirono del popolo da Dan fino a Bersabea, settanta mila persone.
16 But when the angel stretched his hand towards Jerusalem to destroy it, Yahweh felt sorry about thecalamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, 'Enough now! Hold your hand!' The angel ofYahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.	16 E mentre l'Angelo del Signore stendea la sua mano sopra Gerusalemme per desolarla, il Signore ebbe pietà di tanta sciagura, e disse all'Angelo sterminatore del popolo: Basta: ritieni adesso la tua mano. Or l'Angelo del Signore stava presso l’aja di Areuna Jebuseo.
17 When David saw the angel who was ravaging the people, he said to Yahweh, 'I was the one whosinned. I was the one who acted wrongly. But these, the flock, what have they done? Let your hand lie heavy onme and on my family!'	17 E Davidde, quando ebbe veduto l'Angelo, che percuoteva il popolo, disse al Signore: Io son quegli, che ho peccato, io che ho operato iniquamente: che hann'eglino fatto costoro, che son le pecore? Contro di me, ti prego, rivolgasi la tua mano, e contro la casa del padre mio.
18 Gad went to David that day and said, 'Go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing-floor ofAraunah the Jebusite.'	18 E Gad andò quel giorno a trovare Davidde, e gli disse: Va, ed ergi un altare al Signore nell'aia di Areuna Jebuseo.
19 So, at Gad's bidding, David went up, as Yahweh had ordered.	19 E andò Davidde secondo la parola dettagli da Gad per ordine del Signore.
20 When Araunah looked up and saw the king and his retinue advancing towards him-Araunah wasthreshing the wheat -- Araunah came forward and prostrated himself on the ground at the king's feet.	20 E Areuna alzando gli occhi vide, che il re co' suoi servi andavano verso di lui:
21 'Why has my lord the king come to his servant?' Araunah asked. David replied, 'To buy the threshing-floor from you, to build an altar to Yahweh, so that the plague may be lifted from the people.'	21 E andogli incontro, e lo adorò prostrandosi per terra, e disse: Qual è la ragione, per cui il re mio Signore viene a casa del suo servo? E David gli disse: Per comprar la tua aia, ed ergervi un aliare al Signore, affinchè cessi la mortalità, che infierisce contro del popolo.
22 Araunah said to David, 'Let my lord the king take it and make what offerings he thinks fit. Here arethe oxen for the burnt offering, the threshing-sleds and the oxen's yokes for the wood.	22 E Areuna disse a, Davidde: Se la prenda il re mio signore, e la consacri come a lui piace: eccoti i bovi pell’olocausto, e il carro, e il giogo de' buoi, che serviranno per legna (da fuoco).
23 My lord the king's servant wil give the king everything. And', Araunah said to the king, 'may Yahwehyour God accept what you offer!'	23 Tutto diede il re Areuna al re: e soggiunse Areuna al re: II Signore Dio tuo gradisca il tuo voto.
24 'No,' said the king to Araunah, 'I shal give you a price for it; I will not offer Yahweh my God burntofferings which have cost me nothing.' David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.	24 E il re rispose, e disse: Non andrà la cosa, come vuoi tu, ma io ne pagherò a te il prezzo, e non offerirò al Signore Dio mio olocausto &mi- in dono. Davidde adunque comprò l’aia, e i bovi per cinquanta sicli d’argento.
25 David built an altar to Yahweh and offered burnt offerings and communion sacrifices. Yahweh thentook pity on the country and the plague was lifted from Israel.	25 E Davidde eresse in quel luogo un altare al Signore, e offerse olocausti, e ostie pacifiche: e il Signore si placò verso il paese, e fu posto fine alla mortalità, che straziava Israele.
