NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Again, Yahweh's anger was aroused against Israel, and he incited David against them. 'Go,' he said,'take a census of Israel and Judah.'	1 La colère de Yahvé s'enflamma encore contre les Israélites et il excita David contre eux: "Va, dit-il, fais le dénombrement d'Israël et de Juda."
2 The king said to Joab and the senior army officers who were with him, 'Now, go through al the tribesof Israel from Dan to Beersheba, and take a census of the people; I wish to know the size of the population.'	2 Le roi dit à Joab et aux chefs de l'armée qui étaient avec lui: "Parcourez donc toutes les tribusd'Israël, de Dan à Bersabée, et faites le recensement du peuple afin que je sache le chiffre de la population."
3 Joab said to the king, 'May Yahweh your God multiply the people a hundred times -- however manythere are -- while my lord the king stil has eyes to see it, but why should my lord the king be set on this?'	3 Joab répondit au roi: "Que Yahvé ton Dieu accroisse le peuple de cent fois autant, pendant queMonseigneur le roi peut le voir de ses yeux, mais pourquoi Monseigneur le roi aurait-il ce désir?"
4 The king nonetheless enforced his order on Joab and the senior officers, and Joab and the seniorofficers left the king's presence, to take a census of the people of Israel.	4 Cependant l'ordre du roi s'imposa à Joab et aux chefs de l'armée, et Joab et les chefs de l'arméequittèrent la présence du roi pour recenser le peuple d'Israël.
5 They crossed the Jordan and made a start with Aroer and the town in the middle of the valley, thenmoved on to the Gadites and to Jazer.	5 Ils passèrent le Jourdain et commencèrent par Aroër et la ville qui est au milieu de la vallée,allèrent chez les Gadites et vers Yazèr.
6 They then went to Gilead and the territory of the Hittites, to Kadesh; they then went to Dan and fromDan cut across to Sidon.	6 Puis ils allèrent en Galaad et au pays des Hivvites, à Qadesh, ils se rendirent à Dan et de Dan ilsobliquèrent vers Sidon.
7 They then went to the fortress of Tyre and to al the towns of the Hittites and Canaanites ending up inthe Negeb of Judah at Beersheba.	7 Puis ils atteignirent la forteresse de Tyr et toutes les villes des Hittites et des Cananéens etaboutirent au Négeb de Juda, à Bersabée.
8 Having travel ed throughout the country, after nine months and twenty days they returned toJerusalem.	8 Ayant parcouru tout le pays, ils rentrèrent à Jérusalem au bout de neuf mois et vingt jours.
9 Joab gave the king the census results for the people; Israel had eight hundred thousand fighting menwho could wield a sword, and Judah five hundred thousand.	9 Joab donna au roi le chiffre obtenu pour le recensement du peuple: Israël comptait 800.000hommes d'armes tirant l'épée, et Juda 500.000 hommes.
10 But afterwards David's heart misgave him for having taken a census of the people. David then said toYahweh, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now, Yahweh, I beg you to forgive your servant for thisfault, for I have acted very foolishly.'	10 Après cela le coeur de David lui battit d'avoir recensé le peuple et David dit à Yahvé: "C'est ungrand péché que j'ai commis! Maintenant, Yahvé, veuille pardonner cette faute à ton serviteur, car j'ai commisune grande folie."
11 When, however, David got up next morning, the fol owing message had come from Yahweh to theprophet Gad, David's seer,	11 Quand David se leva le lendemain matin -- cette parole de Yahvé avait été adressée au prophèteGad, le voyant de David:
12 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '	12 "Va dire à David: Ainsi parle Yahvé. Je te propose trois choses, choisis-en une et je l'exécuteraipour toi" --
13 So Gad went to David and said, 'Which do you prefer: to have three years of famine befal yourcountry; to flee for three months before a pursuing army; or to have three days of epidemic in your country? Nowthink, and decide how I am to answer him who sends me.'	13 Donc Gad se rendit chez David et lui notifia ceci: "Faut-il que t'adviennent trois années defamine dans ton pays, ou que tu fuies pendant trois mois devant ton ennemi qui te poursuivra, ou qu'il y aitpendant trois jours la peste dans ton pays? Maintenant réfléchis et vois ce que je dois répondre à celui quim'envoie!"
14 David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive . . . Better to fal into Yahweh's hands, since his merciesare great, than to fal into the hands of men!'	14 David dit à Gad: "Je suis dans une grande anxiété... Ah! tombons entre les mains de Yahvé carsa miséricorde est grande, mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes!"
15 So David chose the epidemic. It was the time of the wheat harvest. So Yahweh unleashed anepidemic on Israel from that morning until the time determined; plague ravaged the people and, of the peoplefrom Dan to Beersheba, seventy thousand died.	15 David choisit donc la peste. C'était le temps de la moisson des blés. Yahvé envoya la peste enIsraël depuis le matin jusqu'au temps fixé, le fléau frappa le peuple et 70.000 hommes du peuple moururentdepuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée.
16 But when the angel stretched his hand towards Jerusalem to destroy it, Yahweh felt sorry about thecalamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, 'Enough now! Hold your hand!' The angel ofYahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.	16 L'ange étendit sa main vers Jérusalem pour l'exterminer, mais Yahvé se repentit de ce mal et ildit à l'ange qui exterminait le peuple: "Assez! retire à présent ta main." L'ange de Yahvé se trouvait près de l'aired'Arauna le Jébuséen.
17 When David saw the angel who was ravaging the people, he said to Yahweh, 'I was the one whosinned. I was the one who acted wrongly. But these, the flock, what have they done? Let your hand lie heavy onme and on my family!'	17 Quand David vit l'ange qui frappait le peuple, il dit à Yahvé: "C'est moi qui ai péché, c'est moiqui ai commis le mal, mais ceux-là, c'est le troupeau, qu'ont-ils fait? Que ta main s'appesantisse donc sur moi etsur ma famille!"
18 Gad went to David that day and said, 'Go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing-floor ofAraunah the Jebusite.'	18 Ce jour-là, Gad se rendit auprès de David et lui dit: "Monte et élève un autel à Yahvé sur l'aired'Arauna le Jébuséen."
19 So, at Gad's bidding, David went up, as Yahweh had ordered.	19 David monta donc, suivant la parole de Gad, comme Yahvé l'avait ordonné.
20 When Araunah looked up and saw the king and his retinue advancing towards him-Araunah wasthreshing the wheat -- Araunah came forward and prostrated himself on the ground at the king's feet.	20 Arauna regarda et vit le roi et ses officiers qui s'avançaient vers lui. -- Arauna était en train debattre le froment. -- Il sortit et se prosterna devant le roi, la face contre terre.
21 'Why has my lord the king come to his servant?' Araunah asked. David replied, 'To buy the threshing-floor from you, to build an altar to Yahweh, so that the plague may be lifted from the people.'	21 Arauna dit: "Pourquoi Monseigneur le roi est-il venu chez son serviteur?" Et David répondit:"Pour acquérir de toi cette aire, afin de construire un autel à Yahvé. Ainsi le fléau s'écartera du peuple."
22 Araunah said to David, 'Let my lord the king take it and make what offerings he thinks fit. Here arethe oxen for the burnt offering, the threshing-sleds and the oxen's yokes for the wood.	22 Arauna dit alors au roi: "Que Monseigneur le roi la prenne et qu'il offre ce qui lui semble bon!Voici les boeufs pour l'holocauste, le traîneau et le joug des boeufs pour le bois.
23 My lord the king's servant wil give the king everything. And', Araunah said to the king, 'may Yahwehyour God accept what you offer!'	23 Le serviteur de Monseigneur le roi donne tout au roi!" Et Arauna dit au roi: "Que Yahvé tonDieu agrée ton offrande!"
24 'No,' said the king to Araunah, 'I shal give you a price for it; I will not offer Yahweh my God burntofferings which have cost me nothing.' David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.	24 Mais le roi dit à Arauna: "Non pas! Je veux te l'acheter en payant, je ne veux pas offrir à Yahvémon Dieu des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien." Et David acheta l'aire et les boeufs pour de l'argent, 50 sicles.
25 David built an altar to Yahweh and offered burnt offerings and communion sacrifices. Yahweh thentook pity on the country and the plague was lifted from Israel.	25 David construisit là un autel à Yahvé et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion.Alors Yahvé eut pitié du pays et le fléau s'écarta d'Israël.
