David addressed the words of this song to Yahweh, when Yahweh had delivered him from theclutches of all his enemies and from the clutches of Saul.1 And David spoke to the Lord the words of this verse, in the day that the Lord freed him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
He said: Yahweh is my rock and my fortress,2 And he said: “The Lord is my rock, and my strength, and my Savior.
my deliverer is my God. I take refuge in him, my rock, my shield, my saving strength, my stronghold,my place of refuge. My Saviour, you have saved me from violence;3 I will hope in him. God is my strong one, my shield, and the horn of my salvation. He lifts me up, and he is my refreshment. You, O my Savior, will free me from iniquity.
I cal to Yahweh, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my foes.4 I will call upon the Lord, who is praiseworthy; and I will be saved from my enemies.
With Death's breakers closing in on me, Belial's torrents ready to swal ow me,5 For the pangs of death have encircled me. The torrents of Belial have terrified me.
Sheol's snares on every side of me, Death's traps lying ahead of me,6 The ropes of Hell have encompassed me. The snares of death have intercepted me.
I cal ed to Yahweh in my anguish, I cried for help to my God, from his Temple he heard my voice, mycry came to his ears!7 In my tribulation, I will call upon the Lord, and I will cry out to my God. And he will heed my voice from his temple, and my outcry will reach his ears.
Then the earth quaked and rocked, the heavens' foundations shuddered, they quaked at his blazinganger.8 The earth was shaken, and it quaked. The foundations of the mountains were struck together and violently shaken, because he was angry with them.
Smoke rose from his nostrils, from his mouth devouring fire (coals were kindled at it).9 Smoke ascends from his nostrils, and fire from his mouth will devour; coals have been kindled by it.
He parted the heavens and came down, a storm-cloud underneath his feet;10 He bent down the heavens, and it descended; and a fog was beneath his feet.
riding one of the winged creatures, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind.11 And he climbed upon the cherubim, and he flew; and he slid upon the wings of the wind.
He wrapped himself in darkness, his pavilion dark waters and dense cloud.12 He set darkness as a hiding place around himself, with waters sifted from the clouds of the heavens.
A brightness lit up before him, hail and blazing fire.13 By means of the brightness of his glance, coals of fire were kindled.
Yahweh thundered from the heavens, the Most High made his voice heard.14 The Lord will thunder from heaven; and the Most High will utter his voice.
He shot his arrows and scattered them, his lightning flashed and routed them.15 He shot arrows, and he scattered them; lightning, and he consumed them.
The very springs of ocean were exposed, the world's foundations were laid bare, at the roaring ofYahweh, at the blast of breath from his nostrils!16 And the overflow of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the globe were revealed, at the rebuke of the Lord, at the exhale of the breath of his fury.
He reached down from on high, snatched me up, pul ed me from the watery depths,17 He sent from on high, and he took me up. And he drew me out of many waters.
rescued me from my mighty foe, from my enemies who were stronger than I.18 He freed me from my most powerful enemy and from those who had hated me. For they were too strong for me.
They assailed me on my day of disaster, but Yahweh was there to support me,19 He went before me in the day of my affliction, and the Lord became my firmament.
he freed me, set me at large, he rescued me, because he loves me.20 And he led me out to a wide-open place. He freed me, because I was pleasing to him.
Yahweh rewards me for my uprightness, as my hands are pure so he repays me,21 The Lord will reward me according to my justice. And he will repay me according to the cleanness of my hands.
since I have kept the ways of Yahweh, and not fal en away from my God.22 For I have kept to the ways of the Lord, and I have not acted impiously before my God.
His judgements are al before me, his statutes I have not put away from me;23 For all his judgments are in my sight. And I have not removed his precepts from me.
I am blameless before him, I keep myself clear of evil.24 And I shall be perfect with him. And I shall guard myself from my own iniquity.
Hence Yahweh repaid me for acting uprightly because he could see I was pure.25 And the Lord will recompense me according to my justice, and according to the cleanness of my hands in the sight of his eyes.
Faithful you are to the faithful, blameless with the blameless,26 With the holy one, you will be holy, and with the strong one, you will be perfect.
sincere to the sincere but cunning to the crafty,27 With the elect one, you will be elect, and with the perverse one, you will be perverse.
you save a people that is humble and humiliate those with haughty looks.28 And you will bring to salvation the poor people, and you will humble the exalted with your eyes.
Yahweh, you yourself are my lamp, my God lights up my darkness;29 For you are my lamp, O Lord. And you, O Lord, will illuminate my darkness.
with you I storm the rampart with my God I can scale any wal .30 For in you, I will run girded. In my God, I will leap over the wall.
This God, his way is blameless; the word of Yahweh is refined in the furnace, for he alone is theshield of al who take refuge in him.31 God, his way is immaculate; the eloquence of the Lord is an exacting fire. He is the shield of all who hope in him.
For who is God but Yahweh, who is a rock but our God:32 Who is God except the Lord? And who is strong except our God?
this God who girds me with strength, who makes my way free from blame,33 God, he has girded me with fortitude, and he has made my way perfect:
who makes me as swift as a deer and sets me firmly on the heights,34 making my feet like the feet of the stag, and stationing me upon my exalted places,
who trains my hands for battle my arms to bend a bow of bronze.35 teaching my hands to do battle, and making my arms like a bow of brass.
You give me your invincible shield, you never cease to listen to me,36 You have given me the shield of your salvation. And your mildness has multiplied me.
you give me the strides of a giant, give me ankles that never weaken-37 You will enlarge my steps under me, and my ankles will not fail.
I pursue my enemies and exterminate them, not turning back till they are annihilated;38 I will pursue my enemies, and crush them. And I will not turn back, until I consume them.
I strike them down, and they cannot rise, they fal , they are under my feet.39 I will consume them and break them apart, so that they cannot rise up; they will fall under my feet.
You have girded me with strength for the fight, bent down my assailants beneath me,40 You have girded me with strength for the battle. Those who resisted me, you have bent down under me.
made my enemies retreat before me; and those who hate me I destroy.41 You have caused my enemies to turn their back to me; they have hatred for me, and I shall destroy them.
They cry out, there is no one to save, to Yahweh, but no answer comes.42 They will cry out, and there will be no one to save; to the Lord, and he will not heed them.
I crumble them like the dust of the squares, trample them like the mud of the streets.43 I will wipe them away like the dust of the earth. I will break them apart and crush them, like the mud of the streets.
You free me from the quarrels of my people, you place me at the head of the nations, a people I didnot know are now my servants,44 You will save me from the contradictions of my people. You will preserve me to be the head of the Gentiles; a people I do not know shall serve me.
foreigners come wooing my favour, no sooner do they hear than they obey me,45 The sons of foreigners, who will resist me, at the hearing of the ear they will be obedient to me.
foreigners grow faint of heart, they come trembling out of their fastnesses.46 The foreigners flowed away, but they will be drawn together in their anguishes.
Life to Yahweh! Blessed be my rock! Exalted be the God of my salvation,47 The Lord lives, and my God is blessed. And the strong God of my salvation shall be exalted.
the God who gives me vengeance and crushes the peoples under me,48 God gives me vindication, and he casts down the peoples under me.
who takes me away from my enemies. You lift me high above those who attack me, you deliver mefrom the man of violence.49 He leads me away from my enemies, and he lifts me up from those who resist me. You will free me from the iniquitous man.
For this I wil praise you, Yahweh, among the nations, and sing praise to your name.50 Because of this, I will confess to you, O Lord, among the Gentiles, and I will sing to your name:
He saves his king, time after time, displays faithful love for his anointed, for David and his heirs forever.51 magnifying the salvation of his king, and showing mercy to David, his Christ, and to his offspring forever.”
