1 After this, when the king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,	1 Dopo queste cose avvenne che mori il re dei figli di Ammon e gli successe nel regno Hanon suo figlio.
2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent his representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But, when David's representativesreached the Ammonites' country,	2 David disse: « Farò del bene ad Hanon figlio di Naas, come il padre suo fece del bene a me ». E così mandò a consolarlo della morte del padre, per mezzo dei suoi servi. Ma quando i servi di David furon giunti nella terra dei figli di Ammon,
3 the Ammonite princes said to Hanun their master, 'Do you really think David means to honour yourfather when he sends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why David has sent hisrepresentatives to you is to explore the city, to reconnoitre and so overthrow it.'	3 i principi dei figli d'Ammon dissero ad Hanon loro signore: « Credi tu che David li abbia mandati a consolarti per fare onore a tuo padre? Non è piuttosto per riconoscere ed esplorare la città, per distruggerla, che ti ha mandati i suoi servi? »
4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved off half their beards, cut their clothes offhalfway up, at their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Allora Hanon, presi i servi di David, fece loro radere la metà della barba e tagliare la metà delle loro vesti fino alle natiche, e poi li rimandò.
5 When David was told, he sent someone to meet them, since the men were overcome with shame.'Stay in Jericho', the king said, 'until your beards have grown again, and come back then.'	5 Saputa la cosa, David mandò loro incontro, perchè quegli uomini erano oltremodo e ignominiosamente confusi, e fece loro dire: « Fermatevi in Gerico sino a che non vi è cresciuta la barba, e poi tornate ».
6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, they sent agents to hire twentythousand foot soldiers from the Aramaeans of Beth-Rehob and the Aramaeans of Zobah, one thousand menfrom the king of Maacah and twelve thousand men from the prince of Tob.	6 Ma i figli d'Ammon, accortisi d'aver fatta ingiuria a David, mandarono ad assoldare dei Siri di Rohob, dei Siri di Soba, venti mila uomini a piedi, e mille uomini dal re di Maaca, dodici mila da Istob.
7 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.	7 David, saputolo, mandò Gioab con tutto l'esercito dei combattenti.
8 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the Aramaeans ofZobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah kept their distance in the open country.	8 Uscirono adunque i figli d'Ammon, e si schierarono davanti all'entrata della loro porta; mentre i Siri di Soba, di Rohob, d'Istob e di Maaca stavano a parte nella campagna.
9 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.	9 Quando Gioab vide che la battaglia era preparata contro di lui di fronte e alle spalle, fece una scelta fra tutti i migliori di Israele, e ordinò la sua armata contro i Siri;
10 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.	10 il rimanente del popolo lo diede ad Abisai suo fratello, il quale l'ordinò in battaglia contro i figli d'Ammon.
11 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.	11 Gioab gli disse: « Se i Siri prevalgono contro di me, mi darai soccorso: se i figli d'Aminon prevalgono contro di te, verrò io in tuo aiuto.
12 Be brave! Let us acquit ourselves like men for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God.And let Yahweh do as he thinks right!'	12 Sii valoroso, e combattiamo per il nostro popolo e per la città del nostro Dio; il Signore poi farà quello che a lui piacerà ».
13 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.	13 Gioab colla sua gente attaccò adunque i Siri, che subito fuggirono dinanzi a lui;
14 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from Abishai and withdrew intothe city. Hence, Joab broke off his campaign against the Ammonites and returned to Jerusalem.	14 e i figli d'Ammon, veduto che i Siri eran fuggiti, fuggirono anch'essi dinanzi ad Abisai e rientrarono nella città. Poi Gioab si ritirò dai figli d'Ammon e andò a Gerusalemme.
15 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, concentrated their forces.	15 Ma i Siri, vedendo che erano stati battuti da Israele, si riunirono tutti insieme.
16 Hadadezer sent messengers and mobilised the Aramaeans living on the other side of the river; andthese arrived at Helam, with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 Adarezer fece venire i Siri che eran di là dal fiume, e condusse con sè il loro esercito, e Sobac, capo delle milizie d'Adarezer, era il loro principe.
17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan and arrived at Helam. TheAramaeans drew up in line facing David and engaged him.	17 Saputa la cosa, David riunì tutto Israele, passò il Giordano e andò a Helam. I Siri ordinarono la battaglia contro David e combatterono contro di lui;
18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David kil ed seven hundred of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; he also cut down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.	18 ma i Siri fuggirono dinanzi a Israele, e David, dei Siri, distrusse settecento carri e quaranta mila soldati a cavallo, e percosse Sobac, capo delle milizie, che morì subito.
19 When al Hadadezer's vassal kings saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace withthe Israelites and became their subjects. The Aramaeans were afraid to give any more help to the Ammonites.	19 Or tutti i re che eran venuti in aiuto di Adarezer, vedendosi sconfitti da Israele, presi dalla paura, fuggirono dinanzi a Israele in numero di cinquant'otto mila uomini. Poi fecero pace con Israele e gli furon soggetti, e i Siri non ardirono più di dare soccorsi ai figli d'Ammon.
