NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 After this, when the king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,	1 Después de esto, murió el rey de los amonitas, y su hijo Janún reinó en lugar de él.
2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent his representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But, when David's representativesreached the Ammonites' country,	2 David dijo: «Voy a retribuirle a Janún, hijo de Najás, las pruebas de lealtad que me ha dado su padre». Y por intermedio de sus servidores, le envió las condolencias por la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando los servidores de David llegaron al país de los amonitas,
3 the Ammonite princes said to Hanun their master, 'Do you really think David means to honour yourfather when he sends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why David has sent hisrepresentatives to you is to explore the city, to reconnoitre and so overthrow it.'	3 los jefes amonitas dijeron a Janún, su señor: «¿Crees que David te hace llegar sus condolencias para honrar a tu padre? ¿No será que ha enviado a sus servidores como espías, para explorar la ciudad y sembrar la agitación?».
4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved off half their beards, cut their clothes offhalfway up, at their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Entonces Janún hizo detener a los servidores de David, les afeitó la mitad de la barba, les cortó la ropa a la altura de las nalgas y los despidió.
5 When David was told, he sent someone to meet them, since the men were overcome with shame.'Stay in Jericho', the king said, 'until your beards have grown again, and come back then.'	5 Apenas lo pusieron al tanto de lo sucedido, David ordenó que fueran a recibir a aquellos hombres, porque estaban muy avergonzados. Y el rey les mandó decir: «Quédense en Jericó hasta que les crezca la barba, y después vengan».
6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, they sent agents to hire twentythousand foot soldiers from the Aramaeans of Beth-Rehob and the Aramaeans of Zobah, one thousand menfrom the king of Maacah and twelve thousand men from the prince of Tob.	6 Cuando los amonitas advirtieron que se habían atraído el odio de David, mandaron a contratar veinte mil soldados de los arameos de Bet Rejob y de los arameos de Sobá, al rey de Maacá con mil hombres, y a veinte mil hombres de la gente de Tob.
7 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.	7 David, al enterarse, envió a Joab con todo el ejército y con sus guerreros.
8 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the Aramaeans ofZobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah kept their distance in the open country.	8 Los amonitas salieron y formaron en orden de batalla a la entrada de la Puerta, pero los arameos de Sobá y de Rejob, y la gente de Tob y de Maacá se mantuvieron aparte, en campo abierto.
9 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.	9 Cuando Joab vio que había dos frentes de batalla, uno delante de él y otro detrás, seleccionó a lo más escogido de Israel y los alineó frente a los arameos,
10 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.	10 dejando el resto de la tropa a las órdenes de su hermano Abisai. Luego les hizo tomar posiciones frente a los amonitas,
11 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.	11 y dijo: «Si los arameos son más fuertes que yo, tú vendrás en mi ayuda; y si los amonitas son más fuertes que tú, yo iré a auxiliarte.
12 Be brave! Let us acquit ourselves like men for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God.And let Yahweh do as he thinks right!'	12 ¡Animo! ¡Luchemos valerosamente por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios! ¡Y que el Señor haga lo que te parezca bien!».
13 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.	13 Entonces Joab avanzó con sus tropas para enfrentarse con Aram, y estos huyeron delante de él.
14 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from Abishai and withdrew intothe city. Hence, Joab broke off his campaign against the Ammonites and returned to Jerusalem.	14 Cuando los amonitas vieron que los arameos habían huido, también ellos huyeron delante de Abisai y entraron en la ciudad. Joab, por su parte, suspendió su campaña contra los amonitas y volvió a Jerusalén.
15 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, concentrated their forces.	15 Los arameos, al ver que habían sido vencidos, concentraron sus tropas,
16 Hadadezer sent messengers and mobilised the Aramaeans living on the other side of the river; andthese arrived at Helam, with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 y Hadadézer envió mensajeros para movilizar a los arameos del otro lado del Río. Estos llegaron a Helam a las órdenes de Sobac, el jefe del ejército de Hadadézer.
17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan and arrived at Helam. TheAramaeans drew up in line facing David and engaged him.	17 Cuando informaron de esto a David, él concentró a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán y llegó a Helam. Los arameos tomaron posiciones frente a David y le libraron batalla.
18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David kil ed seven hundred of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; he also cut down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.	18 Pero tuvieron que huir delante de Israel, y David les mató a los arameos setecientos caballos y cuarenta mil hombres de caballería. También hirió a Sobac, el jefe del ejército, el cual murió allí mismo.
19 When al Hadadezer's vassal kings saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace withthe Israelites and became their subjects. The Aramaeans were afraid to give any more help to the Ammonites.	19 Cuando todos los reyes que estaban a las órdenes de Hadadézer vieron que habían caído derrotados ante Israel, hicieron las paces con los israelitas y les quedaron sometidos. En adelante, los arameos no quisieron prestar más ayuda a los amonitas.
