1 After this, when the king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,	1 - Dopo queste cose avvenne che morì il re dei figli di Ammon e successe a lui nel regno il figliuolo Anon.
2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent his representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But, when David's representativesreached the Ammonites' country,	2 Disse Davide: «Mostrerò la mia benevolenza ad Anon figliuolo di Naas in ricambio di quella che suo padre mostrò a mio riguardo». Mandò adunque Davide i suoi servi per consolare Anon della perdita del padre. Ma arrivati che furono i servi di Davide nel territorio dei figli di Ammon,
3 the Ammonite princes said to Hanun their master, 'Do you really think David means to honour yourfather when he sends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why David has sent hisrepresentatives to you is to explore the city, to reconnoitre and so overthrow it.'	3 i principi degli Ammoniti dissero al loro signore Anon: «Credi tu forse che Davide abbia mandato questi consolatori per onorare tuo padre? o non è piuttosto a credersi che abbia inviati a te i suoi servi per spiare ed esplorare la città e distruggerla?».
4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved off half their beards, cut their clothes offhalfway up, at their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Prese adunque Anon i servi di Davide, fece loro radere metà della barba, e tagliare le loro vesti a metà fino alle natiche e li rimandò.
5 When David was told, he sent someone to meet them, since the men were overcome with shame.'Stay in Jericho', the king said, 'until your beards have grown again, and come back then.'	5 Davide quando seppe tal cosa mandò a incontrarli, perchè erano tutti profondamente umiliati, e ingiunse loro: «Rimanete a Gerico finchè vi sia cresciuta la barba, poi tornerete».
6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, they sent agents to hire twentythousand foot soldiers from the Aramaeans of Beth-Rehob and the Aramaeans of Zobah, one thousand menfrom the king of Maacah and twelve thousand men from the prince of Tob.	6 Dal canto loro gli Ammoniti vedendo di aver fatto ingiuria a Davide mandarono ad assoldare i Siri di Roob e i Siri di Soba, ventimila pedoni e mille uomini del re di Maaca e dodicimila da Istob.
7 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.	7 Quando Davide seppe questo, spedì [contro di loro] Joab e tutto il suo esercito.
8 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the Aramaeans ofZobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah kept their distance in the open country.	8 Usciti adunque i figli di Ammon ordinarono le schiere all'entrata della porta, mentre i Siri di Soba, di Roob, di Istob e di Maaca si schierarono invece a parte nella campagna.
9 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.	9 Vedendo allora Joab che aveva da combattere e di fronte e alle spalle, scelse per sè i più valorosi d'Israele e si schierò con essi di fronte ai Siri;
10 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.	10 mentre il resto dell'esercito lasciò ad Abisai suo fratello, che si mise in ordine di battaglia contro i figli di Ammon.
11 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.	11 Joab poi gli disse: «Se i Siri saranno in prevalenza contro di me, tu mi aiuterai, ma se i figli di Ammon prevalessero contro di te, io verrò in tuo soccorso.
12 Be brave! Let us acquit ourselves like men for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God.And let Yahweh do as he thinks right!'	12 Diportati da valoroso e combattiamo per il nostro popolo e per la città del nostro Dio. Il Signore poi farà ciò che è bene al suo cospetto».
13 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.	13 Joab e il popolo che era con lui ingaggiarono tosto battaglia contro i Siri i quali fuggirono dinanzi a lui.
14 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from Abishai and withdrew intothe city. Hence, Joab broke off his campaign against the Ammonites and returned to Jerusalem.	14 Avendo visto i figliuoli di Ammon che i Siri erano fuggiti, fuggirono essi pure dinanzi ad Abisai ed entrarono nella città. Allora Joab se ne partì dai figli di Ammon e fece ritorno a Gerusalemme.
15 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, concentrated their forces.	15 Vedendosi i Siri sconfitti da Israele, si riunirono di nuovo
16 Hadadezer sent messengers and mobilised the Aramaeans living on the other side of the river; andthese arrived at Helam, with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 e Adarezer fece venire i Siri che erano al di là del fiume e condusse seco il loro esercito. Sobac, capitano delle milizie di Adarezer, era il loro duce.
17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan and arrived at Helam. TheAramaeans drew up in line facing David and engaged him.	17 La cosa venne riferita a Davide, il quale radunò tutto Israele e passato il Giordano giunse a Elam. I Siri ordinarono le loro schiere contro Davide e combatterono contro di lui,
18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David kil ed seven hundred of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; he also cut down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.	18 ma i Siri se ne fuggirono dinanzi ad Israele e Davide uccise ai Siri gli uomini di settecento carri e quarantamila cavalieri e colpì altresì il capo della loro armata Sobac, che morì sul campo.
19 When al Hadadezer's vassal kings saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace withthe Israelites and became their subjects. The Aramaeans were afraid to give any more help to the Ammonites.	19 Tutti i re soggetti ad Adarezer, vistisi sconfitti da Israele, temettero e voltarono le spalle ad Israele in numero di cinquantottomila; fecero poi la pace con Israele e si assoggettarono a lui e i Siri non s'arrischiarono più di soccorrere i figli di Ammon.
