1 After this, when the king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,	1 Après cela, il advint que le roi des Ammonites mourut et que son fils Hanûn régna à sa place.
2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent his representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But, when David's representativesreached the Ammonites' country,	2 David se dit: "J'aurai pour Hanûn, fils de Nahash, les mêmes bontés que son père a eues pourmoi", et David envoya ses serviteurs lui présenter des condoléances au sujet de son père. Mais lorsque lesserviteurs de David arrivèrent au pays des Ammonites,
3 the Ammonite princes said to Hanun their master, 'Do you really think David means to honour yourfather when he sends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why David has sent hisrepresentatives to you is to explore the city, to reconnoitre and so overthrow it.'	3 les princes des Ammonites dirent à Hanûn leur maître: "T'imagines-tu que David veuille honorerton père, parce qu'il t'a envoyé des porteurs de condoléances? N'est-ce pas plutôt afin d'explorer la ville, pour enconnaître les défenses et la renverser, que David t'a envoyé ses serviteurs?"
4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved off half their beards, cut their clothes offhalfway up, at their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Alors Hanûn se saisit des serviteurs de David, il leur fit raser la moitié de la barbe, et couper lesvêtements à mi-hauteur jusqu'aux fesses, puis il les congédia.
5 When David was told, he sent someone to meet them, since the men were overcome with shame.'Stay in Jericho', the king said, 'until your beards have grown again, and come back then.'	5 Lorsque David en fut informé, il envoya quelqu'un à leur rencontre, car ces gens étaient couvertsde honte, et le roi leur fit dire: "Restez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, et vous reviendrez."
6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, they sent agents to hire twentythousand foot soldiers from the Aramaeans of Beth-Rehob and the Aramaeans of Zobah, one thousand menfrom the king of Maacah and twelve thousand men from the prince of Tob.	6 Les Ammonites virent bien qu'ils s'étaient rendus odieux à David et ils envoyèrent des messagerspour prendre à leur solde les Araméens de Bet-Rehob et les Araméens de Coba, 20.000 hommes de pied, le roide Maaka, mille hommes, et le prince de Tob, 12.000 hommes.
7 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.	7 L'ayant appris, David envoya Joab avec toute l'armée, les preux.
8 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the Aramaeans ofZobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah kept their distance in the open country.	8 Les Ammonites sortirent et se rangèrent en bataille à l'entrée de la porte, tandis que les Araméensde Coba et de Rehob et les gens de Tob et de Maaka étaient à part en rase campagne.
9 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.	9 Voyant qu'il avait un front de combat à la fois devant et derrière lui, Joab fit choix de toute l'élited'Israël et la mit en ligne face au Araméens.
10 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.	10 Il confia à son frère Abishaï le reste de l'armée et le mit en ligne face aux Ammonites.
11 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.	11 Il dit: "Si les Araméens l'emportent sur moi, tu viendras à mon secours; si les Ammonitesl'emportent sur toi, j'irai te secourir.
12 Be brave! Let us acquit ourselves like men for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God.And let Yahweh do as he thinks right!'	12 Aie bon courage et montrons-nous forts pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu. QueYahvé fasse ce qui lui semblera bon!"
13 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.	13 Joab et la troupe qui était avec lui engagèrent le combat contre les Araméens et ceux-cis'enfuirent devant eux.
14 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from Abishai and withdrew intothe city. Hence, Joab broke off his campaign against the Ammonites and returned to Jerusalem.	14 Quand les Ammonites virent que les Araméens avaient fui, ils lâchèrent pied devant Abishaï etrentrèrent dans la ville. Alors Joab revint de la guerre contre les Ammonites et rentra à Jérusalem.
15 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, concentrated their forces.	15 Voyant qu'ils avaient été battus devant Israël, les Araméens concentrèrent leurs forces.
16 Hadadezer sent messengers and mobilised the Aramaeans living on the other side of the river; andthese arrived at Helam, with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 Hadadézer envoya des messagers et mobilisa les Araméens qui sont de l'autre côté du Fleuve.Ceux-ci arrivèrent à Hélam, ayant à leur tête Shobak, le chef de l'armée de Hadadézer.
17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan and arrived at Helam. TheAramaeans drew up in line facing David and engaged him.	17 Cela fut rapporté à David, qui rassembla tout Israël, passa le Jourdain et arriva à Hélam. LesAraméens se rangèrent en face de David et lui livrèrent bataille.
18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David kil ed seven hundred of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; he also cut down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.	18 Mais les Araméens lâchèrent pied devant Israël et David leur tua 700 attelages et 40.000hommes, il abattit aussi Shobak, leur général, qui mourut sur les lieux.
19 When al Hadadezer's vassal kings saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace withthe Israelites and became their subjects. The Aramaeans were afraid to give any more help to the Ammonites.	19 Lorsque tous les rois vassaux de Hadadézer virent qu'ils avaient été battus devant Israël, ilsfirent la paix avec les Israélites et leur furent assujettis. Les Araméens craignirent de porter encore secours auxAmmonites.
