1 After this, when the king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,	1 En ce temps-là mourut le roi des Ammonites, son fils Anoun régna à sa place.
2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent his representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But, when David's representativesreached the Ammonites' country,	2 David se dit: “Je serai plein d’attentions pour Anoun, fils de Nahach, puisque son père a fait la même chose pour moi.” David envoya donc ses serviteurs pour lui présenter ses condoléances à l’occasion de la mort de son père. Mais lorsque les serviteurs de David arrivèrent chez les Ammonites,
3 the Ammonite princes said to Hanun their master, 'Do you really think David means to honour yourfather when he sends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why David has sent hisrepresentatives to you is to explore the city, to reconnoitre and so overthrow it.'	3 les princes Ammonites dirent à leur maître Anoun: “Penses-tu donc que David a envoyé ses messagers avec des condoléances pour honorer ton père? Il les a sûrement envoyés pour espionner la ville, pour en connaître les défenses et s’en emparer?”
4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved off half their beards, cut their clothes offhalfway up, at their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Alors Anoun saisit les serviteurs de David, il leur rasa la moitié de la barbe, coupa leurs vêtements à la hauteur des fesses et les renvoya;
5 When David was told, he sent someone to meet them, since the men were overcome with shame.'Stay in Jericho', the king said, 'until your beards have grown again, and come back then.'	5 En apprenant cela, David envoya quelqu’un à leur rencontre car ces hommes étaient couverts de honte. Il leur fit dire: “Restez à Jéricho jusqu’à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, vous reviendrez ensuite.”
6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, they sent agents to hire twentythousand foot soldiers from the Aramaeans of Beth-Rehob and the Aramaeans of Zobah, one thousand menfrom the king of Maacah and twelve thousand men from the prince of Tob.	6 Les Ammonites se rendirent bien compte qu’ils s’étaient rendus odieux à David; ils engagèrent donc à leur service les Araméens de Beth-Réhob et les Araméens de Soba, au nombre de 20 000 hommes. Ils engagèrent également le roi de Maaka avec 1 000 hommes et 12 000 hommes de Tob.
7 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.	7 Quand David apprit cela, il envoya Joab avec toute l’armée et les troupes d’élite.
8 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the Aramaeans ofZobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah kept their distance in the open country.	8 Les Ammonites sortirent et se rangèrent en bataille à l’entrée de la porte, tandis que les Araméens de Soba et de Réhob avec les gens de Tob et de Maaka restaient en rase campagne.
9 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.	9 Joab se retrouva donc avec des ennemis devant lui et derrière lui. Il choisit les troupes d’élite d’Israël et les rangea face aux Araméens,
10 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.	10 puis il confia à son frère Abisaï le reste du peuple, et celui-ci les rangea face aux Ammonites.
11 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.	11 Il dit alors: “Si les Araméens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours, si les Ammonites sont plus forts que toi, je viendrai à ton secours.
12 Be brave! Let us acquit ourselves like men for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God.And let Yahweh do as he thinks right!'	12 Sois fort, montrons-nous courageux pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu; Yahvé fera ce qui lui semblera bon.”
13 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.	13 Joab s’avança avec son armée pour combattre les Araméens, et ils s’enfuirent devant lui.
14 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from Abishai and withdrew intothe city. Hence, Joab broke off his campaign against the Ammonites and returned to Jerusalem.	14 Lorsque les Ammonites virent que les Araméens fuyaient, eux aussi tournèrent le dos devant Abisaï et rentrèrent en ville. Alors Joab mit fin à la campagne contre les Ammonites et rentra à Jérusalem.
15 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, concentrated their forces.	15 Voyant qu’ils avaient été battus par Israël, les Araméens rassemblèrent leurs forces.
16 Hadadezer sent messengers and mobilised the Aramaeans living on the other side of the river; andthese arrived at Helam, with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 Hadadézer envoya des messagers pour appeler tous les Araméens qui étaient de l’autre côté du fleuve et ils se rassemblèrent à Hélam; Chobak, le chef de l’armée de Hadadézer, était à leur tête.
17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan and arrived at Helam. TheAramaeans drew up in line facing David and engaged him.	17 Lorsque David l’apprit, il réunit tout Israël, traversa le Jourdain et arriva à Hélam.
18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David kil ed seven hundred of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; he also cut down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.	18 Les Araméens se rangèrent en bataille face à David et le combat s’engagea. Les Araméens tournèrent le dos devant Israël et David leur tua 700 attelages et 40 000 hommes. Chobak, leur chef, fut abattu et mourut sur place.
19 When al Hadadezer's vassal kings saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace withthe Israelites and became their subjects. The Aramaeans were afraid to give any more help to the Ammonites.	19 Lorsque tous les rois, vassaux de Hadadézer, virent qu’ils avaient été battus par Israël, ils demandèrent la paix aux Israélites et firent leur soumission; à partir de ce jour les Araméens n’osèrent plus porter secours aux Ammonites.
