1 After this, when the king of the Ammonites died and his son Hanun succeeded him,	1 Dopo questi fatti, il re degli Ammoniti morì e suo figlio Canùn diventò re al suo posto.
2 David thought, 'I shal show Hanun son of Nahash the same faithful love as his father showed me.'And David sent his representatives to offer him condolences over his father. But, when David's representativesreached the Ammonites' country,	2 Davide disse: "Voglio usare benevolenza con Canùn, figlio di Nacas, come suo padre usò benevolenza con me". Davide mandò i suoi servi a fargli le condoglianze per suo padre. Quando i servi di Davide giunsero nella terra degli Ammoniti,
3 the Ammonite princes said to Hanun their master, 'Do you really think David means to honour yourfather when he sends you messengers with sympathy? On the contrary, the reason why David has sent hisrepresentatives to you is to explore the city, to reconnoitre and so overthrow it.'	3 i capi degli Ammoniti dissero a Canùn loro signore: "Forse Davide, mandando a consolarti, vuole rendere onore a tuo padre alla tua presenza? Non è piuttosto per spiare la città, per esplorarla e poi distruggerla che Davide ti ha mandato i suoi servi?".
4 Whereupon Hanun seized David's representatives, shaved off half their beards, cut their clothes offhalfway up, at their buttocks, and sent them away.	4 Allora Canùn prese i servi di Davide, rase loro metà della barba e tagliò le loro vesti a metà fino alle loro natiche, poi li rimandò.
5 When David was told, he sent someone to meet them, since the men were overcome with shame.'Stay in Jericho', the king said, 'until your beards have grown again, and come back then.'	5 Informato della cosa, Davide mandò alcuni ad incontrarli, perché quegli uomini erano molto confusi. Il re ordinò loro: "Rimanete a Gerico finché vi ricresca la barba, poi ritornerete".
6 When the Ammonites realised that they had antagonised David, they sent agents to hire twentythousand foot soldiers from the Aramaeans of Beth-Rehob and the Aramaeans of Zobah, one thousand menfrom the king of Maacah and twelve thousand men from the prince of Tob.	6 Gli Ammoniti, accortisi di essersi resi odiosi a Davide, mandarono ad assoldare ventimila fanti degli Aramei di Bet-Recòb e di Zobà; mille uomini del re di Maacà e dodicimila uomini della gente di Tob.
7 When David heard this, he sent Joab with the whole army, the champions.	7 Quando Davide l'udì, spedì Ioab con tutto l'esercito e i prodi.
8 The Ammonites marched out and drew up their line of battle at the city gate, while the Aramaeans ofZobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah kept their distance in the open country.	8 Gli Ammoniti uscirono e si schierarono a battaglia all'ingresso della porta della città, mentre gli Aramei di Zobà, Recòb e la gente di Tob e Maacà se ne stavano separati in campo aperto.
9 Joab, seeing that he had to fight on two fronts, to his front and to his rear, chose the best of Israel'spicked men and drew them up in line facing the Aramaeans.	9 Ioab, quando vide che aveva contro di sé due fronti di battaglia, uno davanti e uno dietro, scelse tutte le migliori truppe d'Israele e le schierò contro Aram,
10 He entrusted the rest of the army to his brother Abishai, and drew them up in line facing theAmmonites.	10 e affidò il resto della truppa in mano ad Abisài, suo fratello, perché lo schierasse contro gli Ammoniti.
11 'If the Aramaeans prove too strong for me,' he said, 'you must come to my help; if the Ammonitesprove too strong for you, I shal come to yours.	11 E disse: "Se Aram prevarrà su me, tu mi verrai in aiuto; se invece gli Ammoniti saranno più forti di te, allora io verrò in tuo aiuto.
12 Be brave! Let us acquit ourselves like men for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God.And let Yahweh do as he thinks right!'	12 Coraggio! Mostriamoci forti per il nostro popolo e per le città del nostro Dio! E il Signore faccia poi quello che a lui piacerà!".
13 Joab and the force with him joined battle with the Aramaeans, who fled at his onslaught.	13 Ioab, col popolo che aveva con sé, avanzò in battaglia contro gli Aramei, i quali presero la fuga davanti a lui.
14 When the Ammonites saw that the Aramaeans had fled, they too fled from Abishai and withdrew intothe city. Hence, Joab broke off his campaign against the Ammonites and returned to Jerusalem.	14 Gli Ammoniti, quando videro che gli Aramei si erano dati alla fuga, fuggirono anch'essi davanti ad Abisài e rientrarono in città. Allora Ioab smise di attaccare gli Ammoniti e ritornò a Gerusalemme.
15 The Aramaeans, realising that Israel had got the better of them, concentrated their forces.	15 Quando gli Aramei videro che erano stati battuti da Israele, si riunirono insieme.
16 Hadadezer sent messengers and mobilised the Aramaeans living on the other side of the river; andthese arrived at Helam, with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 Adad-E'zer mandò a mobilitare gli Aramei che erano di là del Fiume. Essi giunsero a Chelàm sotto la guida di Sobàk, comandante dell'esercito di Adad-E'zer.
17 David, being informed of this, mustered al Israel, crossed the Jordan and arrived at Helam. TheAramaeans drew up in line facing David and engaged him.	17 Davide lo seppe, radunò tutto Israele e, attraversato il Giordano, andò a Chelàm; allora gli Aramei si schierarono contro Davide e gli dettero battaglia.
18 But the Aramaeans fled from Israel, and David kil ed seven hundred of their chariot teams and fortythousand men; he also cut down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.	18 Ma gli Aramei dovettero fuggire davanti a Israele. Davide uccise settecento cavalli degli Aramei e quarantamila cavalieri; colpì anche Sobàk, capo del loro esercito, che morì in quel luogo.
19 When al Hadadezer's vassal kings saw that Israel had got the better of them, they made peace withthe Israelites and became their subjects. The Aramaeans were afraid to give any more help to the Ammonites.	19 Quando tutti i re tributari di Adad-E'zer videro che erano rimasti sconfitti davanti a Israele, fecero pace con Israele e si assoggettarono. Così gli Aramei ebbero paura di andare ancora in aiuto degli Ammoniti.
