Genesis 46

NEW JERUSALEM	MODERN HEBREW BIBLE
1 So Israel set out with al his possessions. Arriving at Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of hisfather Isaac.	1 ויסע ישראל וכל אשר לו ויבא בארה שבע ויזבח זבחים לאלהי אביו יצחק
2 God spoke to Israel in a vision at night, 'Jacob, Jacob,' he said. 'Here I am,' he replied.	2 ויאמר אלהים לישראל במראת הלילה ויאמר יעקב יעקב ויאמר הנני
3 'I am El, God of your father,' he said. 'Do not be afraid of going down to Egypt, for I will make you intoa great nation there.	3 ויאמר אנכי האל אלהי אביך אל תירא מרדה מצרימה כי לגוי גדול אשימך שם
4 I shal go down to Egypt with you and I myself shall bring you back again, and Joseph's hand wilclose your eyes.'	4 אנכי ארד עמך מצרימה ואנכי אעלך גם עלה ויוסף ישית ידו על עיניך
5 So Jacob left Beersheba. Israel's sons conveyed their father Jacob, their little children and their wivesin the waggons Pharaoh had sent to fetch him.	5 ויקם יעקב מבאר שבע וישאו בני ישראל את יעקב אביהם ואת טפם ואת נשיהם בעגלות אשר שלח פרעה לשאת אתו
6 Taking their livestock and all that they had acquired in Canaan, they arrived in Egypt -- Jacob and alhis offspring.	6 ויקחו את מקניהם ואת רכושם אשר רכשו בארץ כנען ויבאו מצרימה יעקב וכל זרעו אתו
7 With him to Egypt, he brought his sons and grandsons, his daughters and granddaughters -- al hisoffspring.	7 בניו ובני בניו אתו בנתיו ובנות בניו וכל זרעו הביא אתו מצרימה
8 These were the names of the Israelites, Jacob and his descendants, who arrived in Egypt: Reuben,Jacob's first-born,	8 ואלה שמות בני ישראל הבאים מצרימה יעקב ובניו בכר יעקב ראובן
9 and the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pal u, Hezron and Carmi.	9 ובני ראובן חנוך ופלוא וחצרון וכרמי
10 The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul the son of the Canaanitewoman.	10 ובני שמעון ימואל וימין ואהד ויכין וצחר ושאול בן הכנענית
11 The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.	11 ובני לוי גרשון קהת ומררי
12 The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (Er and Onan had died in Canaan), andHezron and Hamul sons of Perez.	12 ובני יהודה ער ואונן ושלה ופרץ וזרח וימת ער ואונן בארץ כנען ויהיו בני פרץ חצרון וחמול
13 The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puvah, Jashub and Shimron.	13 ובני יששכר תולע ופוה ויוב ושמרון
14 The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon and Jahleel.	14 ובני זבולן סרד ואלון ויחלאל
15 These were the sons that Leah had borne to Jacob in Paddan-Aram, besides his daughter Dinah; inal , his sons and daughters numbered thirty-three.	15 אלה בני לאה אשר ילדה ליעקב בפדן ארם ואת דינה בתו כל נפש בניו ובנותיו שלשים ושלש
16 The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.	16 ובני גד צפיון וחגי שוני ואצבן ערי וארודי ואראלי
17 The sons of Asher: Jimnah, Jishvah, Jishvi, Beriah, with their sister Serah; the sons of Beriah: Heberand Malchiel.	17 ובני אשר ימנה וישוה וישוי ובריעה ושרח אחתם ובני בריעה חבר ומלכיאל
18 These were the sons of Zilpah whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah; she bore these to Jacob --sixteen persons.	18 אלה בני זלפה אשר נתן לבן ללאה בתו ותלד את אלה ליעקב שש עשרה נפש
19 The sons of Rachel wife of Jacob: Joseph and Benjamin.	19 בני רחל אשת יעקב יוסף ובנימן
20 Born to Joseph in Egypt were: Manasseh and Ephraim sons of Asenath, daughter of Potiphera priestof On.	20 ויולד ליוסף בארץ מצרים אשר ילדה לו אסנת בת פוטי פרע כהן אן את מנשה ואת אפרים
21 The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.	21 ובני בנימן בלע ובכר ואשבל גרא ונעמן אחי וראש מפים וחפים וארד
22 These were the sons that Rachel bore to Jacob -- fourteen persons in al .	22 אלה בני רחל אשר ילד ליעקב כל נפש ארבעה עשר
23 The sons of Dan: Hushim.	23 ובני דן חשים
24 The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer and Shil em.	24 ובני נפתלי יחצאל וגוני ויצר ושלם
25 These were the sons of Bilhah whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel; she bore these to Jacob --seven persons in all.	25 אלה בני בלהה אשר נתן לבן לרחל בתו ותלד את אלה ליעקב כל נפש שבעה
26 Altogether, the members of Jacob's family who arrived with him in Egypt -- his own issue, notcounting the wives of Jacob's sons -- numbered sixty-six all told.	26 כל הנפש הבאה ליעקב מצרימה יצאי ירכו מלבד נשי בני יעקב כל נפש ששים ושש
27 With Joseph's sons born to him in Egypt -- two persons -- the members of Jacob's family who wentto Egypt totalled seventy.	27 ובני יוסף אשר ילד לו במצרים נפש שנים כל הנפש לבית יעקב הבאה מצרימה שבעים
28 Israel sent Judah ahead to Joseph, so that Judah might present himself to Joseph in Goshen. Whenthey arrived in Goshen,	28 ואת יהודה שלח לפניו אל יוסף להורת לפניו גשנה ויבאו ארצה גשן
29 Joseph had his chariot made ready and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as heappeared he threw his arms round his neck and for a long time wept on his shoulder.	29 ויאסר יוסף מרכבתו ויעל לקראת ישראל אביו גשנה וירא אליו ויפל על צואריו ויבך על צואריו עוד
30 Israel said to Joseph, 'Now I can die, now that I have seen you in person and seen you stil alive.'	30 ויאמר ישראל אל יוסף אמותה הפעם אחרי ראותי את פניך כי עודך חי
31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and his father's family, 'I shall go back and break the news toPharaoh. I shall tel him, "My brothers and my father's family who were in Canaan have come to me.	31 ויאמר יוסף אל אחיו ואל בית אביו אעלה ואגידה לפרעה ואמרה אליו אחי ובית אבי אשר בארץ כנען באו אלי
32 The men are shepherds and look after livestock, and they have brought their flocks and cattle and altheir possessions."	32 והאנשים רעי צאן כי אנשי מקנה היו וצאנם ובקרם וכל אשר להם הביאו
33 Thus, when Pharaoh summons you and asks, "What is your occupation?",	33 והיה כי יקרא לכם פרעה ואמר מה מעשיכם
34 you are to say, "Ever since our boyhood your servants have looked after livestock, we and ourfathers before us," so that you can stay in the Goshen region -- for the Egyptians have a horror of al shepherds.'	34 ואמרתם אנשי מקנה היו עבדיך מנעורינו ועד עתה גם אנחנו גם אבתינו בעבור תשבו בארץ גשן כי תועבת מצרים כל רעה צאן
