NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
It happened some time later that the king of Egypt's cup-bearer and his baker offended their masterthe king of Egypt.1 His ita gestis, accidit ut peccarent duo eunuchi, pincerna regis Ægypti, et pistor, domino suo.
Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cup-bearer and the chief baker,2 Iratusque contra eos Pharao (nam alter pincernis præerat, alter pistoribus),
and put them in custody in the house of the commander of the guard, in the gaol where Joseph was aprisoner.3 misit eos in carcerem principis militum, in quo erat vinctus et Joseph.
The commander of the guard assigned Joseph to them to attend to their wants, and they remained incustody for some time.4 At custos carceris tradidit eos Joseph, qui et ministrabat eis : aliquantulum temporis fluxerat, et illi in custodia tenebantur.
Now both of them had dreams on the same night, each with its own meaning for the cup-bearer andthe baker of the king of Egypt, who were prisoners in the gaol.5 Videruntque ambo somnium nocte una, juxta interpretationem congruam sibi :
When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they looked gloomy,6 ad quos cum introisset Joseph mane, et vidisset eos tristes,
and he asked the two officials who were in custody with him in his master's house, 'Why these sadlooks today?'7 sciscitatus est eos, dicens : Cur tristior est hodie solito facies vestra ?
They replied, 'We have each had a dream, but there is no one to interpret it.' 'Are not interpretationsGod's business?' Joseph asked them. 'Tel me about them.'8 Qui responderunt : Somnium vidimus, et non est qui interpretetur nobis. Dixitque ad eos Joseph : Numquid non Dei est interpretatio ? referte mihi quid videritis.
So the chief cup-bearer described his dream to Joseph, tel ing him, 'In my dream there was a vine infront of me.9 Narravit prior, præpositus pincernarum, somnium suum : Videbam coram me vitem,
On the vine were three branches; no sooner had it budded than it blossomed, and its clustersbecame ripe grapes.10 in qua erant tres propagines, crescere paulatim in gemmas, et post flores uvas maturescere :
I had Pharaoh's cup in my hand; I picked the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and putthe cup into Pharaoh's hand.'11 calicemque Pharaonis in manu mea : tuli ergo uvas, et expressi in calicem quem tenebam, et tradidi poculum Pharaoni.
'This is what it means,' Joseph told him. 'The three branches are three days.12 Respondit Joseph : Hæc est interpretatio somnii : tres propagines, tres adhuc dies sunt :
In another three days Pharaoh wil lift up your head by restoring you to your position. Then you wilhand Pharaoh his cup, as you did before, when you were his cup-bearer.13 post quos recordabitur Pharao ministerii tui, et restituet te in gradum pristinum : dabisque ei calicem juxta officium tuum, sicut ante facere consueveras.
But be sure to remember me when things go wel with you, and keep faith with me by kindlyreminding Pharaoh about me, to get me out of this house.14 Tantum memento mei, cum bene tibi fuerit, et facias mecum misericordiam : ut suggeras Pharaoni ut educat me de isto carcere :
I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews in the first place, and even here I have done nothingto warrant being put in the dungeon.'15 quia furto sublatus sum de terra Hebræorum, et hic innocens in lacum missus sum.
The chief baker, seeing that the interpretation had been favourable, said to Joseph, 'I too had adream; there were three wicker trays on my head.16 Videns pistorum magister quod prudenter somnium dissolvisset, ait : Et ego vidi somnium : quod tria canistra farinæ haberem super caput meum :
In the top tray there were al kinds of pastries for Pharaoh, such as a baker might make, and thebirds were eating them off the tray on my head.'17 et in uno canistro quod erat excelsius, portare me omnes cibos qui fiunt arte pistoria, avesque comedere ex eo.
Joseph replied as fol ows, 'This is what it means: the three trays are three days.18 Respondit Joseph : Hæc est interpretatio somnii : tria canistra, tres adhuc dies sunt :
In another three days Pharaoh wil lift up your head by hanging you on a gallows, and the birds willeat the flesh off your bones.'19 post quos auferet Pharao caput tuum, ac suspendet te in cruce, et lacerabunt volucres carnes tuas.
And so it happened; the third day was Pharaoh's birthday and he gave a banquet for al his officials.Of his officials he lifted up the head of the chief cup-bearer and the chief baker,20 Exinde dies tertius natalitius Pharaonis erat : qui faciens grande convivium pueris suis, recordatus est inter epulas magistri pincernarum, et pistorum principis.
the chief cup-bearer by restoring him to his cup-bearing, so that he again handed Pharaoh his cup;21 Restituitque alterum in locum suum, ut porrigeret ei poculum :
and by hanging the chief baker, as Joseph had explained to them.22 alterum suspendit in patibulo, ut conjectoris veritas probaretur.
But the chief cup-bearer did not remember Joseph; he had forgotten him.23 Et tamen succedentibus prosperis, præpositus pincernarum oblitus est interpretis sui.
