NEW JERUSALEMSAGRADA BIBLIA
It happened some time later that the king of Egypt's cup-bearer and his baker offended their masterthe king of Egypt.1 Depois disto, aconteceu que o copeiro e o padeiro do rei do Egito ofenderam o seu senhor.
Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cup-bearer and the chief baker,2 O faraó, encolerizado contra os seus dois oficiais, o copeiro-mor e o padeiro-mor,
and put them in custody in the house of the commander of the guard, in the gaol where Joseph was aprisoner.3 mandou-os encarcerar na casa do chefe da guarda, na prisão onde se encontrava detido José.
The commander of the guard assigned Joseph to them to attend to their wants, and they remained incustody for some time.4 O chefe da guarda associou-lhes José para os servir. Havia já um certo tempo que estavam detidos,
Now both of them had dreams on the same night, each with its own meaning for the cup-bearer andthe baker of the king of Egypt, who were prisoners in the gaol.5 quando os dois prisioneiros, o copeiro e o padeiro do rei do Egito, tiveram um sonho numa mesma noite, cada um o seu, com seu sentido particular.
When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they looked gloomy,6 Quando José voltou junto deles no dia seguinte pela manhã, viu que estavam tristes.
and he asked the two officials who were in custody with him in his master's house, 'Why these sadlooks today?'7 Perguntou então aos oficiais do faraó, detidos com ele na casa do seu senhor: "Por que tendes hoje um ar sombrio?"
They replied, 'We have each had a dream, but there is no one to interpret it.' 'Are not interpretationsGod's business?' Joseph asked them. 'Tel me about them.'8 "Tivemos um sonho, responderam; e não há ninguém para no-los interpretar." "Porventura, não pertence a Deus, replicou José, a interpretação dos sonhos? Rogo-vos que mos conteis."
So the chief cup-bearer described his dream to Joseph, tel ing him, 'In my dream there was a vine infront of me.9 E o copeiro-mor contou seu sonho a José: "Em meu sonho, disse ele, vi uma cepa que estava diante de mim,
On the vine were three branches; no sooner had it budded than it blossomed, and its clustersbecame ripe grapes.10 e nesta cepa três varas, que pareciam brotar; saiu uma flor e seus cachos deram uvas maduras.
I had Pharaoh's cup in my hand; I picked the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and putthe cup into Pharaoh's hand.'11 Eu tinha na mão a taça do faraó; tomei as uvas e espremi-as na taça, que entreguei na mão do faraó."
'This is what it means,' Joseph told him. 'The three branches are three days.12 José disse-lhe: "Eis o significado do teu sonho: as três varas são três dias.
In another three days Pharaoh wil lift up your head by restoring you to your position. Then you wilhand Pharaoh his cup, as you did before, when you were his cup-bearer.13 Dentro de três dias, o faraó te reabilitará em tuas funções. Apresentarás ao faraó sua taça, como o fazias antes, quando eras seu copeiro.
But be sure to remember me when things go wel with you, and keep faith with me by kindlyreminding Pharaoh about me, to get me out of this house.14 Quando fores feliz, lembra-te de mim e faze-me o favor de recomendar-me ao faraó, para que ele me tire desta prisão.
I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews in the first place, and even here I have done nothingto warrant being put in the dungeon.'15 Porque é por um rapto que fui tirado da terra dos hebreus, e aqui, igualmente, eu nada fiz para merecer a prisão."
The chief baker, seeing that the interpretation had been favourable, said to Joseph, 'I too had adream; there were three wicker trays on my head.16 O padeiro-mor, vendo que José tinha dado uma boa interpretação, disse-lhe: "Eu também, em meu sonho, levava sobre minha cabeça três cestas de pão branco.
In the top tray there were al kinds of pastries for Pharaoh, such as a baker might make, and thebirds were eating them off the tray on my head.'17 Nada de cima, havia toda a sorte de manjares para o faraó; mas as aves do céu comiam-nas na cesta que estava sobre minha cabeça."
Joseph replied as fol ows, 'This is what it means: the three trays are three days.18 "Eis, disse José, o que isto significa: as três cestas são três dias.
In another three days Pharaoh wil lift up your head by hanging you on a gallows, and the birds willeat the flesh off your bones.'19 Dentro de três dias, o faraó levantará a tua cabeça: ele te suspenderá numa forca, e as aves devorarão a tua carne."
And so it happened; the third day was Pharaoh's birthday and he gave a banquet for al his officials.Of his officials he lifted up the head of the chief cup-bearer and the chief baker,20 No terceiro dia, celebrava-se o aniversário natalício do faraó, e ele ofereceu um banquete todo o seu pessoal. Ele levantou a cabeça do copeiro-mor, no meio de todos os seus servos:
the chief cup-bearer by restoring him to his cup-bearing, so that he again handed Pharaoh his cup;21 restabeleceu no seu cargo o copeiro-mor, que apresentou novamente a taça ao faraó,
and by hanging the chief baker, as Joseph had explained to them.22 e mandou suspender no patíbulo o padeiro-mor, segundo a interpretação que José lhes havia dado.
But the chief cup-bearer did not remember Joseph; he had forgotten him.23 Mas o copeiro-mor não pensou mais em José; esqueceu-o.
