Genesis 4

NEW JERUSALEM	NOVA VULGATA
1 The man had intercourse with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. 'I have acquireda man with the help of Yahweh,' she said.	1 Adam vero cognovit Evam uxo rem suam, quae concepit et peperit Cain dicens: “Acquisivi virum per Dominum”.
2 She gave birth to a second child, Abel, the brother of Cain. Now Abel became a shepherd and keptflocks, while Cain tilled the soil.	2 Rursusque peperit fratrem eius Abel. Et fuit Abel pastor ovium et Cain agricola.
3 Time passed and Cain brought some of the produce of the soil as an offering for Yahweh,	3 Factum est autem post aliquot dies ut offerret Cain de fructibus agri munus Domino.
4 while Abel for his part brought the first-born of his flock and some of their fat as wel . Yahweh lookedwith favour on Abel and his offering.	4 Abel quoque obtulit de primogenitis gregis sui et de adipibus eorum. Et respexit Dominus ad Abel et ad munus eius,
5 But he did not look with favour on Cain and his offering, and Cain was very angry and downcast.	5 ad Cain vero et ad munus illius non respexit. Iratusque est Cain vehementer, et concidit vultus eius.
6 Yahweh asked Cain, 'Why are you angry and downcast?	6 Dixitque Dominus ad eum: “Quare iratus es, et cur concidit facies tua?
7 If you are doing right, surely you ought to hold your head high! But if you are not doing right, Sin iscrouching at the door hungry to get you. You can still master him.'	7 Nonne si bene egeris, vultum attolles? Sin autem male, in foribus peccatum insidiabitur, et ad te erit appetitus eius, tu autem dominaberis illius”.
8 Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let us go out'; and while they were in the open country, Cain set on hisbrother Abel and killed him.	8 Dixitque Cain ad Abel fratrem suum: “Egrediamur foras”. Cumque essent in agro, consurrexit Cain adversus Abel fratrem suum et interfecit eum.
9 Yahweh asked Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' 'I do not know,' he replied. 'Am I my brother'sguardian?'	9 Et ait Dominus ad Cain: “Ubi est Abel frater tuus?”. Qui respondit: “Nescio. Num custos fratris mei sum ego?”.
10 'What have you done?' Yahweh asked. 'Listen! Your brother's blood is crying out to me from theground.	10 Dixitque ad eum: “Quid fecisti? Vox sanguinis fratris tui clamat ad me de agro.
11 Now be cursed and banned from the ground that has opened its mouth to receive your brother's bloodat your hands.	11 Nunc igitur maledictus eris procul ab agro, qui aperuit os suum et suscepit sanguinem fratris tui de manu tua!
12 When you til the ground it wil no longer yield up its strength to you. A restless wanderer you wil beon earth.'	12 Cum operatus fueris eum, amplius non dabit tibi fructus suos; vagus et profugus eris super terram”.
13 Cain then said to Yahweh, 'My punishment is greater than I can bear.	13 Dixitque Cain ad Dominum: “Maior est poena mea quam ut portem eam.
14 Look, today you drive me from the surface of the earth. I must hide from you, and be a restlesswanderer on earth. Why, whoever comes across me wil kill me!'	14 Ecce eicis me hodie a facie agri, et a facie tua abscondar et ero vagus et profugus in terra; omnis igitur, qui invenerit me, occidet me”.
15 'Very wel , then,' Yahweh replied, 'whoever kil s Cain wil suffer a sevenfold vengeance.' So Yahwehput a mark on Cain, so that no one coming across him would kil him.	15 Dixitque ei Dominus: “Nequaquam ita fiet, sed omnis qui occiderit Cain, septuplum punietur!”. Posuitque Dominus Cain signum, ut non eum interficeret omnis qui invenisset eum.
16 Cain left Yahweh's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.	16 Egressusque Cain a facie Domini habitavit in terra Nod ad orientalem plagam Eden.
17 Cain had intercourse with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. He became thefounder of a city and gave the city the name of his son Enoch.	17 Cognovit autem Cain uxorem suam, quae concepit et peperit Henoch. Et aedificavit civitatem vocavitque nomen eius ex nomine filii sui Henoch.
18 Enoch fathered Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael; Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushaelfathered Lamech.	18 Porro Henoch genuit Irad, et Irad genuit Maviael, et Maviael genuit Mathusael, et Mathusael genuit Lamech.
19 Lamech married two women: the name of the first was Adah and the name of the second was Zil ah.	19 Qui accepit uxores duas: nomen uni Ada et nomen alteri Sella.
20 Adah gave birth to Jabal: he was the ancestor of tent-dwelling herdsmen.	20 Genuitque Ada Iabel, qui fuit pater habitantium in tentoriis atque pastorum.
21 His brother's name was Jubal: he was the ancestor of al who play the harp and the pipe.	21 Et nomen fratris eius Iubal; ipse fuit pater omnium canentium cithara et organo.
22 As for Zil ah, she gave birth to Tubal-Cain: he was the ancestor of al who work copper and iron.Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.	22 Sella quoque genuit Tubalcain, qui fuit malleator et faber in cuncta opera aeris et ferri. Soror vero Tubalcain Noema.
23 Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zil ah, hear my voice, wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: Ikil ed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me.	23 Dixitque Lamech uxoribus suis: “Ada et Sella, audite vocem meam; uxores Lamech, auscultate sermonem meum: occidi virum pro vulnere meo et adulescentulum pro livore meo;
24 Sevenfold vengeance for Cain, but seventy-sevenfold for Lamech.	24 septuplum ultio dabitur de Cain, de Lamech vero septuagies septies”.
25 Adam had intercourse with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she named Seth, 'becauseGod has granted me other offspring', she said, 'in place of Abel, since Cain has kil ed him.'	25 Cognovit quoque Adam uxorem suam, et peperit filium vocavitque nomen eius Seth dicens: “Posuit mihi Deus semen aliud pro Abel, quem occidit Cain”.
26 A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. This man was the first to invoke the nameYahweh.	26 Sed et Seth natus est filius, quem vocavit Enos. Tunc coeperunt invocare nomen Domini.
