1 The man had intercourse with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. 'I have acquireda man with the help of Yahweh,' she said.	1 L’homme s’unit à Ève, sa femme, elle conçut et enfanta Caïn. Elle dit à cette occasion: “Je me suis acquis un homme, grâce à Yahvé.”
2 She gave birth to a second child, Abel, the brother of Cain. Now Abel became a shepherd and keptflocks, while Cain tilled the soil.	2 Ensuite elle enfanta Abel, le frère de Caïn. Abel était berger de petit bétail et son frère Caïn cultivait le sol.
3 Time passed and Cain brought some of the produce of the soil as an offering for Yahweh,	3 Il arriva quelque temps plus tard que Caïn apporta des fruits du sol pour les offrir à Yahvé.
4 while Abel for his part brought the first-born of his flock and some of their fat as wel . Yahweh lookedwith favour on Abel and his offering.	4 Abel de son côté présenta les premiers-nés de son petit bétail avec leur graisse. Yahvé regarda avec plaisir Abel et son offrande,
5 But he did not look with favour on Cain and his offering, and Cain was very angry and downcast.	5 mais il ne fit pas attention à Caïn et à son offrande. Caïn fut très en colère et son visage se durcit.
6 Yahweh asked Cain, 'Why are you angry and downcast?	6 Alors Yahvé dit à Caïn: “Pourquoi es-tu en colère, pourquoi ton visage est-il si dur?
7 If you are doing right, surely you ought to hold your head high! But if you are not doing right, Sin iscrouching at the door hungry to get you. You can still master him.'	7 Si tu fais ce qui est bien, tu pourras relever la tête, mais si tu n’agis pas bien, le péché est couché devant ta porte prêt à se jeter sur toi; c’est à toi de le dominer.”
8 Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let us go out'; and while they were in the open country, Cain set on hisbrother Abel and killed him.	8 Caïn dit à Abel son frère: “Allons dans la campagne.” Et comme ils étaient dans la campagne, Caïn se jeta sur son frère Abel et le tua.
9 Yahweh asked Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' 'I do not know,' he replied. 'Am I my brother'sguardian?'	9 Yahvé dit à Caïn: “Où est ton frère Abel?” Celui-ci répondit: “Je n’en sais rien; suis-je le gardien de mon frère?”
10 'What have you done?' Yahweh asked. 'Listen! Your brother's blood is crying out to me from theground.	10 Il dit: “Qu’as-tu fait? Un cri monte du sol vers moi, c’est le sang de ton frère!
11 Now be cursed and banned from the ground that has opened its mouth to receive your brother's bloodat your hands.	11 Sois maudit maintenant de par le sol qui a ouvert sa bouche pour recevoir le sang de ton frère.
12 When you til the ground it wil no longer yield up its strength to you. A restless wanderer you wil beon earth.'	12 Lorsque tu cultiveras le sol, il ne te donnera plus ses produits. Tu iras errant comme un fuyard sur la terre.”
13 Cain then said to Yahweh, 'My punishment is greater than I can bear.	13 Caïn dit à Yahvé: “Ma condamnation est trop dure, je ne peux la porter!
14 Look, today you drive me from the surface of the earth. I must hide from you, and be a restlesswanderer on earth. Why, whoever comes across me wil kill me!'	14 Regarde, tu me chasses aujourd’hui du sol cultivable et je devrai me cacher loin de toi. J’irai errant comme un fuyard sur la terre et quiconque me rencontrera pourra me tuer.”
15 'Very wel , then,' Yahweh replied, 'whoever kil s Cain wil suffer a sevenfold vengeance.' So Yahwehput a mark on Cain, so that no one coming across him would kil him.	15 Yahvé lui dit: “Eh bien, si quelqu’un tue Caïn, Caïn sera vengé sept fois!” Alors Yahvé mit un signe sur Caïn pour qu’il ne soit pas frappé par le premier venu.
16 Cain left Yahweh's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.	16 Caïn s’éloigna de devant Dieu et il habita au pays de Nod, à l’orient d’Éden.
17 Cain had intercourse with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. He became thefounder of a city and gave the city the name of his son Enoch.	17 Caïn s’unit à sa femme, elle conçut et enfanta Hénok. Puis il construisit une ville et lui donna le nom de son fils Hénok.
18 Enoch fathered Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael; Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushaelfathered Lamech.	18 Hénok eut un fils, Irad, et Irad engendra Méhouyaël. Méhouyaël engendra Métouchaël et Métouchaël engendra Lamek.
19 Lamech married two women: the name of the first was Adah and the name of the second was Zil ah.	19 Lamek prit deux femmes, la première s’appelait Ada et la seconde s’appelait Sila.
20 Adah gave birth to Jabal: he was the ancestor of tent-dwelling herdsmen.	20 Ada enfanta Yabal, il fut le père de ceux qui vivent sous la tente parmi les troupeaux.
21 His brother's name was Jubal: he was the ancestor of al who play the harp and the pipe.	21 Le nom de son frère était Youbal, il fut le père de tous ceux qui jouent de la lyre et de la flûte.
22 As for Zil ah, she gave birth to Tubal-Cain: he was the ancestor of al who work copper and iron.Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.	22 De son côté, Sila enfanta Toubal-Caïn, il fut le père de tous ceux qui travaillent le cuivre et le fer. La sœur de Toubal-Caïn était Naama.
23 Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zil ah, hear my voice, wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: Ikil ed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me.	23 Lamek dit à ses femmes Ada et Sila: “Écoutez ma voix, femmes de Lamek, prêtez l’oreille à ma parole: J’ai tué un homme pour une blessure, un garçon pour une égratignure.
24 Sevenfold vengeance for Cain, but seventy-sevenfold for Lamech.	24 Car si Caïn est vengé sept fois, Lamek le sera soixante-dix-sept fois.”
25 Adam had intercourse with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she named Seth, 'becauseGod has granted me other offspring', she said, 'in place of Abel, since Cain has kil ed him.'	25 Adam s’unit à sa femme, elle enfanta un fils et lui donna le nom de Seth, car, dit-elle: “Dieu m’a donné une autre descendance à la place d’Abel que Caïn a tué.”
26 A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. This man was the first to invoke the nameYahweh.	26 Seth eut un fils et il lui donna le nom d’Énos. Celui-ci fut le premier à invoquer Yahvé par son nom.
