NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
The man had intercourse with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. 'I have acquireda man with the help of Yahweh,' she said.1 And Adam knew Eve his wife: who conceived and brought forth Cain, saying: I have gotten a man through God.
She gave birth to a second child, Abel, the brother of Cain. Now Abel became a shepherd and keptflocks, while Cain tilled the soil.2 And again she brought forth his brother Abel. And Abel was a shepherd, and Cain a husbandman.
Time passed and Cain brought some of the produce of the soil as an offering for Yahweh,3 And it came to pass after many days, that Cain offered, of the fruits of the earth, gifts to the Lord.
while Abel for his part brought the first-born of his flock and some of their fat as wel . Yahweh lookedwith favour on Abel and his offering.4 Abel also offered of the firstlings of his flock, and of their fat: and the Lord had respect to Abel, and to his offerings.
But he did not look with favour on Cain and his offering, and Cain was very angry and downcast.5 But to Cain and his offerings he had no respect: and Cain was exceedingly angry, and his countenance fell.
Yahweh asked Cain, 'Why are you angry and downcast?6 And the Lord said to him: Why art thou angry? and why is thy countenance fallen?
If you are doing right, surely you ought to hold your head high! But if you are not doing right, Sin iscrouching at the door hungry to get you. You can still master him.'7 If thou do well, shalt thou not receive? but if ill, shall not sin forthwith be present at the door? but the lust thereof shall be under thee, and thou shalt have dominion over it.
Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let us go out'; and while they were in the open country, Cain set on hisbrother Abel and killed him.8 And Cain said to Abel his brother: Let us go forth abroad. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and slew him.
Yahweh asked Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' 'I do not know,' he replied. 'Am I my brother'sguardian?'9 And the Lord said to Cain: Where is thy brother Abel? And he answered, I know not: am I my brother's keeper?
'What have you done?' Yahweh asked. 'Listen! Your brother's blood is crying out to me from theground.10 And he said to him: What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth to me from the earth.
Now be cursed and banned from the ground that has opened its mouth to receive your brother's bloodat your hands.11 Now, therefore, cursed shalt thou be upon the earth, which hath opened her mouth and received the blood of thy brother at thy hand,
When you til the ground it wil no longer yield up its strength to you. A restless wanderer you wil beon earth.'12 When thou shalt till it, it shall not yield to thee its fruit: a fugitive and vagabond shalt thou be upon the earth.
Cain then said to Yahweh, 'My punishment is greater than I can bear.13 And Cain said to the Lord: My iniquity is greater than that I may deserve pardon.
Look, today you drive me from the surface of the earth. I must hide from you, and be a restlesswanderer on earth. Why, whoever comes across me wil kill me!'14 Behold thou dost cast me out this day from the face of the earth, and I shall be hidden from thy face, and I shall be a vagabond and a fugitive on the earth: everyone, therefore, that findeth me, shall kill me.
'Very wel , then,' Yahweh replied, 'whoever kil s Cain wil suffer a sevenfold vengeance.' So Yahwehput a mark on Cain, so that no one coming across him would kil him.15 And the Lord said to him: No, it shall not be so: but whosoever shall kill Cain, shall be punished sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, that whosoever found him should not kill him.
Cain left Yahweh's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.16 And Cain went out from the face of the Lord, and dwelt as a fugitive on the earth, at the east side of Eden.
Cain had intercourse with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. He became thefounder of a city and gave the city the name of his son Enoch.17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived, and brought forth Henoch: and he built a city, and called the name thereof by the name of his son Henoch.
Enoch fathered Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael; Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushaelfathered Lamech.18 And Henoch begot Irad, and Irad begot Maviael, and Maviael begot Mathusael, and Mathusael begot Lamech:
Lamech married two women: the name of the first was Adah and the name of the second was Zil ah.19 Who took two wives: the name of the one was Ada, and the name of the other was Sella.
Adah gave birth to Jabal: he was the ancestor of tent-dwelling herdsmen.20 And Ada brought forth Jabel: who was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of herdsmen.
His brother's name was Jubal: he was the ancestor of al who play the harp and the pipe.21 And his brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of them that play upon the harp and the organs.
As for Zil ah, she gave birth to Tubal-Cain: he was the ancestor of al who work copper and iron.Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.22 Sella also brought forth Tubalcain, who was a hammerer and artificer in every work of brass and iron. And the sister of Tubalcain was Noema.
Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zil ah, hear my voice, wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: Ikil ed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me.23 And Lamech said to his wives Ada and Sell: Hear my voice, ye wives of Lamech, hearken to my speech: for I have slain a man to the wounding of myself, and a stripling to my own bruising.
Sevenfold vengeance for Cain, but seventy-sevenfold for Lamech.24 Sevenfold vengeance shall be taken for Cain: but for Lamech seventy times sevenfold.
Adam had intercourse with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she named Seth, 'becauseGod has granted me other offspring', she said, 'in place of Abel, since Cain has kil ed him.'25 Adam also knew his wife again: and she brought forth a son, and called his name Seth, saying: God hath given me another seed, for Abel whom Cain slew.
A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. This man was the first to invoke the nameYahweh.26 But to Seth also was born a son, whom he called Enos; this man began to call upon the name of the Lord.
