Genesis 4

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 The man had intercourse with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. 'I have acquireda man with the help of Yahweh,' she said.	1 L'homme connut Eve, sa femme; elle conçut et enfanta Caïn et elle dit: "J'ai acquis un homme de parYahvé."
2 She gave birth to a second child, Abel, the brother of Cain. Now Abel became a shepherd and keptflocks, while Cain tilled the soil.	2 Elle donna aussi le jour à Abel, frère de Caïn. Or Abel devint pasteur de petit bétail et Caïn cultivaitle sol.
3 Time passed and Cain brought some of the produce of the soil as an offering for Yahweh,	3 Le temps passa et il advint que Caïn présenta des produits du sol en offrande à Yahvé,
4 while Abel for his part brought the first-born of his flock and some of their fat as wel . Yahweh lookedwith favour on Abel and his offering.	4 et qu'Abel, de son côté, offrit des premiers-nés de son troupeau, et même de leur graisse. Or Yahvéagréa Abel et son offrande.
5 But he did not look with favour on Cain and his offering, and Cain was very angry and downcast.	5 Mais il n'agréa pas Caïn et son offrande, et Caïn en fut très irrité et eut le visage abattu.
6 Yahweh asked Cain, 'Why are you angry and downcast?	6 Yahvé dit à Caïn: "Pourquoi es-tu irrité et pourquoi ton visage est-il abattu?
7 If you are doing right, surely you ought to hold your head high! But if you are not doing right, Sin iscrouching at the door hungry to get you. You can still master him.'	7 Si tu es bien disposé, ne relèveras-tu pas la tête? Mais si tu n'es pas bien disposé, le péché n'est-il pasà la porte, une bête tapie qui te convoite? pourras-tu la dominer?"
8 Cain said to his brother Abel, 'Let us go out'; and while they were in the open country, Cain set on hisbrother Abel and killed him.	8 Cependant Caïn dit à son frère Abel: "Allons dehors", et, comme ils étaient en pleine campagne,Caïn se jeta sur son frère Abel et le tua.
9 Yahweh asked Cain, 'Where is your brother Abel?' 'I do not know,' he replied. 'Am I my brother'sguardian?'	9 Yahvé dit à Caïn: "Où est ton frère Abel?" Il répondit: "Je ne sais pas. Suis-je le gardien de monfrère?"
10 'What have you done?' Yahweh asked. 'Listen! Your brother's blood is crying out to me from theground.	10 Yahvé reprit: "Qu'as-tu fait! Ecoute le sang de ton frère crier vers moi du sol!
11 Now be cursed and banned from the ground that has opened its mouth to receive your brother's bloodat your hands.	11 Maintenant, sois maudit et chassé du sol fertile qui a ouvert la bouche pour recevoir de ta main lesang de ton frère.
12 When you til the ground it wil no longer yield up its strength to you. A restless wanderer you wil beon earth.'	12 Si tu cultives le sol, il ne te donnera plus son produit: tu seras un errant parcourant la terre."
13 Cain then said to Yahweh, 'My punishment is greater than I can bear.	13 Alors Caïn dit à Yahvé: "Ma peine est trop lourde à porter.
14 Look, today you drive me from the surface of the earth. I must hide from you, and be a restlesswanderer on earth. Why, whoever comes across me wil kill me!'	14 Vois! Tu me bannis aujourd'hui du sol fertile, je devrai me cacher loin de ta face et je serai unerrant parcourant la terre: mais, le premier venu me tuera!"
15 'Very wel , then,' Yahweh replied, 'whoever kil s Cain wil suffer a sevenfold vengeance.' So Yahwehput a mark on Cain, so that no one coming across him would kil him.	15 Yahvé lui répondit: "Aussi bien, si quelqu'un tue Caïn, on le vengera sept fois" et Yahvé mit unsigne sur Caïn, afin que le premier venu ne le frappât point.
16 Cain left Yahweh's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.	16 Caïn se retira de la présence de Yahvé et séjourna au pays de Nod, à l'orient d'Eden.
17 Cain had intercourse with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. He became thefounder of a city and gave the city the name of his son Enoch.	17 Caïn connut sa femme, qui conçut et enfanta Hénok. Il devint un constructeur de ville et il donna àla ville le nom de son fils, Hénok.
18 Enoch fathered Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael; Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushaelfathered Lamech.	18 A Hénok naquit Irad, et Irad engendra Mehuyaël, et Mehuyaël engendra Metushaël, et Metushaëlengendra Lamek.
19 Lamech married two women: the name of the first was Adah and the name of the second was Zil ah.	19 Lamek prit deux femmes: le nom de la première était Ada et le nom de la seconde Cilla.
20 Adah gave birth to Jabal: he was the ancestor of tent-dwelling herdsmen.	20 Ada enfanta Yabal: il fut l'ancêtre de ceux qui vivent sous la tente et ont des troupeaux.
21 His brother's name was Jubal: he was the ancestor of al who play the harp and the pipe.	21 Le nom de son frère était Yubal: il fut l'ancêtre de tous ceux qui jouent de la lyre et du chalumeau.
22 As for Zil ah, she gave birth to Tubal-Cain: he was the ancestor of al who work copper and iron.Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.	22 De son côté, Cilla enfanta Tubal-Caïn: il fut l'ancêtre de tous les forgerons en cuivre et en fer; lasœur de Tubal-Caïn était Naama.
23 Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zil ah, hear my voice, wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: Ikil ed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me.	23 Lamek dit à ses femmes: "Ada et Cilla, entendez ma voix, femmes de Lamek, écoutez ma parole:J'ai tué un homme pour une blessure, un enfant pour une meurtrissure.
24 Sevenfold vengeance for Cain, but seventy-sevenfold for Lamech.	24 C'est que Caïn est vengé sept fois, mais Lamek, 77 fois!"
25 Adam had intercourse with his wife, and she gave birth to a son whom she named Seth, 'becauseGod has granted me other offspring', she said, 'in place of Abel, since Cain has kil ed him.'	25 Adam connut sa femme; elle enfanta un fils et lui donna le nom de Seth "car, dit-elle, Dieu m'aaccordé une autre descendanceà la place d'Abel, puisque Caïn l'a tué."
26 A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. This man was the first to invoke the nameYahweh.	26 Un fils naquit à Seth aussi, et il lui donna le nom d'Enosh. Celui-ci fut le premier à invoquer le nomde Yahvé.
