Abraham married another wife whose name was Keturah;1 Abraham vero aliam duxit uxorem nomine Ceturam :
and she bore him Zimram, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah.2 quæ peperit ei Zamran et Jecsan, et Madan, et Madian, et Jesboc, et Sue.
Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan, and the descendants of Dedan were the Asshurites, theLetushim and the Leummim.3 Jecsan quoque genuit Saba et Dadan. Filii Dadan fuerunt Assurim, et Latusim, et Loomin.
The descendants of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida and Eldaah. Al these were sons ofKeturah.4 At vero ex Madian ortus est Epha, et Opher, et Henoch, et Abida, et Eldaa : omnes hi filii Ceturæ.
Abraham left al his possessions to Isaac.5 Deditque Abraham cuncta quæ possederat, Isaac :
To the sons of his concubines Abraham made grants during his lifetime, sending them away from hisson Isaac eastward, to the Land of the East.6 filiis autem concubinarum largitus est munera, et separavit eos ab Isaac filio suo, dum adhuc ipse viveret, ad plagam orientalem.
The number of years Abraham lived was a hundred and seventy-five.7 Fuerunt autem dies vitæ Abrahæ, centum septuaginta quinque anni.
When Abraham had breathed his last, dying at a happy ripe age, old and ful of years, he wasgathered to his people.8 Et deficiens mortuus est in senectute bona, provectæque ætatis et plenus dierum : congregatusque est ad populum suum.
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah facing Mamre, in the field of Ephronthe Hittite son of Zohar.9 Et sepelierunt eum Isaac et Ismaël filii sui in spelunca duplici, quæ sita est in agro Ephron filii Seor Hethæi, e regione Mambre,
This was the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites, and Abraham and his wife Sarah wereburied there.10 quem emerat a filiis Heth : ibi sepultus est ipse, et Sara uxor ejus.
After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac. Isaac settled near the wel of Lahai Roi.11 Et post obitum illius benedixit Deus Isaac filio ejus, qui habitabat juxta puteum nomine Viventis et videntis.
These are the descendants of Ishmael son of Abraham by Hagar, Sarah's Egyptian slave-girl.12 Hæ sunt generationes Ismaël filii Abrahæ, quem peperit ei Agar Ægyptia, famula Saræ : et
These are the names of the sons of Ishmael by name and line: Ishmael's first-born was Nebaioth;then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,13 hæc nomina filiorum ejus in vocabulis et generationibus suis. Primogenitus Ismaëlis Nabaioth, deinde Cedar, et Adbeel, et Mabsam,
Mishma, Dumah, Massa,14 Masma quoque, et Duma, et Massa,
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah.15 Hadar, et Thema, et Jethur, et Naphis, et Cedma.
These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, according to their settlements andencampments, twelve chiefs of as many tribes.16 Isti sunt filii Ismaëlis : et hæc nomina per castella et oppida eorum, duodecim principes tribuum suarum.
The number of years Ishmael lived was one hundred and thirty-seven. When he breathed his lastand died, he was gathered to his people.17 Et facti sunt anni vitæ Ismaëlis centum triginta septem, deficiensque mortuus est, et appositus ad populum suum.
He lived in the territory stretching from Havilah-by-Shur just outside Egypt on the way to Assyria, andhe held his own against all his kinsmen.18 Habitavit autem ab Hevila usque Sur, quæ respicit Ægyptum introëuntibus Assyrios ; coram cunctis fratribus suis obiit.
This is the story of Isaac son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac.19 Hæ quoque sunt generationes Isaac filii Abraham : Abraham genuit Isaac :
Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah the daughter of Bethuel the Aramaean ofPaddan-Aram, and sister of Laban the Aramaean.20 qui cum quadraginta esset annorum, duxit uxorem Rebeccam filiam Bathuelis Syri de Mesopotamia, sororem Laban.
Isaac prayed to Yahweh on behalf of his wife, for she was barren. Yahweh heard his prayer, and hiswife Rebekah conceived.21 Deprecatusque est Isaac Dominum pro uxore sua, eo quod esset sterilis : qui exaudivit eum, et dedit conceptum Rebeccæ.
But the children inside her struggled so much that she said, 'If this is the way of it, why go on living?'So she went to consult Yahweh,22 Sed collidebantur in utero ejus parvuli ; quæ ait : Si sic mihi futurum erat, quid necesse fuit concipere ? perrexitque ut consuleret Dominum.
and Yahweh said to her: There are two nations in your womb, your issue wil be two rival peoples. One nation wil have the mastery of the other, and the elder wil serve the younger.23 Qui respondens ait : Duæ gentes sunt in utero tuo,
et duo populi ex ventre tuo dividentur,
populusque populum superabit,
et major serviet minori.
When the time came for her confinement, there were indeed twins in her womb.24 Jam tempus pariendi advenerat, et ecce gemini in utero ejus reperti sunt.
The first to be born was red, altogether like a hairy cloak; so they named him Esau.25 Qui prior egressus est, rufus erat, et totus in morem pellis hispidus : vocatumque est nomen ejus Esau. Protinus alter egrediens, plantam fratris tenebat manu : et idcirco appellavit eum Jacob.
Then his brother was born, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so they named him Jacob. Isaac wassixty years old at the time of their birth.26 Sexagenarius erat Isaac quando nati sunt ei parvuli.
When the boys grew up Esau became a skil ed hunter, a man of the open country. Jacob on theother hand was a quiet man, staying at home among the tents.27 Quibus adultis, factus est Esau vir gnarus venandi, et homo agricola : Jacob autem vir simplex habitabat in tabernaculis.
Isaac preferred Esau, for he had a taste for wild game; but Rebekah preferred Jacob.28 Isaac amabat Esau, eo quod de venationibus illius vesceretur : et Rebecca diligebat Jacob.
Once, when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau returned from the countryside exhausted.29 Coxit autem Jacob pulmentum : ad quem cum venisset Esau de agro lassus,
Esau said to Jacob, 'Give me a mouthful of that red stuff there; I am exhausted' -- hence the namegiven to him, Edom.30 ait : Da mihi de coctione hac rufa, quia oppido lassus sum. Quam ob causam vocatum est nomen ejus Edom.
Jacob said, 'First, give me your birthright in exchange.'31 Cui dixit Jacob : Vende mihi primogenita tua.
Esau said, 'Here I am, at death's door; what use is a birthright to me?'32 Ille respondit : En morior, quid mihi proderunt primogenita ?
Then Jacob said, 'First give me your oath'; he gave him his oath and sold his birthright to Jacob.33 Ait Jacob : Jura ergo mihi. Juravit ei Esau et vendidit primogenita.
Then Jacob gave him some bread and lentil stew; he ate, drank, got up and went away. That was allEsau cared about his birthright.34 Et sic, accepto pane et lentis edulio, comedit et bibit, et abiit, parvipendens quod primogenita vendidisset.
