This is the story of Isaac son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac.19 Voici l'histoire d'Isaac fils d'Abraham. Abraham engendra Isaac.
Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah the daughter of Bethuel the Aramaean ofPaddan-Aram, and sister of Laban the Aramaean.20 Isaac avait 40 ans lorsqu'il épousa Rébecca, fille de Bétuel, l'Araméen de Paddân-Aram, et sœurde Laban l'Araméen.
Isaac prayed to Yahweh on behalf of his wife, for she was barren. Yahweh heard his prayer, and hiswife Rebekah conceived.21 Isaac implora Yahvé pour sa femme, car elle était stérile: Yahvé l'exauça et sa femme Rébeccadevint enceinte.
But the children inside her struggled so much that she said, 'If this is the way of it, why go on living?'So she went to consult Yahweh,22 Or les enfants se heurtaient en elle et elle dit: "S'il en est ainsi, à quoi bon vivre?" Elle alla doncconsulter Yahvé,
and Yahweh said to her: There are two nations in your womb, your issue wil be two rival peoples. One nation wil have the mastery of the other, and the elder wil serve the younger.23 et Yahvé lui dit: "Il y a deux nations en ton sein, deux peuples, issus de toi, se sépareront, unpeuple dominera un peuple, l'aîné servira le cadet."
When the time came for her confinement, there were indeed twins in her womb.24 Quand vint le temps de ses couches, voici qu'elle portait des jumeaux.
The first to be born was red, altogether like a hairy cloak; so they named him Esau.25 Le premier sortit: il était roux et tout entier comme un manteau de poils; on l'appela Esaü.
Then his brother was born, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so they named him Jacob. Isaac wassixty years old at the time of their birth.26 Ensuite sortit son frère et sa main tenait le talon d'Esaü; on l'appela Jacob. Isaac avait 60 ans àleur naissance.
When the boys grew up Esau became a skil ed hunter, a man of the open country. Jacob on theother hand was a quiet man, staying at home among the tents.27 Les garçons grandirent: Esaü devint un habile chasseur, courant la steppe, Jacob était un hommetranquille, demeurant sous les tentes.
Isaac preferred Esau, for he had a taste for wild game; but Rebekah preferred Jacob.28 Isaac préférait Esaü car le gibier était à son goût, mais Rébecca préférait Jacob.
Once, when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau returned from the countryside exhausted.29 Une fois, Jacob prépara un potage et Esaü revint de la campagne, épuisé.
Esau said to Jacob, 'Give me a mouthful of that red stuff there; I am exhausted' -- hence the namegiven to him, Edom.30 Esaü dit à Jacob: "Laisse-moi avaler ce roux, ce roux-là; je suis épuisé" -- C'est pourquoi on l'aappelé Edom. --
Jacob said, 'First, give me your birthright in exchange.'31 Jacob dit: "Vends-moi d'abord ton droit d'aînesse.
Esau said, 'Here I am, at death's door; what use is a birthright to me?'32 Esaü répondit: "Voici que je vais mourir, à quoi me servira le droit d'aînesse?"
Then Jacob said, 'First give me your oath'; he gave him his oath and sold his birthright to Jacob.33 Jacob reprit: "Prête-moi d'abord serment"; il lui prêta serment et vendit son droit d'aînesse àJacob.
Then Jacob gave him some bread and lentil stew; he ate, drank, got up and went away. That was allEsau cared about his birthright.34 Alors Jacob lui donna du pain et du potage de lentilles, il mangea et but, se leva et partit. C'esttout le cas qu'Esaü fit du droit d'aînesse.
