Abraham left al his possessions to Isaac.5 Abraham deeded everything that he owned to his son Isaac.
To the sons of his concubines Abraham made grants during his lifetime, sending them away from hisson Isaac eastward, to the Land of the East.6 To his sons by concubinage, however, he made grants while he was still living, as he sent them away eastward, to the land of Kedem, away from his son Isaac.
The number of years Abraham lived was a hundred and seventy-five.7 The whole span of Abraham's life was one hundred and seventy-five years.
When Abraham had breathed his last, dying at a happy ripe age, old and ful of years, he wasgathered to his people.8 Then he breathed his last, dying at a ripe old age, grown old after a full life; and he was taken to his kinsmen.
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah facing Mamre, in the field of Ephronthe Hittite son of Zohar.9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, son of Zohar the Hittite, which faces Mamre,

He lived in the territory stretching from Havilah-by-Shur just outside Egypt on the way to Assyria, andhe held his own against all his kinsmen.18 The Ishmaelites ranged from Havilah-by-Shur, which is on the border of Egypt, all the way to Asshur; and each of them pitched camp in opposition to his various kinsmen.
This is the story of Isaac son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac.19 This is the family history of Isaac, son of Abraham; Abraham had begotten Isaac.
Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah the daughter of Bethuel the Aramaean ofPaddan-Aram, and sister of Laban the Aramaean.20 Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.
Isaac prayed to Yahweh on behalf of his wife, for she was barren. Yahweh heard his prayer, and hiswife Rebekah conceived.21 Isaac entreated the LORD on behalf of his wife, since she was sterile. The LORD heard his entreaty, and Rebekah became pregnant.
But the children inside her struggled so much that she said, 'If this is the way of it, why go on living?'So she went to consult Yahweh,22 But the children in her womb jostled each other so much that she exclaimed, "If this is to be so, what good will it do me!" She went to consult the LORD,
and Yahweh said to her: There are two nations in your womb, your issue wil be two rival peoples. One nation wil have the mastery of the other, and the elder wil serve the younger.23 and he answered her: "Two nations are in your womb, two peoples are quarreling while still within you; But one shall surpass the other, and the older shall serve the younger."
When the time came for her confinement, there were indeed twins in her womb.24 When the time of her delivery came, there were twins in her womb.
The first to be born was red, altogether like a hairy cloak; so they named him Esau.25 The first to emerge was reddish, and his whole body was like a hairy mantle; so they named him Esau.
Then his brother was born, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so they named him Jacob. Isaac wassixty years old at the time of their birth.26 His brother came out next, gripping Esau's heel; so they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
When the boys grew up Esau became a skil ed hunter, a man of the open country. Jacob on theother hand was a quiet man, staying at home among the tents.27 As the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man who lived in the open; whereas Jacob was a simple man, who kept to his tents.
Isaac preferred Esau, for he had a taste for wild game; but Rebekah preferred Jacob.28 Isaac preferred Esau, because he was fond of game; but Rebekah preferred Jacob.
Once, when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau returned from the countryside exhausted.29 Once, when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the open, famished.
Esau said to Jacob, 'Give me a mouthful of that red stuff there; I am exhausted' -- hence the namegiven to him, Edom.30 He said to Jacob, "Let me gulp down some of that red stuff; I'm starving." (That is why he was called Edom.)
Jacob said, 'First, give me your birthright in exchange.'31 But Jacob replied, "First give me your birthright in exchange for it."
Esau said, 'Here I am, at death's door; what use is a birthright to me?'32 "Look," said Esau, "I'm on the point of dying. What good will any birthright do me?"
Then Jacob said, 'First give me your oath'; he gave him his oath and sold his birthright to Jacob.33 But Jacob insisted, "Swear to me first!" So he sold Jacob his birthright under oath.
Then Jacob gave him some bread and lentil stew; he ate, drank, got up and went away. That was allEsau cared about his birthright.34 Jacob then gave him some bread and the lentil stew; and Esau ate, drank, got up, and went his way. Esau cared little for his birthright.
