NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone,1 Obsecro igitur primo omnium fieri obsecrationes, orationes, postulationes, gratiarum actiones pro omnibus hominibus,
for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity.2 pro regibus et omnibus, qui in sublimitate sunt, ut quietam et tranquillam vitam agamus in omni pietate et castitate.
This is good and pleasing to God our savior,3 Hoc bonum est et acceptum coram salvatore nostro Deo,
who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.4 qui omnes homines vult salvos fieri et ad agnitionem veritatis venire.
For there is one God. There is also one mediator between God and the human race, Christ Jesus, himself human,5 Unus enim Deus, unus et mediator Dei et hominum, homo Christus Iesus,
who gave himself as ransom for all. This was the testimony at the proper time.6 qui dedit redemptionem semetipsum pro omnibus, testimonium temporibus suis;
For this I was appointed preacher and apostle (I am speaking the truth, I am not lying), teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.7 in quod positus sum ego praedicator et apostolus — veritatem dico, non mentior — doctor gentium in fide et veritate.
It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument.8 Volo ergo viros orare in omni loco levantes puras manus sine ira et disceptatione;
Similarly, (too,) women should adorn themselves with proper conduct, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hairstyles and gold ornaments, or pearls, or expensive clothes,9 similiter et mulieres in habitu ornato cum verecundia et sobrietate ornantes se, non in tortis crinibus et auro aut margaritis vel veste pretiosa,
but rather, as befits women who profess reverence for God, with good deeds.10 sed, quod decet mulieres, profitentes pietatem per opera bona.
A woman must receive instruction silently and under complete control.11 Mulier in tranquillitate discat cum omni subiectione;
I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. She must be quiet.12 docere autem mulieri non permitto neque dominari in virum, sed esse in tranquillitate.
For Adam was formed first, then Eve.13 Adam enim primus formatus est, deinde Eva;
Further, Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed.14 et Adam non est seductus, mulier autem seducta in praevaricatione fuit.
But she will be saved through motherhood, provided women persevere in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.15 Salvabitur autem per filiorum generationem, si permanserint in fide et dilectione et sanctificatione cum sobrietate.
