NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
As he was making his way out of the temple area one of his disciples said to him, "Look, teacher, what stones and what buildings!"1 As he was leaving the Temple one of his disciples said to him, 'Master, look at the size of thosestones! Look at the size of those buildings!'
Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? There will not be one stone left upon another that will not be thrown down."2 And Jesus said to him, 'You see these great buildings? Not a single stone wil be left on another;everything wil be pul ed down.'
As he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple area, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,3 And while he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, facing the Temple, Peter, James, John and Andrewquestioned him when they were by themselves,
"Tell us, when will this happen, and what sign will there be when all these things are about to come to an end?"4 'Tel us, when is this going to happen, and what sign wil there be that it is all about to take place?'
Jesus began to say to them, "See that no one deceives you.5 Then Jesus began to tel them, 'Take care that no one deceives you.
Many will come in my name saying, 'I am he,' and they will deceive many.6 Many wil come using my name and saying, "I am he," and they wil deceive many.
When you hear of wars and reports of wars do not be alarmed; such things must happen, but it will not yet be the end.7 When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this is something that must happen,but the end wil not be yet.
Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes from place to place and there will be famines. These are the beginnings of the labor pains.8 For nation wil fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There wil be earthquakes in variousplaces; there wil be famines. This is the beginning of the birth-pangs.
"Watch out for yourselves. They will hand you over to the courts. You will be beaten in synagogues. You will be arraigned before governors and kings because of me, as a witness before them.9 'Be on your guard: you wil be handed over to sanhedrins; you wil be beaten in synagogues; and you wil be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as evidence to them,
But the gospel must first be preached to all nations.10 since the gospel must first be proclaimed to al nations.
When they lead you away and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say. But say whatever will be given to you at that hour. For it will not be you who are speaking but the holy Spirit.11 'And when you are taken to be handed over, do not worry beforehand about what to say; no, saywhatever is given to you when the time comes, because it is not you who wil be speaking; it is the Holy Spirit.
Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.12 Brother wil betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will come forward against theirparents and have them put to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.13 You wil be universal y hated on account of my name; but anyone who stands firm to the end wil besaved.
"When you see the desolating abomination standing where he should not (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains,14 'When you see the appal ing abomination set up where it ought not to be (let the reader understand),then those in Judaea must escape to the mountains;
(and) a person on a housetop must not go down or enter to get anything out of his house,15 if a man is on the housetop, he must not come down or go inside to col ect anything from his house;
and a person in a field must not return to get his cloak.16 if a man is in the fields, he must not turn back to fetch his cloak.
Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days.17 Alas for those with child, or with babies at the breast, when those days come!
Pray that this does not happen in winter.18 Pray that this may not be in winter.
For those times will have tribulation such as has not been since the beginning of God's creation until now, nor ever will be.19 For in those days there will be great distress, unparalleled since God created the world, and such aswil never be again.
If the Lord had not shortened those days, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect whom he chose, he did shorten the days.20 And if the Lord had not shortened that time, no human being would have survived; but he did shortenthe time, for the sake of the elect whom he chose.
If anyone says to you then, 'Look, here is the Messiah! Look, there he is!' do not believe it.21 'And if anyone says to you then, "Look, here is the Christ" or, "Look, he is there," do not believe it;
False messiahs and false prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders in order to mislead, if that were possible, the elect.22 for false Christs and false prophets wil arise and produce signs and portents to deceive the elect, ifthat were possible.
Be watchful! I have told it all to you beforehand.23 You, therefore, must be on your guard. I have given you full warning.
"But in those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,24 'But in those days, after that time of distress, the sun wil be darkened, the moon wil not give its light,
and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.25 the stars will come falling out of the sky and the powers in the heavens wil be shaken.
And then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in the clouds' with great power and glory,26 And then they wil see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
and then he will send out the angels and gather (his) elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.27 And then he wil send the angels to gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the world tothe ends of the sky.
"Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.28 'Take the fig tree as a parable: as soon as its twigs grow supple and its leaves come out, you knowthat summer is near.
In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that he is near, at the gates.29 So with you when you see these things happening: know that he is near, right at the gates.
Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.30 In truth I tel you, before this generation has passed away al these things will have taken place.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.31 Sky and earth wil pass away, but my words wil not pass away.
"But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.32 'But as for that day or hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son; no one butthe Father.
Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.33 'Be on your guard, stay awake, because you never know when the time wil come.
It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch.34 It is like a man travel ing abroad: he has gone from his home, and left his servants in charge, eachwith his own work to do; and he has told the doorkeeper to stay awake.
Watch, therefore; you do not know when the lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning.35 So stay awake, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming, evening,midnight, cockcrow or dawn;
May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping.36 if he comes unexpectedly, he must not find you asleep.
What I say to you, I say to all: 'Watch!'"37 And what I am saying to you I say to al : Stay awake!'
