Matthew 23

1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples,	1 Allora Gesù volgendosi alle turbe e ai discepoli,
2 saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses.	2 disse: Sulla cattedra di Mosè si assisero gli Scribi e i Farisei;
3 Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.	3 osservate e fate adunque tutto ciò che vi diranno; ma non vogliate imitarli, chè dicono e non fanno.
4 They tie up heavy burdens (hard to carry) and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them.	4 Difatti, legan pesi grandi e insopportabili e ne carican le spalle della gente; ma essi non li vogliono neppure muovere con un dito.
5 All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.	5 Fanno poi tutte le loro opere per essere veduti: perciò portan più larghe le filatterie, più lunghe le frange:
6 They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues,	6 e amano i primi posti nei conviti, i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe
7 greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Rabbi.'	7 ed i saluti nelle piazze ed essere dalla gente chiamati maestri.
8 As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.' You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers.	8 Ma voi non vogliate essere chiamati maestri; perchè uno solo è il vostro Maestro, voi siete tutti fratelli.
9 Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven.	9 Nè chiamate alcuno padre sulla terra; perchè uno solo è il vostro Padre, quello che è nei cieli.
10 Do not be called 'Master'; you have but one master, the Messiah.	10 Nè fatevi chia mar guide; perchè l'unica vostra guida è il Cristo.
11 The greatest among you must be your servant.	11 Chi è maggiore tra di voi, sarà vostro ministro.
12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.	12 Chi si esalta sarà umiliato, chi si umilia sarà esaltato.
13 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the kingdom of heaven before human beings. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter.	13 Ma guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, perchè serrate in faccia alla gente il regno dei cieli; chè nè c'entrate voi, nè lasciate entrar chi è alla porta.
14 )	14 Guai a voi Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che divorate le case delle vedove, ostentando lunghe orazioni: per questo sarete giudicati più severamente.
15 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You traverse sea and land to make one convert, and when that happens you make him a child of Gehenna twice as much as yourselves.	15 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che viaggiate, per mare e per terra, a fare un proselito, e, fatto che sia lo rendete figlio dell'inferno il doppio di voi:
16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If one swears by the temple, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gold of the temple, one is obligated.'	16 Guai a voi, guide cieche, che dite: Se uno giura pel tempio non è niente; ma se uno giura per l'oro del tempio resta obbligato.
17 Blind fools, which is greater, the gold, or the temple that made the gold sacred?	17 Stolti e ciechi! E chi è da più, l'oro o il tempio che santifica l'oro?
18 And you say, 'If one swears by the altar, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gift on the altar, one is obligated.'	18 E se uno giura per l'altare non è niente, ma se uno giura per l'offerta che c'è sopra, resta obbligato.
19 You blind ones, which is greater, the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?	19 Ciechi! Chi è da più, l'offerta o l'altare che santifica l'offerta?
20 One who swears by the altar swears by it and all that is upon it;	20 Chi dunque giura per l'altare, giura per esso e per tutte le cose che vi stan sopra,
21 one who swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it;	21 e chi giura pel tempio, giura per esso e per chi lo abita,
22 one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it.	22 e chi giura per il cielo, giura per il trono di Dio e per chi ci siede.
23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and fidelity. (But) these you should have done, without neglecting the others.	23 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che pagate la decima della menta, dell'aneto e del cimino, ed avete trascurate le cose più essenziali della legge: la giustizia, la misericordia e la fede. Queste le cose che bisognava fare senza ometter quelle.
24 Blind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camel!	24 Guide cieche, scolate il moscerino, inghiottite il cammello!
25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence.	25 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che lavate il di fuori del bicchiere e del piatto; ma dentro siete pieni di rapina e d'immondezza.
26 Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.	26 Fariseo cieco, lava prima il di dentro del bicchiere e del piatto; sicché anche il di fuori diventi pulito.
27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and every kind of filth.	27 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che siete simili a sepolcri imbiancati, che di fuori paion belli, ma dentro son pieni d'ossa di morto e d'ogni putredine.
28 Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.	28 Così anche voi, di fuori apparite giusti alla gente; ma dentro siete pieni d'ipocrisia e d'iniquità.
29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous,	29 Guai a voi, Scribi e Farisei ipocriti, che fabbricate sepolcri ai profeti e abbellite le tombe dei giusti,
30 and you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets' blood.'	30 dicendo: Se fossimo vissuti ai tempi dei nostri padri, non saremmo stati loro complici nel sangue dei profeti.
31 Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets;	31 Così voi attestate contro voi stessi, di essere discendenti di coloro che uccisero i profeti.
32 now fill up what your ancestors measured out!	32 E voi colmate la misura dei padri vostri.
33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you flee from the judgment of Gehenna?	33 Serpenti, razza di vipere, come scamperete alla condanna dell'inferno?
34 Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and pursue from town to town,	34 Perciò, ecco io vi mando profeti e savi e Scribi, e di questi ne ucciderete, ne crocifìggerete e ne flagellerete nelle vostre sinagoghe, e li perseguiterete di città in città,
35 so that there may come upon you all the righteous blood shed upon earth, from the righteous blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.	35 finchè non venga su di voi tutto il sangue giusto, sparso sulla terra, dal sangue del giusto Abele fino a quello di Zaccaria, figlio di Barachia, che voi uccideste fra il tempio e l'altare.
36 Amen, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.	36 In verità vi dico: tutto ciò avverrà su questa generazione.
37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were unwilling!	37 Gerusalemme, Gerusalemme, che uccidi i profeti e lapidi quelli che ti sono inviati, quante volte io ho voluto radunare i tuoi figli come la chioccia raduna i suoi pulcini sotto le ali, e non hai voluto!
38 Behold, your house will be abandoned, desolate.	38 Ecco la vostra casa vi sarà lasciata deserta.
39 I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"	39 E vi dico: non mi vedrete più, finché non diciate: Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore.
