1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples,	1 Entonces Jesús se dirigió a la gente y a sus discípulos
2 saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses.	2 y les dijo: «En la cátedra de Moisés se han sentado los escribas y los fariseos.
3 Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.	3 Haced, pues, y observad todo lo que os digan; pero no imitéis su conducta, porque dicen y no hacen.
4 They tie up heavy burdens (hard to carry) and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them.	4 Atan cargas pesadas y las echan a las espaldas de la gente, pero ellos ni con el dedo quieren moverlas.
5 All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.	5 Todas sus obras las hacen para ser vistos por los hombres; se hacen bien anchas las filacterias y bien largas las orlas del manto;
6 They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues,	6 quieren el primer puesto en los banquetes y los primeros asientos en las sinagogas,
7 greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Rabbi.'	7 que se les salude en las plazas y que la gente les llame “Rabbí”.
8 As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.' You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers.	8 «Vosotros, en cambio, no os dejéis llamar “Rabbí”, porque uno solo es vuestro Maestro; y vosotros sois todos hermanos.
9 Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven.	9 Ni llaméis a nadie “Padre” vuestro en la tierra, porque uno solo es vuestro Padre: el del cielo.
10 Do not be called 'Master'; you have but one master, the Messiah.	10 Ni tampoco os dejéis llamar “Directores”, porque uno solo es vuestro Director: el Cristo.
11 The greatest among you must be your servant.	11 El mayor entre vosotros será vuestro servidor.
12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.	12 Pues el que se ensalce, será humillado; y el que se humille, será ensalzado.
13 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the kingdom of heaven before human beings. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter.	13 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que cerráis a los hombres el Reino de los Cielos! Vosotros ciertamente no entráis; y a los que están entrando no les dejáis entrar.
14 )
15 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You traverse sea and land to make one convert, and when that happens you make him a child of Gehenna twice as much as yourselves.	15 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que recorréis mar y tierra para hacer un prosélito, y, cuando llega a serlo, le hacéis hijo de condenación el doble que vosotros!
16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If one swears by the temple, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gold of the temple, one is obligated.'	16 «¡Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos, que decís: “Si uno jura por el Santuario, eso no es nada; mas si jura por el oro del Santuario, queda obligado!”
17 Blind fools, which is greater, the gold, or the temple that made the gold sacred?	17 ¡Insensatos y ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante, el oro, o el Santuario que hace sagrado el oro?
18 And you say, 'If one swears by the altar, it means nothing, but if one swears by the gift on the altar, one is obligated.'	18 Y también: “Si uno jura por el altar, eso no es nada; mas si jura por la ofrenda que está sobre él, queda obligado.”
19 You blind ones, which is greater, the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?	19 ¡Ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante, la ofrenda, o el altar que hace sagrada la ofrenda?
20 One who swears by the altar swears by it and all that is upon it;	20 Quien jura, pues, por el altar, jura por él y por todo lo que está sobre él.
21 one who swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it;	21 Quien jura por el Santuario, jura por él y por Aquel que lo habita.
22 one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it.	22 Y quien jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios y por Aquel que está sentado en él.
23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and fidelity. (But) these you should have done, without neglecting the others.	23 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que pagáis el diezmo de la menta, del aneto y del comino, y descuidáis lo más importante de la Ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fe! Esto es lo que había que practicar, aunque sin descuidar aquello.
24 Blind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camel!	24 ¡Guías ciegos, que coláis el mosquito y os tragáis el camello!
25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence.	25 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, que purificáis por fuera la copa y el plato, mientras por dentro están llenos de rapiña e intemperancia!
26 Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.	26 ¡Fariseo ciego, purifica primero por dentro la copa, para que también por fuera quede pura!
27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and every kind of filth.	27 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, pues sois semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados, que por fuera parecen bonitos, pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda inmundicia!
28 Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.	28 Así también vosotros, por fuera aparecéis justos ante los hombres, pero por dentro estáis llenos de hipocresía y de iniquidad.
29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous,	29 «¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos hipócritas, porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas y adornáis los monumentos de los justos,
30 and you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets' blood.'	30 y decís: “Si nosotros hubiéramos vivido en el tiempo de nuestros padres, no habríamos tenido parte con ellos en la sangre de los profetas!”
31 Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets;	31 Con lo cual atestiguáis contra vosotros mismos que sois hijos de los que mataron a los profetas.
32 now fill up what your ancestors measured out!	32 ¡Colmad también vosotros la medida de vuestros padres!
33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you flee from the judgment of Gehenna?	33 «¡Serpientes, raza de víboras! ¿Cómo vais a escapar a la condenación de la gehenna?
34 Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and pursue from town to town,	34 Por eso, he aquí que yo envío a vosotros profetas, sabios y escribas: a unos los mataréis y los crucificaréis, a otros los azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas y los perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad,
35 so that there may come upon you all the righteous blood shed upon earth, from the righteous blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.	35 para que caiga sobre vosotros toda la sangre inocente derramada sobre la tierra, desde la sangre del inocente Abel hasta la sangre de Zacarías, hijo de Baraquías, a quien matasteis entre el Santuario y el altar.
36 Amen, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.	36 Yo os aseguro: todo esto recaerá sobre esta generación.
37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were unwilling!	37 «¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, la que mata a los profetas y apedrea a los que le son enviados! ¡Cuántas veces he querido reunir a tus hijos, como una gallina reúne a sus pollos bajo las alas, y no habéis querido!
38 Behold, your house will be abandoned, desolate.	38 Pues bien, se os va a dejar desierta vuestra casa.
39 I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"	39 Porque os digo que ya no me volveréis a ver hasta que digáis: ¡Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor!»
