But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them.1 But the souls of the just are in the hand of God and no torment of death will touch them.
They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction2 In the eyes of the foolish, they seemed to die, and their departure was considered an affliction,
and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace.3 and their going away from us, a banishment. Yet they are in peace.
For if before men, indeed, they be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality;4 And though, in the sight of men, they suffered torments, their hope is full of immortality.
Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of himself.5 Troubled in few things, in many things they will be well compensated, because God has tested them and found them worthy of himself.
As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself.6 Like gold in the furnace, he has proved them, and as a holocaust victim, he has received them, and in the time of their visitation
In the time of their visitation they shall shine, and shall dart about as sparks through stubble;7 they will shine, and they will dash about like sparks among stubble.
They shall judge nations and rule over peoples, and the LORD shall be their King forever.8 They will judge the nations and they will rule over the people, and their Lord will reign forever.
Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love: Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with the elect.9 Those who trust in him, will understand the truth, and those who are faithful in love will rest in him, because grace and peace is for his elect.
But the wicked shall receive a punishment to match their thoughts, since they neglected justice and forsook the LORD.10 But the impious will be chastised according to their thoughts, for they have neglected the just and have retreated from the Lord.
For he who despises wisdom and instruction is doomed. Vain is their hope, fruitless are their labors, and worthless are their works.11 For whoever abandons wisdom and instruction is unhappy, and their hope is empty, and their labors without fruit, and their works useless.
Their wives are foolish and their children wicked; accursed is their brood.12 Their wives are foolish and their sons are wicked; the things that serve them are accursed.
Yes, blessed is she who, childless and undefiled, knew not transgression of the marriage bed; she shall bear fruit at the visitation of souls.13 Therefore, fertile is the barren and undefiled, who has not known transgressions in bed; she will bear fruit by caring for holy souls.
So also the eunuch whose hand wrought no misdeed, who held no wicked thoughts against the LORD- For he shall be given fidelity's choice reward and a more gratifying heritage in the LORD'S temple.14 And fertile is the celibate, who has not wrought iniquity with his hands, nor thought wickedness against God; for to him will be given a special gift of faith and a very welcome place in the temple of the Lord.
For the fruit of noble struggles is a glorious one; and unfailing is the root of understanding.15 For the fruit of good labors is glorious and the root of wisdom shall never perish.
But the children of adulterers will remain without issue, and the progeny of an unlawful bed will disappear.16 But the sons of adulterers will not reach completion, and the offspring of a sinful bed will be banished.
For should they attain long life, they will be held in no esteem, and dishonored will their old age be at last;17 And if they live long, they will be counted as nothing, and their last years of old-age will be without honor.
While should they die abruptly, they have no hope nor comfort in the day of scrutiny;18 And if they die quickly, they will have no hope, nor words of comfort on the day of reckoning.
for dire is the end of the wicked generation.19 For the iniquities of the people have a dreadful result.
