1 Be not emulous of evil men, and desire not to be with them;	1 Non portare invidia ai malvagi, e non bramare di star con essi:
2 For their hearts plot violence, and their lips speak of foul play.	2 Perocché la loro mente inedita rapine: e le loro labbra parlano di tradimenti.
3 By wisdom is a house built, by understanding is it made firm;	3 La casa si edificherà colla sapienza, e per la prudenza renderassi stabile.
4 And by knowledge are its rooms filled with every precious and pleasing possession.	4 Mediante la scienza saran ripiene le guardarobe di ogni specie di cose preziose, e più belle.
5 A wise man is more powerful than a strong man, and a man of knowledge than a man of might;	5 L'uomo saggio ha fortezza, e l'uomo, che ha scienza, è robusto, e vigoroso.
6 For it is by wise guidance that you wage your war, and the victory is due to a wealth of counselors.	6 Perocché col buon ordine si governa la guerra: e la salute si troverà, dove son molti consigli.
7 For a fool, to be silent is wisdom; not to open his mouth at the gate.	7 Ardua cosa per lo stolto è la sapienza: egli non aprirà sua bocca alla porta.
8 He who plots evil doing-- men call him an intriguer.	8 Chi pensa a mal fare, avrà il nome di stolto.
9 Beyond intrigue and folly and sin, it is arrogance that men find abominable.	9 Il pensier dello stolto è peccato: il detrattore poi è l'obbrobrio degli uomini.
10 If you remain indifferent in time of adversity, your strength will depart from you.	10 Se stancandoti tu perdi speranza nel dì dell'angustia, la tua fortezza si impiccolisce.
11 Rescue those who are being dragged to death, and from those tottering to execution withdraw not.	11 Cava di pericolo quelli, che sono condotti a morte: e non esser tardo a liberare quelli, che sono strascinati al supplizio.
12 If you say, "I know not this man!" does not he who tests hearts perceive it? He who guards your life knows it, and he will repay each one according to his deeds.	12 Se tu dirai: Non ho forze abbastanza; colui che vede i cuori, egli conosce, e nulla è ascoso al Salvatore dell'anima tua, il quale renderà all'uomo secondo le opere sue.
13 If you eat honey, my son, because it is good, if virgin honey is sweet to your taste;	13 Mangia, figliuol mio, il miele, per che è buono, e il favo sarà dolcissimo al tuo palato.
14 Such, you must know, is wisdom to your soul. If you find it, you will have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.	14 Tale sarà all'anima tua la dottrina della sapienza, e quando tu l'avrai trovata, avrai speranza negli ultimi giorni, e la tua speranza non verrà meno.
15 Lie not in wait against the home of the just man, ravage not his dwelling place;	15 Non tendere insidie al giusto, e non cercare l'empietà nella casa di lui, e non isturbare il suo riposo:
16 For the just man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble to ruin.	16 Perocché sette volte caderà il giusto, e risorgerà; ma gli empj precipitano nel male.
17 Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and when he stumbles, let not your heart exult,	17 Non ti rallegrare della caduta del tuo nemico, e il cuor tuo non trionfi di sua rovina,
18 Lest the LORD see it, be displeased with you, and withdraw his wrath from your enemy.	18 Affinchè il Signore, ohe ciò vede, non se n'offenda, ed egli ritirerà da lui il suo sdegno.
19 Be not provoked with evildoers, nor envious of the wicked;	19 Non contendere co' malvaggi, e non portar invidia agli empj:
20 For the evil man has no future, the lamp of the wicked will be put out.	20 Perocché i cattivi non hanno speranza in futuro, e la lucerna dell'empio si spegnerà.
21 My son, fear the LORD and the king; have nothing to do with those who rebel against them;	21 Figliuol mio, temi il Signore, ed il re, e non far lega co' detrattori;
22 For suddenly arises the destruction they send, and the ruin from either one, who can measure?	22 Perocché scoppierà repentinamente la loro perdizione, e chi sa quai supplizi l'uno, e l'altro farà soffrire?
23 These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.	23 Queste cose ancora sono pei sapienti: il fare accettazione di persone in giudizio, non è cosa buona.
24 He who says to the wicked man, "You are just"-- men will curse him, people will denounce him;	24 Quelli, che all'empio dicono: Tu se' giusto, saran maledetti dai popoli, e detestati dalle tribù.
25 But those who convict the evildoer will fare well, and on them will come the blessing of prosperity.	25 Quelli, che lo condannano saranno lodati, e sopra di essi verrà la benedizione.
26 He gives a kiss on the lips who makes an honest reply.	26 Colui che risponde secondo la verità, da un bacio sulla bocca.
27 Complete your outdoor tasks, and arrange your work in the field; afterward you can establish your house.	27 Metti in buon ordine fuori il tuo lavoro, e coltiva diligentemente il tuo campo, e poi fabbricherai la tua casa.
28 Be not a witness against your neighbor without just cause, thus committing folly with your lips.	28 Non volere senza motivo render testimonianza contro il tuo prossimo, e non adular nissuno colle tue labbra.
29 Say not, "As he did to me, so will I do to him; I will repay the man according to his deeds."	29 Non dire: Farò a lui quello, che ha fatto a me: renderò a ciascheduno secondo le sue azioni.
30 I passed by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man without sense;	30 Passai pel campo di un infingardo, e per la vigna di un uomo stolto,
31 And behold! it was all overgrown with thistles; its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall broken down.	31 E vidi, come tutto era pieno di ortica, e le spine l'avean coperta quant'ell è grande, e la muraglia a secco era rovinata.
32 And as I gazed at it, I reflected; I saw and learned the lesson:	32 Veduta tal cosa, la riposi nel mio cuore, e con tal esempio imparai a ben regolarmi.
33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest--	33 E dissi: Un poco tu dormirai, un altro poco ti appisolerai, un pochetto starai colle mani in mano per riposarti;
34 Then will poverty come upon you like a highwayman, and want like an armed man.	34 E ti sopravverrà, come un corriere, la indigenza, e la mendicità, come un uomo armato.
