Proverbs 24

1 Be not emulous of evil men, and desire not to be with them;	1 No tengas envidia de los malos, no desees estar con ellos,
2 For their hearts plot violence, and their lips speak of foul play.	2 porque su corazón trama violencias, y sus labios hablan de desgracias.
3 By wisdom is a house built, by understanding is it made firm;	3 Con la sabiduria se construye una casa, y con la prudencia se afianza;
4 And by knowledge are its rooms filled with every precious and pleasing possession.	4 con la ciencia se llenan los cilleros de todo bien precioso y deseable.
5 A wise man is more powerful than a strong man, and a man of knowledge than a man of might;	5 El varón sabio está fuerte, el hombre de ciencia fortalece su vigor;
6 For it is by wise guidance that you wage your war, and the victory is due to a wealth of counselors.	6 porque con sabios consejos harás la guerra, y en la abundancia de consejeros está el éxito.
7 For a fool, to be silent is wisdom; not to open his mouth at the gate.	7 Muy alta está la sabiduría para el necio: no abre su boca en la puerta.
8 He who plots evil doing-- men call him an intriguer.	8 Al que piensa en hacer mal, se le llama maestro en intrigas.
9 Beyond intrigue and folly and sin, it is arrogance that men find abominable.	9 La necedad sólo maquina pecados, el arrogante es abominable a los hombres.
10 If you remain indifferent in time of adversity, your strength will depart from you.	10 Si te dejas abatir el día de la angustia, angosta es tu fuerza.
11 Rescue those who are being dragged to death, and from those tottering to execution withdraw not.	11 Libra a los que son llevados a la muerte, y a los conducidos al suplicio ¡si los puedieras retener!
12 If you say, "I know not this man!" does not he who tests hearts perceive it? He who guards your life knows it, and he will repay each one according to his deeds.	12 Si dices: «Mira que no lo sabíamos», ¿acaso el que pesa los corazones no comprende? ¿el que vigila tu alma, no lo sabe? El da a cada hombre según sus obras.
13 If you eat honey, my son, because it is good, if virgin honey is sweet to your taste;	13 Come miel, hijo mío, porque es buena. Panal de miel es dulce a tu paladar.
14 Such, you must know, is wisdom to your soul. If you find it, you will have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.	14 Pues sábete que así será la sabiduría para tu alma, y si la hallas, hay un mañana, y tu esperanza no será aniquilada.
15 Lie not in wait against the home of the just man, ravage not his dwelling place;	15 No pongas, malvado, asechanzas en la mansión del justo, no hagas violencia a su morada.
16 For the just man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble to ruin.	16 Que siete veces cae el justo, pero se levanta, mientras los malos se hunden en la desgracia.
17 Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and when he stumbles, let not your heart exult,	17 No te alegres por la caída de tu enemigo, no se goce tu corazón cuando se hunde;
18 Lest the LORD see it, be displeased with you, and withdraw his wrath from your enemy.	18 no sea que lo vea Yahveh y le desagrade, y aparte de él su ira.
19 Be not provoked with evildoers, nor envious of the wicked;	19 No te enfurezcas por causa de los malvados, ni tengas envidia de los malos.
20 For the evil man has no future, the lamp of the wicked will be put out.	20 Porque para el malvado no hay un mañana: la lámpara de los malos se extinguirá.
21 My son, fear the LORD and the king; have nothing to do with those who rebel against them;	21 Teme, hijo mío, a Yahveh y al rey, no te relaciones con los innovadores,
22 For suddenly arises the destruction they send, and the ruin from either one, who can measure?	22 porque al instante surgirá su calamidad, y ¿quién sabe el castigo que pueden ambos dar?
23 These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.	23 También esto pertenece a los sabios: Hacer acepción de personas en el juicio no está bien.
24 He who says to the wicked man, "You are just"-- men will curse him, people will denounce him;	24 Al que dice al malo: «Eres justo», le maldicen los pueblos y le detestan las naciones;
25 But those who convict the evildoer will fare well, and on them will come the blessing of prosperity.	25 los que los castigan, viven felices, y viene sobre ellos la bendición del bien.
26 He gives a kiss on the lips who makes an honest reply.	26 Besa en los labios, el que responde con franqueza.
27 Complete your outdoor tasks, and arrange your work in the field; afterward you can establish your house.	27 Ordena tus trabajos de fuera y prepara tus faenas en el campo; y después puedes construirte tu casa.
28 Be not a witness against your neighbor without just cause, thus committing folly with your lips.	28 No des testimonio, en vano, contra tu prójimo, ni engañes con tus labios.
29 Say not, "As he did to me, so will I do to him; I will repay the man according to his deeds."	29 No digas: «Como él me ha hecho a mí, le haré yo a él, daré a cada uno según sus obras».
30 I passed by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man without sense;	30 He pasado junto al campo de un perezoso, y junto a la viña de un hombre insensato,
31 And behold! it was all overgrown with thistles; its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall broken down.	31 y estaba todo invadido de ortigas, los cardos cubrían el suelo, la cerca de piedras estaba derruída.
32 And as I gazed at it, I reflected; I saw and learned the lesson:	32 Al verlo, medité en mi corazón, al contemplarlo aprendí la lección:
33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest--	33 «Un poco dormir, otro poco dormitar, otro poco tumbarse con los brazos cruzados
34 Then will poverty come upon you like a highwayman, and want like an armed man.	34 y llegará, como vagabundo, tu miseria y como un mendigo tu pobreza».
