Proverbs 24

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Be not emulous of evil men, and desire not to be with them;	1 Ne porte pas envie aux méchants, ne souhaite pas leur compagnie,
2 For their hearts plot violence, and their lips speak of foul play.	2 car leur coeur ne songe qu'à la violence, leurs lèvres n'expriment que malheur.
3 By wisdom is a house built, by understanding is it made firm;	3 C'est par la sagesse qu'on bâtit une maison, par l'intelligence qu'on l'affermit;
4 And by knowledge are its rooms filled with every precious and pleasing possession.	4 par le savoir on emplit ses greniers de tous les biens précieux et désirables.
5 A wise man is more powerful than a strong man, and a man of knowledge than a man of might;	5 Un homme sage est plein de force, l'homme de science affermit sa vigueur;
6 For it is by wise guidance that you wage your war, and the victory is due to a wealth of counselors.	6 car c'est par des calculs que tu feras la guerre, et le succès tient au grand nombre des conseillers.
7 For a fool, to be silent is wisdom; not to open his mouth at the gate.	7 Pour le fou, la sagesse est une forteresse inaccessible: à la porte de la ville, il n'ouvre pas labouche.
8 He who plots evil doing-- men call him an intriguer.	8 Qui songe à mal faire, on l'appelle un maître en astuce.
9 Beyond intrigue and folly and sin, it is arrogance that men find abominable.	9 La folie ne rêve que péché, le railleur est honni des hommes.
10 If you remain indifferent in time of adversity, your strength will depart from you.	10 Si tu te laisses abattre au jour mauvais, ta vigueur est peu de chose.
11 Rescue those who are being dragged to death, and from those tottering to execution withdraw not.	11 Délivre ceux qu'on envoie à la mort, ceux qu'on traîne au supplice, puisses-tu les sauver!
12 If you say, "I know not this man!" does not he who tests hearts perceive it? He who guards your life knows it, and he will repay each one according to his deeds.	12 Diras-tu: "Voilà! nous ne savions pas?" Celui qui pèse les coeurs ne comprend-il pas? Alorsqu'il sait, lui qui a façonné ton âme; c'est lui qui rendra à l'homme selon son oeuvre.
13 If you eat honey, my son, because it is good, if virgin honey is sweet to your taste;	13 Mange du miel, mon fils, car c'est bon, un rayon de miel est doux à ton palais.
14 Such, you must know, is wisdom to your soul. If you find it, you will have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.	14 Ainsi sera, sache-le, la sagesse pour ton âme. Si tu la trouves, il y aura un avenir et tonespérance ne sera pas anéantie.
15 Lie not in wait against the home of the just man, ravage not his dwelling place;	15 Ne t'embusque pas, méchant, près de la demeure du juste, ne dévaste pas son habitation.
16 For the just man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble to ruin.	16 Car le juste tombe sept fois et se relève, mais les méchants trébuchent dans l'adversité.
17 Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and when he stumbles, let not your heart exult,	17 Si ton ennemi tombe, ne te réjouis pas, que ton coeur n'exulte pas de ce qu'il trébuche,
18 Lest the LORD see it, be displeased with you, and withdraw his wrath from your enemy.	18 de peur que, voyant cela, Yahvé ne soit mécontent et qu'il ne détourne de lui sa colère.
19 Be not provoked with evildoers, nor envious of the wicked;	19 Ne t'échauffe pas au sujet des méchants, ne jalouse pas les impies.
20 For the evil man has no future, the lamp of the wicked will be put out.	20 Car pour le méchant, il n'est pas d'avenir: la lampe des impies s'éteint.
21 My son, fear the LORD and the king; have nothing to do with those who rebel against them;	21 Crains Yahvé, mon fils, et le roi; ne te lie pas avec les novateurs:
22 For suddenly arises the destruction they send, and the ruin from either one, who can measure?	22 car tout soudain surgira leur malheur, et la ruine de l'un et de l'autre, qui la connaît?
23 These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.	23 Ceci est encore des sages: avoir égard aux personnes dans les jugements n'est pas bien.
24 He who says to the wicked man, "You are just"-- men will curse him, people will denounce him;	24 Quiconque dit au méchant: "Tu es juste", les peuples le maudissent, les nations le honnissent;
25 But those who convict the evildoer will fare well, and on them will come the blessing of prosperity.	25 mais ceux qui punissent s'en trouvent bien, sur eux viendra une heureuse bénédiction.
26 He gives a kiss on the lips who makes an honest reply.	26 Il met un baiser sur les lèvres, celui qui répond franchement.
27 Complete your outdoor tasks, and arrange your work in the field; afterward you can establish your house.	27 Organise au-dehors ta besogne et prépare-la aux champs; ensuite, tu bâtiras ta maison.
28 Be not a witness against your neighbor without just cause, thus committing folly with your lips.	28 Ne témoigne pas à la légère contre ton prochain, ne trompe pas par tes lèvres.
29 Say not, "As he did to me, so will I do to him; I will repay the man according to his deeds."	29 Ne dis pas: "Comme il m'a fait, je lui ferai! à chacun je rendrai selon son oeuvre!"
30 I passed by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man without sense;	30 Près du champ du paresseux j'ai passé, près de la vigne de l'homme court de sens.
31 And behold! it was all overgrown with thistles; its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall broken down.	31 Or voici: tout était monté en orties, le chardon en couvrait la surface, le mur de pierres étaitécroulé.
32 And as I gazed at it, I reflected; I saw and learned the lesson:	32 Ayant vu, je réfléchis, ayant regardé, je tirai cette leçon:
33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest--	33 "Un peu dormir, un peu s'assoupir, un peu croiser les bras en s'allongeant,
34 Then will poverty come upon you like a highwayman, and want like an armed man.	34 et, tel un rôdeur, viendra l'indigence et la disette, comme un mendiant!"
