Proverbs 24

1 Be not emulous of evil men, and desire not to be with them;	1 N’envie pas les méchants, ne recherche pas leur compagnie,
2 For their hearts plot violence, and their lips speak of foul play.	2 car ils ne pensent qu’à la violence et ne parlent que de méfaits.
3 By wisdom is a house built, by understanding is it made firm;	3 C’est par la sagesse qu’on bâtit la maison, par l’expérience qu’on la consolide;
4 And by knowledge are its rooms filled with every precious and pleasing possession.	4 c’est grâce au savoir que ses chambres se remplissent de bien des choses précieuses et agréables.
5 A wise man is more powerful than a strong man, and a man of knowledge than a man of might;	5 Le sage l’emporte sur le fort, l’homme d’expérience vaut plus que le fort à bras;
6 For it is by wise guidance that you wage your war, and the victory is due to a wealth of counselors.	6 calcule bien lorsque tu fais la guerre, car la victoire vient là où beaucoup ont su penser.
7 For a fool, to be silent is wisdom; not to open his mouth at the gate.	7 La sagesse n’est pas à la portée du sot: qu’il se taise dans l’assemblée!
8 He who plots evil doing-- men call him an intriguer.	8 Celui qui médite le mal, on l’appelle un faiseur d’intrigues;
9 Beyond intrigue and folly and sin, it is arrogance that men find abominable.	9 le sot, pour sa part, s’emploie à commettre le péché, et le railleur à se faire détester de tous.
10 If you remain indifferent in time of adversity, your strength will depart from you.	10 Si tu perds courage au jour de la détresse, ta force n’était pas grand’chose.
11 Rescue those who are being dragged to death, and from those tottering to execution withdraw not.	11 Délivre ceux qu’on envoie à la mort, sauve ceux qu’on traîne au supplice!
12 If you say, "I know not this man!" does not he who tests hearts perceive it? He who guards your life knows it, and he will repay each one according to his deeds.	12 Après tu diras: “Nous ne le savions pas!” Mais celui qui pèse les cœurs voit clair, celui qui t’observe le saura bien; et il rendra à chacun selon ses œuvres.
13 If you eat honey, my son, because it is good, if virgin honey is sweet to your taste;	13 Mange du miel, mon fils, puisque c’est bon; le miel est doux au palais.
14 Such, you must know, is wisdom to your soul. If you find it, you will have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.	14 La sagesse de même te sera bonne: si tu l’acquiers, tu en verras les fruits, ton espérance ne sera pas déçue.
15 Lie not in wait against the home of the just man, ravage not his dwelling place;	15 Arrête, méchant, de comploter contre la maison du juste, ne va pas troubler son repos!
16 For the just man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble to ruin.	16 Si le juste tombait sept fois, il se relèverait encore, tandis que les méchants tomberont pour rester dans le malheur.
17 Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and when he stumbles, let not your heart exult,	17 Ne te réjouis pas si ton ennemi tombe, n’aie pas le cœur en fête parce qu’il a trébuché;
18 Lest the LORD see it, be displeased with you, and withdraw his wrath from your enemy.	18 Yahvé pourrait en avoir du déplaisir, et il détournerait sur toi sa colère.
19 Be not provoked with evildoers, nor envious of the wicked;	19 Ne t’excite pas au sujet de ceux qui font le mal, n’envie pas les impies;
20 For the evil man has no future, the lamp of the wicked will be put out.	20 car le mal n’a pas d’avenir, et la lampe des impies s’éteindra.
21 My son, fear the LORD and the king; have nothing to do with those who rebel against them;	21 Mon fils, crains Yahvé et le roi, ne fréquente pas les révoltés!
22 For suddenly arises the destruction they send, and the ruin from either one, who can measure?	22 Car tous deux peuvent frapper à l’improviste, et qui sait comment ils punissent.
23 These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.	23 Ceci encore vient des Sages. Il n’est pas bien d’être partial dans les jugements.
24 He who says to the wicked man, "You are just"-- men will curse him, people will denounce him;	24 Celui qui dit à un méchant: “Tu as raison!”, le peuple le maudit, les nations le détestent.
25 But those who convict the evildoer will fare well, and on them will come the blessing of prosperity.	25 Mais ceux qui savent punir s’en trouveront bien, ils seront comblés de bénédictions.
26 He gives a kiss on the lips who makes an honest reply.	26 Une réponse juste vaut tous les signes d’affection.
27 Complete your outdoor tasks, and arrange your work in the field; afterward you can establish your house.	27 Commence par ton travail au-dehors, occupe-toi d’abord de tes champs; après cela tu pourras agrandir ta maison.
28 Be not a witness against your neighbor without just cause, thus committing folly with your lips.	28 Ne témoigne pas à la légère contre ton prochain, voudrais-tu donc mentir?
29 Say not, "As he did to me, so will I do to him; I will repay the man according to his deeds."	29 Ne dis pas: “Je lui ferai comme il m’a fait!”
30 I passed by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man without sense;	30 Je suis passé près du champ du paresseux, j’ai longé la vigne d’un étourdi:
31 And behold! it was all overgrown with thistles; its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall broken down.	31 partout des orties, le sol était couvert de ronces, le mur de pierres s’était écroulé!
32 And as I gazed at it, I reflected; I saw and learned the lesson:	32 Après avoir vu, j’ai réfléchi et tiré la leçon:
33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest--	33 “On fait une petite sieste, on s’allonge un instant pour croiser les bras;
34 Then will poverty come upon you like a highwayman, and want like an armed man.	34 mais la pauvreté s’approche de toi comme un rôdeur, la misère fond sur toi comme un homme armé!
