Proverbs 24

1 Be not emulous of evil men, and desire not to be with them;	1 Non invidiare le persone malvagie, non desiderare di stare con loro,
2 For their hearts plot violence, and their lips speak of foul play.	2 poiché il loro cuore trama rovine e le loro labbra non esprimono che malanni.
3 By wisdom is a house built, by understanding is it made firm;	3 Con la sapienza si costruisce una casa e con la prudenza la si rende salda;
4 And by knowledge are its rooms filled with every precious and pleasing possession.	4 con la scienza si riempiono le sue stanze di tutti i beni preziosi e deliziosi.
5 A wise man is more powerful than a strong man, and a man of knowledge than a man of might;	5 Il saggio cresce in potenza e chi è esperto aumenta di forza.
6 For it is by wise guidance that you wage your war, and the victory is due to a wealth of counselors.	6 Perché con le strategie si fa la guerra e la vittoria dipende dal numero dei consiglieri.
7 For a fool, to be silent is wisdom; not to open his mouth at the gate.	7 È troppo alta la sapienza per lo stolto, alla porta della città egli non potrà aprire bocca.
8 He who plots evil doing-- men call him an intriguer.	8 Chi trama per fare il male si chiama mestatore.
9 Beyond intrigue and folly and sin, it is arrogance that men find abominable.	9 Il proposito dello stolto è il peccato e lo spavaldo è aborrito da tutti.
10 If you remain indifferent in time of adversity, your strength will depart from you.	10 Se te ne stai indolente nel giorno della sventura, ben poca è la tua forza.
11 Rescue those who are being dragged to death, and from those tottering to execution withdraw not.	11 Libera quelli che sono condotti alla morte e salva quelli che sono trascinati al supplizio.
12 If you say, "I know not this man!" does not he who tests hearts perceive it? He who guards your life knows it, and he will repay each one according to his deeds.	12 Se tu dicessi: «Io non lo sapevo», credi che non l’intenda colui che pesa i cuori? Colui che veglia sulla tua vita lo sa; egli renderà a ciascuno secondo le sue opere.
13 If you eat honey, my son, because it is good, if virgin honey is sweet to your taste;	13 Mangia il miele, figlio mio, perché è buono e il favo è dolce al tuo palato.
14 Such, you must know, is wisdom to your soul. If you find it, you will have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.	14 Sappi che tale è la sapienza per te; se la trovi, avrai un avvenire e la tua speranza non sarà stroncata.
15 Lie not in wait against the home of the just man, ravage not his dwelling place;	15 Non insidiare, come un malvagio, la dimora del giusto, non distruggere la sua abitazione,
16 For the just man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble to ruin.	16 perché se il giusto cade sette volte, egli si rialza, ma i malvagi soccombono nella sventura.
17 Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and when he stumbles, let not your heart exult,	17 Non ti rallegrare per la caduta del tuo nemico e non gioisca il tuo cuore, quando egli soccombe,
18 Lest the LORD see it, be displeased with you, and withdraw his wrath from your enemy.	18 perché il Signore non veda e se ne dispiaccia e allontani da lui la sua collera.
19 Be not provoked with evildoers, nor envious of the wicked;	19 Non irritarti per i malfattori e non invidiare i malvagi,
20 For the evil man has no future, the lamp of the wicked will be put out.	20 perché non ci sarà avvenire per il cattivo e la lampada dei malvagi si spegnerà.
21 My son, fear the LORD and the king; have nothing to do with those who rebel against them;	21 Figlio mio, temi il Signore e il re, e con i ribelli non immischiarti,
22 For suddenly arises the destruction they send, and the ruin from either one, who can measure?	22 perché improvviso sorgerà il loro castigo e la rovina mandata da entrambi chi la conosce?
23 These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.	23 Anche queste sono parole dei saggi. Avere preferenze personali in giudizio non è bene.
24 He who says to the wicked man, "You are just"-- men will curse him, people will denounce him;	24 Chi dice al malvagio: «Tu sei innocente», i popoli lo malediranno, le genti lo detesteranno;
25 But those who convict the evildoer will fare well, and on them will come the blessing of prosperity.	25 a chi invece lo punisce tutto andrà bene, su di lui si riverserà la benedizione.
26 He gives a kiss on the lips who makes an honest reply.	26 Dà un bacio sulle labbra chi risponde con parole giuste.
27 Complete your outdoor tasks, and arrange your work in the field; afterward you can establish your house.	27 Cura prima il tuo lavoro di fuori e prepàratelo nel tuo campo, e poi costruisciti la casa.
28 Be not a witness against your neighbor without just cause, thus committing folly with your lips.	28 Non testimoniare senza motivo contro il tuo prossimo, non ingannare con le labbra.
29 Say not, "As he did to me, so will I do to him; I will repay the man according to his deeds."	29 Non dire: «Come ha fatto a me così io farò a lui, renderò a ciascuno come si merita».
30 I passed by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man without sense;	30 Sono passato vicino al campo di un pigro, alla vigna di un uomo insensato:
31 And behold! it was all overgrown with thistles; its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall broken down.	31 ecco, ovunque erano cresciute le erbacce, il terreno era coperto di cardi e il recinto di pietre era in rovina.
32 And as I gazed at it, I reflected; I saw and learned the lesson:	32 Ho osservato e ho riflettuto, ho visto e ho tratto questa lezione:
33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest--	33 un po’ dormi, un po’ sonnecchi, un po’ incroci le braccia per riposare,
34 Then will poverty come upon you like a highwayman, and want like an armed man.	34 e intanto arriva a te la povertà, come un vagabondo, e l’indigenza, come se tu fossi un accattone.
