Proverbs 24

1 Be not emulous of evil men, and desire not to be with them;	1 Non invidiare gli uomini malvagi, non desiderare di stare con loro;
2 For their hearts plot violence, and their lips speak of foul play.	2 poiché il loro cuore trama rovine e le loro labbra non esprimono che malanni.
3 By wisdom is a house built, by understanding is it made firm;	3 Con la sapienza si costruisce la casa e con la prudenza la si rende salda;
4 And by knowledge are its rooms filled with every precious and pleasing possession.	4 con la scienza si riempiono le sue stanze di tutti i beni preziosi e deliziosi.
5 A wise man is more powerful than a strong man, and a man of knowledge than a man of might;	5 Un uomo saggio vale più di uno forte, un uomo sapiente più di uno pieno di vigore,
6 For it is by wise guidance that you wage your war, and the victory is due to a wealth of counselors.	6 perché con le decisioni prudenti si fa la guerra e la vittoria sta nel numero dei consiglieri.
7 For a fool, to be silent is wisdom; not to open his mouth at the gate.	7 È troppo alta la sapienza per lo stolto, alla porta della città egli non potrà aprir bocca.
8 He who plots evil doing-- men call him an intriguer.	8 Chi trama per fare il male si chiama mestatore.
9 Beyond intrigue and folly and sin, it is arrogance that men find abominable.	9 Il proposito dello stolto è il peccato e lo spavaldo è l'abominio degli uomini.
10 If you remain indifferent in time of adversity, your strength will depart from you.	10 Se ti avvilisci nel giorno della sventura, ben poca è la tua forza.
11 Rescue those who are being dragged to death, and from those tottering to execution withdraw not.	11 Libera quelli che sono condotti alla morte e salva quelli che sono trascinati al supplizio.
12 If you say, "I know not this man!" does not he who tests hearts perceive it? He who guards your life knows it, and he will repay each one according to his deeds.	12 Se dici: "Ecco, io non ne so nulla", forse colui che pesa i cuori non lo comprende? Colui che veglia sulla tua vita lo sa; egli renderà a ciascuno secondo le sue opere.
13 If you eat honey, my son, because it is good, if virgin honey is sweet to your taste;	13 Mangia, figlio mio, il miele, perché è buono e dolce sarà il favo al tuo palato.
14 Such, you must know, is wisdom to your soul. If you find it, you will have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.	14 Sappi che tale è la sapienza per te: se l'acquisti, avrai un avvenire e la tua speranza non sarà stroncata.
15 Lie not in wait against the home of the just man, ravage not his dwelling place;	15 Non insidiare, o malvagio, la dimora del giusto, non distruggere la sua abitazione,
16 For the just man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble to ruin.	16 perché se il giusto cade sette volte, egli si rialza, ma gli empi soccombono nella sventura.
17 Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and when he stumbles, let not your heart exult,	17 Non ti rallegrare per la caduta del tuo nemico e non gioisca il tuo cuore, quando egli soccombe,
18 Lest the LORD see it, be displeased with you, and withdraw his wrath from your enemy.	18 perché il Signore non veda e se ne dispiaccia e allontani da lui la collera.
19 Be not provoked with evildoers, nor envious of the wicked;	19 Non irritarti per i malvagi e non invidiare gli empi,
20 For the evil man has no future, the lamp of the wicked will be put out.	20 perché non ci sarà avvenire per il malvagio e la lucerna degli empi si estinguerà.
21 My son, fear the LORD and the king; have nothing to do with those who rebel against them;	21 Temi il Signore, figlio mio, e il re; non ribellarti né all'uno né all'altro,
22 For suddenly arises the destruction they send, and the ruin from either one, who can measure?	22 perché improvvisa sorgerà la loro vendetta e chi sa quale scempio faranno l'uno e l'altro?
23 These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.	23 Anche queste sono parole dei saggi. Aver preferenze personali in giudizio non è bene.
24 He who says to the wicked man, "You are just"-- men will curse him, people will denounce him;	24 Se uno dice all'empio: "Tu sei innocente", i popoli lo malediranno, le genti lo esecreranno,
25 But those who convict the evildoer will fare well, and on them will come the blessing of prosperity.	25 mentre tutto andrà bene a coloro che rendono giustizia, su di loro si riverserà la benedizione.
26 He gives a kiss on the lips who makes an honest reply.	26 Dà un bacio sulle labbra colui che risponde con parole rette.
27 Complete your outdoor tasks, and arrange your work in the field; afterward you can establish your house.	27 Sistema i tuoi affari di fuori e fatti i lavori dei campi e poi costruisciti la casa.
28 Be not a witness against your neighbor without just cause, thus committing folly with your lips.	28 Non testimoniare alla leggera contro il tuo prossimo e non ingannare con le labbra.
29 Say not, "As he did to me, so will I do to him; I will repay the man according to his deeds."	29 Non dire: "Come ha fatto a me così io farò a lui, renderò a ciascuno come si merita".
30 I passed by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man without sense;	30 Sono passato vicino al campo di un pigro, alla vigna di un uomo insensato:
31 And behold! it was all overgrown with thistles; its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall broken down.	31 ecco, ovunque erano cresciute le erbacce, il terreno era coperto di cardi e il recinto di pietre era in rovina.
32 And as I gazed at it, I reflected; I saw and learned the lesson:	32 Osservando, riflettevo e, vedendo, ho tratto questa lezione:
33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the arms to rest--	33 un po' dormire, un po' sonnecchiare, un po' incrociare le braccia per riposare
34 Then will poverty come upon you like a highwayman, and want like an armed man.	34 e intanto viene passeggiando la miseria e l'indigenza come un accattone.
