For the leader. Of David, the servant of the LORD, who sang to the LORD the words of this song after the LORD had rescued him from the clutches of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.1 Unto the end, for David the servant of the Lord, who spoke to the Lord the words of this canticle, in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hands of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. [2 Kings 22.]
He said: I love you, LORD, my strength,2 I will love thee, O Lord, my strength:
LORD, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, My God, my rock of refuge, my shield, my saving horn, my stronghold!3 The Lord is my firmament, my refuge, and my deliverer. My God is my helper, and in him will I put my trust. My protector and the horn of my salvation, and my support.
Praised be the LORD, I exclaim! I have been delivered from my enemies.4 Praising I will call upon the Lord: and I shall be saved from my enemies.
The breakers of death surged round about me; the menacing floods terrified me.5 The sorrows of death surrounded me: and the torrents of iniquity troubled me.
The cords of Sheol tightened; the snares of death lay in wait for me.6 The sorrows of hell encompassed me: and the snares of death prevented me.
In my distress I called out: LORD! I cried out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry to him reached his ears.7 In my affliction I called upon the Lord, and I cried to my God: And he heard my voice from his holy temple: and my cry before him came into his ears.
The earth rocked and shook; the foundations of the mountains trembled; they shook as his wrath flared up.8 The earth shook and trembled: the foundations of the mountains were troubled and were moved, because he was angry with them.
Smoke rose in his nostrils, a devouring fire poured from his mouth; it kindled coals into flame.9 There went up a smoke in his wrath: and a fire flamed from his face: coals were kindled by it.
He parted the heavens and came down, a dark cloud under his feet.10 He bowed the heavens, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.
Mounted on a cherub he flew, borne along on the wings of the wind.11 And he ascended upon the cherubim, and he flew; he flew upon the wings of the winds.
He made darkness the cover about him; his canopy, heavy thunderheads.12 And he made darkness his covert, his pavilion round about him: dark waters in the clouds of the air.
Before him scudded his clouds, hail and lightning too.13 At the brightness that was before him the clouds passed, hail and coals of fire.
The LORD thundered from heaven; the Most High made his voice resound.14 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and the highest gave his voice: hail and coals of fire.
He let fly his arrows and scattered them; shot his lightning bolts and dispersed them.15 And he sent forth his arrows, and he scattered them: he multiplied lightnings, and troubled them.
Then the bed of the sea appeared; the world's foundations lay bare, At the roar of the LORD, at the storming breath of his nostrils.16 Then the fountains of waters appeared, and the foundations of the world were discovered: At thy rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the spirit of thy wrath.
He reached down from on high and seized me; drew me out of the deep waters.17 He sent from on high, and took me: and received me out of many waters.
He rescued me from my mighty enemy, from foes too powerful for me.18 He delivered me from my strongest enemies, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.
They attacked me on a day of distress, but the LORD came to my support.19 They prevented me in the day of my affliction: and the Lord became my protector.
He set me free in the open; he rescued me because he loves me.20 And he brought me forth into a large place: he saved me, because he was well pleased with me.
The LORD acknowledged my righteousness, rewarded my clean hands.21 And the Lord will reward me according to my justice; and will repay me according to the cleanness of my hands:
For I kept the ways of the LORD; I was not disloyal to my God.22 Because I have kept the ways of the Lord; and have not done wickedly against my God.
His laws were all before me, his decrees I did not cast aside.23 For till his judgments are in my sight: and his justices I have not put away from me.
I was honest toward him; I was on guard against sin.24 And I shall be spotless with him: and shall keep myself from my iniquity.
So the LORD rewarded my righteousness, the cleanness of my hands in his sight.25 And the Lord will reward me according to my justice; and according to the cleanness of my hands before his eyes.
Toward the faithful you are faithful; to the honest you are honest;26 With the holy, thou wilt be holy; and with the innocent man thou wilt be innocent.
Toward the sincere, sincere; but to the perverse you are devious.27 And with the elect thou wilt be elect: and with the perverse thou wilt be perverted.
Humble people you save; haughty eyes you bring low.28 For thou wilt save the humble people; but wilt bring down the eyes of the proud.
You, LORD, give light to my lamp; my God brightens the darkness about me.29 For thou lightest my lamp, O Lord: O my God enlighten my darkness.
With you I can rush an armed band, with my God to help I can leap a wall.30 For by thee I shall be delivered from temptation; and through my God I shall go over a wall.
God's way is unerring; the LORD'S promise is tried and true; he is a shield for all who trust in him.31 As for my God, his way is undefiled: the words of the Lord are fire tried: he is the protector of all that trust in him.
Truly, who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is the rock?32 For who is God but the Lord? or who is God but our God?
This God who girded me with might, kept my way unerring,33 God who hath girt me with strength; and made my way blameless.
Who made my feet swift as a deer's, set me safe on the heights,34 Who hath made my feet like the feet of harts: and who setteth me upon high places.
Who trained my hands for war, my arms to bend even a bow of bronze.35 Who teacheth my hands to war: and thou hast made my arms like a brazen bow.
You have given me your protecting shield; your right hand has upheld me; you stooped to make me great.36 And thou hast given me the protection of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath held me up: And thy discipline hath corrected me unto the end: and thy discipline, the same shall teach me.
You gave me room to stride; my feet never stumbled.37 Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; and my feet are not weakened.
I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till I destroyed them.38 I will pursue after my enemies, and overtake them: and I will not turn again till they are consumed.
I struck them down; they could not rise; they fell dead at my feet.39 I will break them, and they shall not be able to stand: they shall fall under my feet.
You girded me with strength for war, subdued adversaries at my feet.40 And thou hast girded me with strength unto battle; and hast subdued under me them that rose up against me.
My foes you put to flight before me; those who hated me I destroyed.41 And thou hast made my enemies turn their back upon me, and hast destroyed them that hated me.
They cried for help, but no one saved them; cried to the LORD but got no answer.42 They cried, but there was none to save them, to the Lord: but he heard them not.
I ground them fine as dust in the wind; like mud in the streets I trampled them down.43 And I shall beat them as small as the dust before the wind; I shall bring them to nought, like the dirt in the streets.
You rescued me from the strife of peoples; you made me head over nations. A people I had not known became my slaves;44 Thou wilt deliver me from the contradictions of the people: thou wilt make me head of the Gentiles.
as soon as they heard of me they obeyed. Foreigners cringed before me;45 A people, which I knew not, hath served me: at the hearing of the ear they have obeyed me.
their courage failed; they came trembling from their fortresses.46 The children that are strangers have lied to me, strange children have faded away, and have halted from their paths.
The LORD lives! Blessed be my rock! Exalted be God, my savior!47 The Lord liveth, and blessed be my God, and let the God of my salvation be exalted :
O God who granted me vindication, made peoples subject to me,48 O God, who avengest me, and subduest the people under me, my deliverer from my enemies.
and preserved me from my enemies, Truly you have exalted me above my adversaries, from the violent you have rescued me.49 And thou wilt lift me up above them that rise up against me: from the unjust man thou wilt deliver me.
Thus I will proclaim you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name.50 Therefore will I give glory to thee, O Lord, among the nations, and I will sing a psalm to thy name.
You have given great victories to your king, and shown kindness to your anointed, to David and his posterity forever.51 Giving great deliverance to his king, and shewing mercy to David his anointed : and to his seed for ever.
