NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat mourning and weeping when we remembered Zion.1 Super flumina Babylonis,
illic sedimus et flevimus,
cum recordaremur Sion.
2 On the poplars of that land we hung up our harps.2 In salicibus in medio eius
suspendimus citharas nostras.
3 There our captors asked us for the words of a song; Our tormentors, for a joyful song: "Sing for us a song of Zion!"3 Quia illic rogaverunt nos,
qui captivos duxerunt nos,
verba cantionum,
et, qui affligebant nos, laetitiam:
“ Cantate nobis de canticis Sion ”.
4 But how could we sing a song of the LORD in a foreign land?4 Quomodo cantabimus canticum Domini
in terra aliena?
5 If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand wither.5 Si oblitus fuero tui, Ierusalem,
oblivioni detur dextera mea;
6 May my tongue stick to my palate if I do not remember you, If I do not exalt Jerusalem beyond all my delights.6 adhaereat lingua mea faucibus meis,
si non meminero tui,
si non praeposuero Ierusalem
in capite laetitiae meae.
7 Remember, LORD, against Edom that day at Jerusalem. They said: "Level it, level it down to its foundations!"7 Memor esto, Domine, adversus filios Edom
diei Ierusalem;
qui dicebant: “ Exinanite, exinanite
usque ad fundamentum in ea ”.
8 Fair Babylon, you destroyer, happy those who pay you back the evil you have done us!8 Filia Babylonis devastans,
beatus, qui retribuet tibi retributionem tuam,
quam retribuisti nobis;
9 Happy those who seize your children and smash them against a rock.9 beatus, qui tenebit
et allidet parvulos tuos ad petram.
