1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite spoke and said:	1 Elifaz di Teman prese a dire:
2 Should a wise man answer with airy opinions, or puff himself up with wind?	2 «Potrebbe il saggio rispondere con ragioni campate in aria e riempirsi il ventre del vento d’oriente?
3 Should he argue in speech which does not avail, and in words which are to no profit?	3 Si difende egli con parole inutili e con discorsi inconcludenti?
4 You in fact do away with piety, and you lessen devotion toward God,	4 Ma tu distruggi la religione e abolisci la preghiera innanzi a Dio.
5 Because your wickedness instructs your mouth, and you choose to speak like the crafty.	5 Infatti la tua malizia istruisce la tua bocca e scegli il linguaggio degli astuti.
6 Your own mouth condemns you, not I; you own lips refute you.	6 Non io, ma la tua bocca ti condanna e le tue labbra attestano contro di te.
7 Are you indeed the first-born of mankind, or were you brought forth before the hills?	7 Sei forse tu il primo uomo che è nato, o prima dei monti sei stato generato?
8 Are you privy to the counsels of God, and do you restrict wisdom to yourself?	8 Hai tu avuto accesso ai segreti consigli di Dio e ti sei appropriato tu solo della sapienza?
9 What do you know that we do not know? What intelligence have you which we have not?	9 Che cosa sai tu, che noi non sappiamo? Che cosa capisci, che non sia chiaro anche a noi?
10 There are gray-haired old men among us more advanced in years than your father.	10 Sia il vecchio che il canuto sono fra di noi, carichi di anni più di tuo padre.
11 Are the consolations of God not enough for you, and speech that deals gently with you?	11 Poca cosa sono per te le consolazioni di Dio e una parola moderata rivolta a te?
12 Why do your notions carry you away, and why do your eyes blink,	12 Perché il tuo cuore ti stravolge, perché ammiccano i tuoi occhi,
13 So that you turn your anger against God and let such words escape your mouth!	13 quando volgi contro Dio il tuo animo e fai uscire tali parole dalla tua bocca?
14 What is a man that he should be blameless, one born of woman that he should be righteous?	14 Che cos’è l’uomo perché si ritenga puro, perché si dica giusto un nato da donna?
15 If in his holy ones God places no confidence, and if the heavens are not clean in his sight,	15 Ecco, neppure nei suoi santi egli ha fiducia e i cieli non sono puri ai suoi occhi,
16 How much less so is the abominable, the corrupt: man, who drinks in iniquity like water!	16 tanto meno un essere abominevole e corrotto, l’uomo che beve l’iniquità come acqua.
17 I will show you, if you listen to me; what I have seen I will tell--	17 Voglio spiegartelo, ascoltami, ti racconterò quel che ho visto,
18 What wise men relate and have not contradicted since the days of their fathers,	18 quello che i saggi hanno riferito, che non hanno celato ad essi i loro padri;
19 To whom alone the land was given, when no foreigner moved among them.	19 solo a loro fu concessa questa terra, né straniero alcuno era passato in mezzo a loro.
20 The wicked man is in torment all his days, and limited years are in store for the tyrant;	20 Per tutti i giorni della vita il malvagio si tormenta; sono contati gli anni riservati al violento.
21 The sound of terrors is in his ears; when all is prosperous, the spoiler comes upon him.	21 Voci di spavento gli risuonano agli orecchi e in piena pace si vede assalito dal predone.
22 He despairs of escaping the darkness, and looks ever for the sword;	22 Non crede di potersi sottrarre alle tenebre, egli si sente destinato alla spada.
23 A wanderer, food for the vultures, he knows that his destruction is imminent.	23 Abbandonato in pasto ai falchi, sa che gli è preparata la rovina. Un giorno tenebroso
24 By day the darkness fills him with dread; distress and anguish overpower him.	24 lo spaventa, la miseria e l’angoscia l’assalgono come un re pronto all’attacco,
25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God and bade defiance to the Almighty,	25 perché ha steso contro Dio la sua mano, ha osato farsi forte contro l’Onnipotente;
26 One shall rush sternly upon him with the stout bosses of his shield, like a king prepared for the charge.	26 correva contro di lui a testa alta, al riparo del curvo spessore del suo scudo,
27 Because he has blinded himself with his crassness, padding his loins with fat,	27 poiché aveva la faccia coperta di grasso e pinguedine intorno ai suoi fianchi.
28 He shall dwell in ruinous cities, in houses that are deserted, That are crumbling into clay	28 Avrà dimora in città diroccate, in case dove non si abita più, destinate a diventare macerie.
29 with no shadow to lengthen over the ground. He shall not be rich, and his possessions shall not endure;	29 Non si arricchirà, non durerà la sua fortuna, le sue proprietà non si estenderanno sulla terra.
30 A flame shall wither him up in his early growth, and with the wind his blossoms shall disappear.	30 Alle tenebre non sfuggirà, il fuoco seccherà i suoi germogli e il vento porterà via i suoi fiori.
31 for vain shall be his bartering.	31 Non si affidi alla vanità che è fallace, perché vanità sarà la sua ricompensa.
32 His stalk shall wither before its time, and his branches shall be green no more.	32 Prima del tempo saranno disseccati, i suoi rami non rinverdiranno più.
33 He shall be like a vine that sheds its grapes unripened, and like an olive tree casting off its bloom.	33 Sarà spogliato come vigna della sua uva ancora acerba e getterà via come ulivo i suoi fiori,
34 For the breed of the impious shall be sterile, and fire shall consume the tents of extortioners.	34 poiché la stirpe dell’empio è sterile e il fuoco divora le tende dell’uomo venale.
35 They conceive malice and bring forth emptiness; they give birth to failure.	35 Concepisce malizia e genera sventura e nel suo seno alleva l’inganno».
