1 They therefore sent messengers to him to sue for peace in these words:	1 Man schickte Gesandte zu ihm mit folgender Friedensbotschaft:
2 "We, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar the great king, lie prostrate before you; do with us as you will.	2 "Siehe, wir liegen vor dir als Knechte des Großkönigs Nabuchodonosor, damit du uns behandelst, wie es dir gefällt!
3 Our dwellings and all our wheat fields, our flocks and herds, and all our encampments are at your disposal; make use of them as you please.	3 Unsere Gehöfte, alle unsere Ortschaften, alle Weizenfelder, alle Kleinvieh- und Rinderherden und alle unsere Zelthürden liegen vor dir! Verfüge, wie es dir beliebt!
4 Our cities and their inhabitants are also at your service; come and deal with them as you see fit."	4 Siehe, auch unsere Städte und ihre Bewohner sind deine Knechte. Komm und begegne ihnen, wie es deinen Augen richtig erscheint!"
5 After the spokesmen had reached Holofernes and given him this message,	5 Die Männer traten vor Holophernes und erstatteten ihm gemäß diesen Aufträgen Bericht.
6 he went down with his army to the seacoast, and stationed garrisons in the fortified cities; from them he impressed picked troops as auxiliaries.	6 Da stieg er mit seinem Heer zur Meeresküste hinab. Er legte Besatzungen in die befestigten Städte und hob aus ihnen erlesene Männer als Hilfstruppen aus.
7 The people of these cities and all the inhabitants of the countryside received him with garlands and dancing to the sound of timbrels.	7 Jene und ihre ganze Umgebung empfingen ihn mit Kränzen, Reigentänzen und Pauken.
8 Nevertheless, he devastated their whole territory and cut down their sacred groves, for he had been commissioned to destroy all the gods of the earth, so that every nation might worship Nebuchadnezzar alone, and every people and tribe invoke him as a god.	8 Aber er zerstörte ihre Heiligtümer und hieb ihre Haine um. Denn es war ihm Macht gegeben, alle Götter der Erde zu vernichten, damit alle Völker dem Nabuchodonosor allein religiöse Verehrung erweisen und alle Zungen und Stämme ihn als ihren Gott anrufen sollten.
9 At length Holofernes reached Esdraelon in the neighborhood of Dothan, the approach to the main ridge of the Judean mountains;	9 Da kam er in das Gebiet gegenüber Esdrelon in die Nähe von Dotaja, das vor dem großen Abhang von Judäa liegt.
10 he set up his camp between Geba and Scythopolis, and stayed there a whole month to refurbish all the equipment of his army.	10 Er schlug zwischen Gabaj und Skytopolis sein Lager auf; dort blieb er einen Monat, um seinen ganzen Heerestroß zu sammeln.
