BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Parabole di Salomone figliuolo di David, re d'Israele.	1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 Donde apparar la sapienza, e la disciplina,	2 for learning what wisdom and discipline are, for understanding words of deep meaning,
3 E intendere gli avvertimenti della prudenza, e abbracciare le istruzioni della dottrina, la giustizia, la rettitudine, e l'equità:	3 for acquiring a disciplined insight, uprightness, justice and fair dealing;
4 Donde i piccoli si provveggano di sagacità, i giovinetti di sapere, e di intelligenza.	4 for teaching sound judgement to the simple, and knowledge and reflection to the young;
5 Il saggio, che ascolterà, crescerà in sapienza, e colui, che intenderà, starà al timone:	5 Let the wise listen and learn yet more, and a person of discernment wil acquire the art of guidance.
6 Comprenderà le parabole, e la loro interpretazione, le parole de' saggi, e i loro enimmi.	6 for perceiving the meaning of proverbs and obscure sayings, the sayings of the sages and their riddles.
7 I timor del Signore egli o il principio della sapienza: la sapienza, e la dottrina è disprezzata dagli stolti.	7 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; fools spurn wisdom and discipline.
8 Ascolta, figliuol mio, i precetti del padre tuo, e non metter da banda le ammonizioni della tua madre:	8 Listen, my child, to your father's instruction, do not reject your mother's teaching:
9 Onde tu acquisti corona al tuo capo, e collana al tuo collo.	9 they wil be a crown of grace for your head, a circlet for your neck.
10 Figliuol mio, se i peccatori ti adescherrano, tu non fare a modo di coloro.	10 My child, if sinners try to seduce you, do not go with them.
11 S'ei diranno: Vieni con noi, insidieremo alla vita altrui, nasconderemo i lacci tesi a colui, che inutilmente è senza colpa:	11 If they say, 'Come with us: let us lie in ambush to shed blood; if we plan an ambush for the innocentwithout provocation,
12 Lo ingoieremo vivo, come fa l'inferno, e tutto intero, come un che cade in un baratro.	12 we can swal ow them alive, like Sheol, and whole, like those who sink into oblivion.
13 Troveremo ricchezze grandi d'ogni maniera, ed empieremo di spoglie le nostre case.	13 We shal find treasures of every sort, we shall fil our houses with plunder;
14 Unisci la sorte tua colla nostra, una sola borsa sarà tra tutti noi.	14 throw in your lot with us: one purse between us al .'
15 Figliuol mio, non andar con costoro: tien lungi dalle vie loro i tuoi passi.	15 My child, do not fol ow them in their way, keep your steps out of their path
16 Perocché i loro piedi corrono al male, ed ei si affrettano a spargere il sangue;	16 for their feet hasten to evil, they are quick to shed blood;
17 Ma indarno si tende la rete dinanzi agli occhi dei pennuti augelli:	17 for the net is spread in vain if any winged creature can see it.
18 Costoro di più le insidie tendono alla propria lor vita, e le frodi macchinano contro le anime loro.	18 It is for their own blood such people lie in wait, their ambush is against their own selves!
19 Cosi le ruberie di tutti gli avari ruban le anime di quelli, che se le appropiano.	19 Such are the paths of al who seek dishonest gain: which robs of their lives al who take it for their own.
20 La sapienza esce fuora cantando, alza la voce sua nelle piazze,	20 Wisdom cal s aloud in the streets, she raises her voice in the public squares;
21 Là, dove si aduna la moltitudine, ella si fa sentire, alle porte (della città) ella espone i suoi documenti, e dice:	21 she cal s out at the street corners, she delivers her message at the city gates.
22 Fino a quando, o fanciulli, amerete voi la fanciullaggine? e ameranno gli stolti quello, che ad essi nuoce? e gli imprudenti avranno in odio la scienza?	22 'You simple people, how much longer will you cling to your simple ways? How much longer willmockers revel in their mocking and fools go on hating knowledge?
23 Volgetevi a udire le mie riprensioni: ecco che io vi comunicherò il mio spirito, e voi farò nota la mia dottrina.	23 Pay attention to my warning. To you I wil pour out my heart and tel you what I have to say.
24 Perché io chiamai, e voi non obbediste, stesi la mano, e nissun vi fece attenzione,	24 Since I have cal ed and you have refused me, since I have beckoned and no one has taken notice,
25 Disprezzaste tutti i miei consigli, e poneste in non cale le mie riprensioni;	25 since you have ignored al my advice and rejected al my warnings,
26 Io pure nella perdizione vostra riderò, e vi schernirò allora quando sopravverrà a voi quello, che temevate.	26 I, for my part, shall laugh at your distress, I shal jeer when terror befal s you,
27 Quando improvvisa sciagura vi investirà, e la morte, quasi turbine, vi sorprenderà; quando sopra di voi si getterà la tribolazione, e l'affanno.	27 when terror befal s you, like a storm, when your distress arrives, like a whirlwind, when ordeal andanguish bear down on you.
28 Allora costoro mi invocheranno, ed io non gli esaudirò, si alzeranno, solleciti, e non mi troveranno:	28 Then they will cal me, but I shal not answer, they wil look eagerly for me and will not find me.
29 Perocché ebbero in odio la disciplina, e non abbracciarono il timor del Signore.	29 They have hated knowledge, they have not chosen the fear of Yahweh,
30 E non porser le orecchie aì miei consigli, e si fecer beffe di tutte le mie correzioni.	30 they have taken no notice of my advice, they have spurned al my warnings:
31 Mangeranno pertanto i frutti delle opere loro, e si satolleranno de' loro consiglj.	31 so they wil have to eat the fruits of their own ways of life, and choke themselves with their ownscheming.
32 La indocilità di questi fanciulli sarà la loro morte, e la prosperità degli stolti li manderà in rovina.	32 For the errors of the simple lead to their death, the complacency of fools works their own ruin;
33 Ma chi ascolta me avrà riposo senza paure, e sarà nell'abbondanza scevro dal timore de' mali.	33 but whoever listens to me may live secure, will have quiet, fearing no mischance.'
